  • In the undercooled melt of $Pd_{40}Cu_{30}Ni_{10}P_{20}$ alloy, the solidification behavior including nucleation and growth of crystals at the micrometer level has been observed in-situ by use of a confocal scanning laser microscope combined with an infrared image furnace. The $Pd_{40}Cu_{30}Ni_{10}P_{20}$ alloy specimens were cooled from the liquid state to glass transition temperature. 575 K, at various cooling late under a helium gas flow. According to the cooling rate, the morphologies of the solidification front are changed among various types, irregular jog like front, columnar dendritic front, cellular grain, star like shape jog and fine grain, etc. The velocities of the solid-liquid interface are measured to be $10^{-5}{\sim}10^{-8}$ m/s which are at least two orders higher than the theoretical crystal growth rates. Combining the morphologies observed in terms of cooling rates and their solidification behaviors, we conclude that phase separation takes place in the undercooled molten $Pd_{40}Cu_{30}Ni_{10}P_{20}$ alloy. The continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram was constructed from solidification onset time at various linear cooling conditions with different rate. The CCT diagram suggests that the critical cooling rate for glassy solidification is about 1.5 K/s, which is in agreement with the previous calorimetric findings.

  • In this study, applicability of software used to analyze the lateral deformations and its shape of braced cuts, executed to excavate the ground for constructing the underground structures, was assessed by performing field measurements and numerical analyses and their behaviors were also compared with results of previous studies. Three typical sections, located at the construction site where the subway was on the process of construction at Suwon city in Gyeonggido, were chosen and the data of field measurement at those sections were collected. Numerical analyses with FEM technique of using the software PLAXIS and elasto-plastic approach of using the software MIDAS were performed. In general, the deformed shapes of braced cut, obtained from numerical approaches, were in relatively good agreements with results from field measurements. For sections of A-A and B-B, measured values were greater than analyzed ones whereas they were in relatively good agreements in the section C-C. As results of comparing the values from the measurements and the estimations, they were found to be close to each other so that numerical approaches were assessed to be appropriate to estimate the lateral deformation. The numerical technique with FEM was preferred to use because it estimated closer to the measurements than the elasto-plastic approach.

  • Objectives: This study examined the reproductive health status and the work-related factors of female hairdressers. Methods: This study conducted by structured questionnaire from April 21th to May 20th. The study population of 316 were female hairdressers aged 15 to 60 years in Seoul. This study analysed the influencing factors, health related factors and work related factors on reproductive health using chi-square and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: 1. The 81.7% of the subjects aged under 29 years have unhealthy behaviors. The 47% of hairdressers experienced smoking. Among the total, 37% of them answered they are smoking at present. Those results reveal their working conditions were very stressful to cope as young females. 2. The use of hair dyes(OR=2.89, 95%CI:1.17-7.12), counteractive solutions(OR=3.20, 95%CI:1.04-9.83) and not wearing protective gloves(OR=2.81, 95%CI:1.11-7.12) are significantly associated with menstrual pains. 3. The hairdressers not using perm liquids were three times as likely to report regular menstruation compared with the hairdressers using perm liquids. Wearing protective gloves also was associated with regular menstruation. Conclusion: This study revealed various risky working conditions of hairdressers was associated with their reproductive health. This study suggests that we should pay more attention to the protective working conditions for reproductive health. More comprehensive health management program including reproductive health for female hairdressers is required as well.

  • The wide use of metal dusts have been found in industrial field and many dust explosion accidents occur by fire spread of dust layer. In this study, we developed a new experimental device to examine fire and explosion characteristics of the dust layer. Aspects of the burning zone over metals(Mg, Zr, Ta, Ti, etc) and PMMA(Polymethyl methacrylate) dust layers have been investigated experimentally to clarify behaviors (Spread rate and quenching distance) and effects of $N_2$ surrounding gas on the fire spread over metal dust layers. From the experimental result, it was found that the spread rate of metal dusts is larger than PMMA, the dependability of spread rate over the thickness of dust layer is small, and the minimum oxygen concentration of spread flame over Mg dust layer is 3.6-3.7 vol%. Since high correlation between the spread rate and the reciprocal of quenching distance was seen, relative risk prediction in those inflammable parameters can be predicted.

  • With increasing of communication technology in cyber-space, the space of consumer complain behavior moved from off-line to on-line, so called anti-site. No researches, however, really have done how the anti-sites worked for promoting consumer rights through consumer complain behaviors in cyber space. The purpose of this research was to give some suggestions for activating anti-site for promoting consumer rights. For this purpose, questionnaire on-line survey was conducted from April, 12 to 24, 2004. And 143 samples, who were visiting anti-site during survey period, were selected. Main findings were as following: First, visitors had rather positive confidence with informations in anti-sites. Second, visitors thought that anti-sites were working rather well in implementing consumer movement by sharing their experiences, and by supporting complaining space in cyber. Visitors, however, thought that anti-sites were not working well as a space for companies, not by giving their attentions on consumers' complains. Third, the satisfaction level of visitors was found to be rather high in terms of informations in anti-sites, and to be rather low in terms of companies' attentions on anti-sites and management of anti-sites. Based on results, some suggestions of activating anti-site for promoting consumer rights were as following: First, visitors should not only get information, but support new and useful informations for others. And also it was suggested that visitors should join consumer movement through anti-site actively. Second, companies should pay attentions on anti-sites for their sake because anti-sites could give very useful information improving customer satisfaction, and finally reducing cost and increasing profit.

  • Current virtual game interfaces cannot comprehend our metaphor, cannot reflect on our natural behavior aspect, cannot make us immerse into a game, and makes a barrier between virtual game space and our real behavior. It is very meaningful issue to use real objects tightly related to human-being's behaviors or reactions for interacting with game applications. Interactive Augmented Reality interfaces may augment users' perception of the real world by adding virtual information to it. We attempted an experiment on camera-based non-marker interface for online TCG application. This experiment uses real TCG cards which are recognized by our two phases Image KeyPoint Extraction/Matching Algorithm. These initiative experiments not only enlarge immersion and reality to the game, but also make real and virtual world seamless.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to develop a valid social contact survey instrument and to verify its feasibility for use among Korean adults. Methods: The Delphi technique was used to develop an instrument to assess social contacts, which was then applied in a cross-sectional pilot study. A panel of 15 medical professionals reviewed the feasibility and validity of each item. The minimum content validity ratio was 0.49. Thirty participants used the developed measure to record contacts during a 24-hour period. Results: After a systematic review, the survey instrument (parts I and II) was developed. Part I assessed social contact patterns over a 24-hour period, and part II assessed perceptions of contacts in daily life and preventive behaviors (hand hygiene and coughing etiquette). High validity and feasibility were found. In the pilot study, the 30 participants had a combined total of 198 contacts (mean, 6.6 daily contacts per person). The participants' age (p=0.012), occupation (p<0.001), household size (p<0.001), education (p<0.001), personal income (p=0.003), and household income (p<0.001) were significantly associated with the number of contacts. Contacts at home, of long duration, and of daily frequency were relatively likely to be physical. Assortative mixing was observed between individuals in their 20s and 50s. Contact type differed by location, duration, and frequency (p<0.001). Conclusions: The developed social contact survey instrument demonstrated high validity and feasibility, suggesting that it is viable for implementation.

  • The use of geotextile as reinforcing materials in soil structures has become widespread throughout the world. Geotextile reinforcement has been used in retaining walls, roadbed, embankment stabilization and especially reinforcement of soft foundation, and so on, In the past, however, its design and construction have been performed empirically. In this study, laboratory model tests were carried out in order to investigate the effects of geotextile rein- forcement on vertical and horizontal displacement and other characteristics in soft founda- tions. The experiments were executed in eight treatments ;no geotextile between embank - ment and subsoils, and seven geotextiles with different tensile strength. And such factors as the loading conditions, the tensile strength of geotextiles, the ingredient of geotextiles and the elapsed time were investigate in this study. And the analytical method were executed in order to study the stress and behavior of geotextile - reinforced soil structure by the nonlinear elasto - plastic finite element model. The following conclusions were drawn from this study. 1. Geotextile reinforcement reduced the effects of banking loads on subsoils more effectively with the increase of their tensile strength. 2. As the tensile strength of geotextiles was increase, the rate of the initial vertical disp - lacements of loading plate was reduced inverse proportional to loads, Rowever, the effect of loading was reduced when the loads exceed a certain limits, 3. The effect of reinforcement of nonwoven geotextile was 1.5-4.5 times larger than that of the woven geotextile with equivalent tensile strength. 4. The increased bearing capacity and the reduced settlement are proportioned as the tensile strength of geotextile. 5. The settlement at the long time loading were developed almost all, were completed after 10 days and the additional settlement were not developed since then. 6. The nonlinear elasto - plastic finite element method are accurate to predict the stresses and behayior of geotextile - reinforced soil structures.

  • In this work, a novel simple first-order shear deformation plate theory based on neutral surface position is developed for bending and free vibration analysis of functionally graded plates and supported by either Winkler or Pasternak elastic foundations. By dividing the transverse displacement into bending and shear parts, the number of unknowns and governing equations of the present theory is reduced, and hence, makes it simple to use. The governing equations are derived by employing the Hamilton's principle and the physical neutral surface concept. There is no stretching-bending coupling effect in the neutral surface-based formulation, and consequently, the governing equations and boundary conditions of functionally graded plates based on neutral surface have the simple forms as those of isotropic plates. Numerical results of present theory are compared with results of the traditional first-order and the other higher-order theories reported in the literature. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the static bending and free vibration behaviors of functionally graded plates.

  • Copolymers composed of hyaluronic acid (HA) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) were prepared to create temperature-sensitive injectable gels for use in controlled drug delivery applications. Semi-telechelic PNIPAAm, with amino groups at the end of each main chain, was synthesized by radical polymerization using 2-aminoethanethiol hydrochloride (AESH) as the chain transfer agent, and was then grafted onto the carboxyl groups of HA using carbodiimide chemistry. The result of the thermo-optical analysis revealed that the phase transition of the PNIPAAm-grafted HA solution occurred at around 30$\∼$33$^{circ}C$. As the graft yield of PNIPAAm onto the HA backbone increased, the HA-g-PNIPAAm copolymer solution exhibited sharper phase transition. The short chain PNIPAAm-grafted HA ($M_{w}$=6,100) showed a narrower temperature range for optical turbidity changes than the long chain PNIPAAm-grafted HA ($M_{w}$=13,100). PNIPAAm-grafted HA exhibited an increase in viscosity above 35$^{circ}C$, thus allowing the gels to maintain their shape for 24 h after in vivo administration. From the in vitro riboflavin release study, the HA-g-PNIPAAm gel showed a more sustained release behavior when the grafting yield of PNIPAAm onto the HA backbone was increased. In addition, BSA released from the PNIPAAm-g-HA gels showed a maximum concentration in the blood 12 h after being injected into the dorsal surface of a rabbit, followed by a sustained release profile after 60 h.
