Ten-year AVHRR sea surface temperature data obtained in the Yellow Sea are put into EOF analyses. Temperature variation is predominated by the first mode which is associated with the seasonal fluctuation of temperature with annual range decreasing with the bottom depth. Since such a strong annual signal may mask the upwind or downwind flows occurring intermittently during the winter, only the data obtained during this season are put into EOF analyses. Every winter shows similar results. The first mode, explaining more than 90% of total variance, appears to be a part of the seasonal variation of temperature mentioned above. In the second mode, the time coefficient is well correlated with northerly winds to which the responses of the trough and shallow coastal areas are opposite to each other. A simple theoretical consideration suggests the following physical explanation: The northerly wind stress anomaly creates an upwind (downwind) flow over the trough (coastal) areas, which then induces a temperature increase (decrease) by advection of heat, and vice versa for the southerly wind stress anomaly. Hence, this paper provides further evidence of the intermittent upwind or downwind flows occurring in the Yellow Sea every winter.

Numerical characteristics of implicit upwind schemes, such as upwind ADI, line Gauss-Seidel (LGS) and point Gauss-Seidel (LU) algorithms, for Navier-Stokes equations have been investigated. Time-derivative preconditioning method was applied for efficient convergence at low Mach/Reynolds number regime as well as at large grid aspect ratios. All the algorithms were expressed in approximate factorization form and von Neumann stability analysis was performed to identify stability characteristics of the above algorithms in the presence of high grid aspect ratios. Stability analysis showed that for high aspect ratio computations, the ADI and LGS algorithms showed efficient damping effect up to moderate aspect ratio if we adopt viscous preconditioning based on min-CFL/max-VNN time-step definition. The LU algorithm, on the other hand, showed serious deterioration in stability characteristics as the grid aspect ratio increases. Computations for several practical applications also verified these results.
In devising a numerical approximation for the convective spatial transport of a fluid mechanical quantity, it is noted that the convective motion of a scalar quantity occurs in one-way, or from upstream to downstream. This consideration leads to a new scheme termed a pure upwind difference scheme (PUDS) in which an estimated value for a fluid mechanical quantity at a control surface is not influenced from downstream values. The formal accuracy of the proposed scheme is third order accurate. Two typical benchmark problems of a wall-driven fluid flow in a square cavity and a buoyancy-driven natural convection in a tall cavity are computed to evaluate performance of the proposed method. for comparison, the widely used simple upwind scheme, power-law scheme, and QUICK methods are also considered. Computation results are encouraging: the proposed PUDS sensitized to the convection direction produces the least numerical diffusion among tested convection schemes, and, notable improvements in representing recirculation of fluid stream and spatial change of a scalar. Although the formal accuracy of PUDS and QUICK are the same, the accuracy difference of approximately a single order is observed from the revealed results.

This paper presents finite element analyses solution in the travelling magnetic field problem. The travelling magnetic field problem is subject to convective-diffusion equation. Therefore, the solution derived from Galerkin-FEM with linear interpolation function may oscillate between the adjacent nodes. A simple model with Dirichlet, Neumann and Periodic boundary condition respectively, have been analyzed to investigate stabilities of solutions. It is concluded that the solution of Galerkin-FEM may oscillate according to boundary condition and element type, but that of Upwind-FFM is stable regardless boundary condition.

A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with the renormalization group (RNG) $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used to examine the effects of difference in building height on flow and pollutant dispersion in asymmetric street canyons. Three numerical experiments with different street canyons formed by two isolated buildings are performed. In the experiment with equal building height, a portal vortex is formed in the street canyon and a typical recirculation zone is formed behind the downwind building. In the experiment with the downwind building being higher than the upwind building, the ambient flow comes into the street canyon at the front of the downwind building and incoming flow diverges strongly in the street canyon. Hence, pollutants released therein are strongly dispersed through the lateral sides of the street canyon. In the experiment with the upwind building being higher than the downwind building, a large recirculation zone is formed behind the upwind building, which is disturbed by the downwind building. Pollutants are weakly dispersed from the street canyon and the residue concentration ratio is largest among the three experiments. This study shows that the difference in upwind and downwind building height significantly influences flow and pollutant dispersion in and around the street canyon.

The CSCM Upwind method and Material Transport Analysis (MTA) have been used to predict the thermal response and ablation rate for non-charring material to be used as thermal protection material (TPM) in KSR-III test rocket nozzle. The thermal boundary conditions such as cold wall heat-transfer rate and recovery enthalpy for MTA code are obtained from the upwind Navier-Stokes solution procedure. The heat transfer rate and temperature variations at rocket nozzle wall were studied with shape change of the nozzle surface as time goes by. The surface recession was severely occurred at nozzle throat and this affected nozzle performance such as thrust coefficient substantially.

In this paper the CSCM type upwind flux difference splitting Navier-Stokes method has been applied to study the ARL-SL19 supersonic/transonic compressor cascade flow. H-type grid was chosen for its simplicity in applying cyclic tridiagonal matrix algorithm along with conventional slip/no-slip boundary conditions. The thin-layer algebraic model of Baldwin-Lomax was employed for the calculation of turbulent flows. The test case inlet Mach No. was 1.612 and inlet/exit pressure ratio($P_2/P_1$) was 2.15. The results were compared with experimental results from current method were compared well in suction surface with the experiments and other computational results; however, not well in pressure surface. It might be due to the complex flowfields such as shock/boundary layer interaction, turbulence, and flow separation, etc. In the future, a proper turbulence modelling and adaptive grid system will be studied to improve the solution quality.
In engineering application of large eddy simulation, there are still questions as follows grid dependency on numerical results, the effect of upwind scheme against a calculation instability, appropriate boundary conditions dealing with turbulence fluctuation and the performance of SGS models. In this study, in order to develop the LES to the engineering application, large eddy simulation was carried out to investigate the effect of upwind scheme, turbulent subgrid model and the grid dependancy of the flow around a wall-mounted cube in a channel at Re=40,000 based on cubic height and bulk mean velocity. The computed velocities, turbulence quantities, separation and reattachment length were evaluated compared with the experimental results of R. Matinuzzi and C. Tropea.
Effect of Shantung Peninsula on the development of mean upwind flow in the Yellow Sea in winter is analysed using a simple model. The results indicate that the disturbances generated by the Shantung Peninsula have a scale much larger than the basin scale whereas disturbances, if any, generated similarly on the other side of the trough has much smaller scale. The effect of Shantung Peninsula thus dominates over the whole basin and deflects westward the otherwise northward upwind flow.

A second-order accuracy upwind scheme is used to investigate the run-up heights of tsunamis in the East Sea and the predicted results are compared with field observed data and results of a first-order accuracy upwind scheme, In the numerical model, the governing equations solved by the finite difference scheme are the linear shallow-water equations in deep water and nonlinear shallow-water equations in shallow water The target events is 1993 Hokktaido Nansei Oki Tsunami. The predicted results represent reasonably the run-up heights of tsunamis in the East Sea. And, The results of simulation is used to design inundation map.
