  • This paper presents a feasibility study whether Shida's constitutive equation being widely used for plain carbon steel in steel manufacturing industry can be extended to alloy steels with a due carbon equivalent model. T,he constitutive relation of the alloy steels (SAE9254, AISI52100 and AISI4140) is measured using hot deformation simulator (GLEEBLE 3500C) at high temperatures ($800^{\circ}C{\~}1000^{\circ}C$) within strain rates of $0.05{\~}40\;s^{-1}$. It has been found the predicted flow stress behavior (constitutive relation) of AISI52100 steel is in agreement with the measured one. On the other hand, the measured flow stress behavior of SAE9254 and AISI4140 steel partly concords with the predicted one when material experiences relatively high strain rate ($10{\~}40\;s^{-1}$) deformation at low temperature ($800^{\circ}C$). It can be deduced that, for AISI52100 steel, Shida's equation with the carbon equivalent model can be applicable directly to the roughing and intermediate finishing stand in hot rolling process for calculating the roll force and torque.

  • MIG brazing is used for many parts without melting base metal because of high productivity. Pulsed MIG brazing can be used to further reduce heat input and to improve the process stability. However, a significant amount of zinc in galvanized sheet steel is burned off in the area of brazes. Therefore, the brazing method to reduce the heat input is needed. In the brazing for galvanized sheet steel, variable polarity AC pulse MIG arc brazing can be applied to more decrease the heat input by setting EN-ratio adequately. In this research, we studied for the variable polarity AC pulse MIG arc brazing to decrease the heat input by using ERCuSi-A wire. As the result of increasing EN-ratio, melting ratio of base metal and burning off of zinc were reduced in galvanized sheet steel.

  • This paper presents results of an experimental study to evaluate a new retrofit technique for strengthening shear deficient short concrete beams and columns. In this technique a mortar jacket reinforced with expanded steel meshes is used for retrofitting. Twelve short reinforced concrete specimens, including eight retrofitted ones, were tested. Six specimens were tested under a constant compressive axial force of 15% of column axial load capacity based on original concrete gross section, $A_g$, and the concrete compressive strength, ${f_c}^{\prime}$. Main variables were the spacing of ties in original specimens and the volume fraction of expanded metal in jackets. Original specimens failed before reaching their nominal calculated flexural strength, $M_n$, and had very poor ductility. Strengthened specimens reached their nominal flexural strength and had a ductility capacity factor of up to 8 for the beams and up to 5.5 for the columns. Based on the test results, it can be concluded that expanded steel meshes can be used effectively to strengthen shear deficient concrete members.

  • Cold rolled and high strength steel were used for vehicle bodys to satisfy environmental regulation and improve fuel ratio. This paper presented a method far determining the fatigue life of cold rolled steel sheet EZNCEN and high strength steel sheet HS40R spot weldment used in vehicles. We can estimate the fatigue life of the spot weldments from the MSC/FATIGUE using the finite element method. The maximum load is found in the nugget part of both surfaces. The cold rolled steel and the high strength steel showed the maximum stress 746MPa and 730MPa in the effective nugget part when the weld current was 8KA and 7KA, respectively. Also the some weld current of the cold rolled steel and high strength steel is applied, the fatigue life of high strength steel is obtained about four times longer than the cold rolled steel.

  • PURPOSES : This study aimed to analyze the experimental and numerical behavior of warm mix asphalt pavement prepared using steel slag and RAP and to conduct economic analysis of pavement construction. METHODS : For developing high performance asphalt pavement, we performed three evaluations: fundamental analysis, experimental testing, and 3D finite element analysis. In particular, 3D finite element analysis was conducted on several pavement structures by adopting the results of experimental tests. RESULTS : Through the various evaluations, it was established that steel slag was effective for use as asphalt mixture aggregate. Moreover, asphalt mixture constituting steel slag and RAP demonstrated higher performance behavior compared with conventionally used asphalt mixture. Furthermore, based on the 3D FE modeling, we established that the developed asphalt pavement constituting steel slag and RAP can be utilized for thin layer pavement with comparable performance behavior. CONCLUSIONS :Warm mix asphalt pavement prepared using steel slag and RAP is more competitive and economic compared to hot-mix asphalt pavement. Moreover, it can be applied for preparing thin layer asphalt pavements with reasonable performance. The developed warm mix asphalt pavement prepared using steel slag and RAP can be an alternative pavement type with competitive performance based on the reasonable economic benefit it provides.

  • In this paper, the hysteretic behaviors of channel and C-section cold-formed steel members (CFSMs) under cyclic axial loading were simulated with the finite element method. Geometric and material nonlinearities, Bauschinger effect, strain hardening and strength improvement at corner zones were taken into account. Extensive numerical results indicated that, as the width-to-thickness ratio increases, local buckling occurs prematurely. As a result, the hysteretic behavior of the CFSMs degrades and their energy dissipation capability decreases. Due to the presence of lips, the hysteretic behavior of a C-section steel member is superior to that of its corresponding channel section. The intermediate stiffeners in a C-section steel member postpone the occurrence of local buckling and change its shapes, which can greatly improve its hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation capability. Therefore, the CFSMs with a large width-to-thickness ratio can be improved by adding lips and intermediate stiffeners, and can be used more extensively in residential buildings located in seismic areas.

  • The nonlinear seismic responses of steel buildings with perimeter moment resisting frames (PMRF) and interior gravity frames (IGF) are estimated, modeling the interior connections first as perfectly pinned (PPC), and then as partially restrained (PRC). Two 3D steel building models, twenty strong motions and three levels of the PRC rigidity, which are represented by the Richard Model and the Beam Line Theory, are considered. The RUAUMOKO Computer Program is used for the required time history nonlinear dynamic analysis. The responses can be significantly reduced when interior connections are considered as PRC, confirming what observed in experimental investigations. The reduction significantly varies with the strong motion, story, model, structural deformation, response parameter, and location of the structural element. The reduction is larger for global than for local response parameters; average reductions larger than 30% are observed for shears and displacements while they are about 20% for bending moments. The reduction is much larger for medium- than for low-rise buildings indicating a considerable influence of the structural complexity. It can be concluded that, the effect of the dissipated energy at PRC should not be neglected. Even for connections with relative small stiffness, which are usually idealized as PPC, the reduction can be significant. Thus, PRC can be used at IGF of steel buildings with PMRF to get more economical construction, to reduce the seismic response and to make steel building more seismic load tolerant. Much more research is needed to consider other aspects of the problem to reach more general conclusions.

  • In plate forming technology, cylindrical drawing process is widely used in industry due to technological development. In this study, we used stainless steel 3042B and stainless steel 304J1, which are the most commonly used materials in the production of cold and hot water tanks for water purifiers, among cylindrical drawing products. Under the same conditions, the thickness of the sidewall of the product formed by drawn experiment was studied. As a result of the experiment, the bottom thickness of stainless steel 304J1 was considered to be thick. It is judged that the defect rate can be reduced by changing the breaking phenomenon of the floor surface of the cold and hot water bottles to the material of stainless steel 304j1. Stainless steel 304 2B material shows a sharp change in thickness from punch corner R to sidewall position, while stainless steel 304J1 material showed a uniform change from punch corner R to sidewall position. Stainless steel 304J1 material is considered to improve the clamping of the product in the process of extracting the product after hand drawing. The appearance of stainless steel 3042B products is considered to produce more wrinkles in the flange, which exerts greater tensile force on the sidewall during molding, resulting in uneven sidewall thickness.

  • Structural materials can experience large plastic deformation under extreme cyclic loading that is caused by events like earthquakes. To evaluate the seismic safety of a structure, accurate numerical material models should be used. For a steel structure, the cyclic strain hardening behavior of structural steel should be correctly modeled. In this study, a combined hardening model, consisting of one isotropic hardening model and three nonlinear kinematic hardening models, was used. To determine the values of the combined hardening model parameters efficiently and accurately, the improved opposition-based particle swarm optimization (iOPSO) model was adopted. Low-cycle fatigue tests were conducted for three steel grades commonly used in Korea and their modeling parameters were determined using iOPSO, which was first developed in Korea. To avoid expensive and complex low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests for determining the combined hardening model parameter values for structural steel, empirical equations were proposed for each of the combined hardening model parameters based on the LCF test data of 21 steel grades collected from this study. In these equations, only the properties obtained from the monotonic tensile tests are required as input variables.
