  • An upper bound elemental technique(UBET) program has been developed to analyze forging load, die-cavity filling and effective strain distribution for flash and flashless forgings. The program consists of forward and backward tracing processes. In the forward program, flash, die filling and forging load are predicted. In backward tracing process, the optimum dimensions of initial billet in conventional forging are determined from the final-shape data based on flash design. And the analysis is described for merit of flashless precision forging. Experiments are carried out with pure plasticine billets at room temperature. The theoretical predictions of forging load and flow pattern are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • We consider the graph disconnection problem, which is to find a set of edges such that the total cost of destroying the edges is no more than a given budget and the weight of nodes disconnected from a designated source by destroying the edges is maximized. The problem is known to be NP-hard. We present an integer programming formulation for the problem and develop an algorithm that includes a preprocessing procedure for reducing the problem size, a heuristic for providing a lower bound, and a cutting plane algorithm for obtaining an upper bound. Computational results for evaluating the performance of the proposed algorithm are also presented.

  • An upper bound elemental technique (UBET) program has been developed to predict forging load, die-cavity filling, preform in non-axisymmetric forging. To analyze the process easily, it is suggested that the deformation is divided into two different parts. Those are axisymmetric part in corner, plane-strain part in lateral. The plane-strain and axisymmetric parts are combined by building block method. And the total energy is computed through combination of three deformation parts. A dumbbell-type preform has been obtained from height and volumetric compensations of the billet based on the backward simulation. Experimetns have been carried out with pure plasticine at room temperature. Theoretical predictions are in good agreement with expereimental results.

  • The author measured the distance from mental foramen to the occusal plane and classified the positional frequency of mental foramen to the tooth site using topography. The results were obtained as follow; 1. Of 964 mental foramen taken, the common site was in 2nd premolar region showing 64.08 per cent in right and 57.17 per cent in left site. 2. The average distance from occlusal plane to the upper border of premolar region was 23.20㎜. and lower border was 25.07㎜. 3. The positional variation of mental foramen was 4.77 per cent were located above the apex of the nearest tooth, and 50.42 per cent were located at the apex of the nearest tooth and 44.81 per cent were located below the apex of the nearest tooth.

  • An upper bound elemental technique(UBET) is applied to predict forging load and die-cavity filling for non-axisymmetric ring forging. The finial product is divided into three different deformation regions. That is axisymmetric part in corner, lateral plane-strain part and shear deformation on boundaries between them. The plane-strain and axisymmetric part are combinded by building block method. Also the total energy is computered through combination of three deformation part. Experiments have been carried out with pure plasticine billets at room temperature. The theoretical predictions of the forging load and the flow pattern are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The dynamic propagation of an interface crack between two dissimilar functionally graded layers under anti-plane shear is analyzed using the integral transform method. The properties of the functionally graded layers vary continuously along the thickness. A constant velocity Yoffe-type moving crack is considered. Fourier transform is used to reduce the problem to a dual integral equation, which is then expressed to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Numerical values on the dynamic energy release rate (DERR) are presented. Followings are helpful to increase of the resistance of the interface crack propagation of FGM: a) increase of the gradient of material properties; b) increase of the material properties from the interface to the upper and lower free surface; c) increase of the thickness of FGM layer. The DERR increases or decreases with increase of the crack moving velocity.

  • Lecanora muralis was found on the rock along coastal line during the field trip in Jeju island in 2006. Thallus crustose, placodioid, closely adnate, forming orbicular patches; upper surface grayish green, glossy; central lobes areolate, marginal parts plane, edges thin pruinose; lower surface ecorticate; apothecia sessile, lecanorine type, exciple dense and intact when young, and disc plane, but when mature, exciple laciniate, disc protrudent, yellowish brown to orange, $0.5{\sim}1.5$ mm in diameter; ascospores ellipsoid, simple, colorless, $12.5{\sim}15.0{\times}5.0{\sim}7.5\;{\mu}m$. Usnic acid and zeorin contained in thallus. This is the first record of this species in South Korea.

  • The present study deals with the numerical analysis of the symmetric contact problem of two bonded layers resting on an elastic half plane compressed with a rigid punch. In this context, Finite Element Method (FEM) based software called ANSYS and ABAQUS are used. It is assumed that the elastic layers have different elastic constants and heights and the external load is applied to the upper elastic layer by means of a rigid stamp. The problem is solved under the assumptions that the contact between two elastic layers, and between the rigid stamp are frictionless, the effect of gravity force is neglected. To validate the constructed model and obtained results a comparison is performed with the analytical results in literature. The numerical results for normal stresses and shear stresses are obtained for various parameters of load, material and geometry and are tabulated and illustrated.

  • Recent case series and meta-analyses have suggested that robot-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) could be a useful alternative to video-assisted thoracic surgery esophagectomy. The advantages of RAMIE are a 3-dimensional view, 7 degrees of freedom, and tremor filtering, which enable more meticulous lymph node dissection with a lower incidence of complications. However, in radical esophagectomy, understanding the concepts of the fascia and compartment is crucial for successful and reliable dissection. The first RAMIE in Korea was performed by our team in July 2006, and since then, we have developed related techniques to achieve better short- and long-term outcomes. The key step in RAMIE for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma is dissection of the upper mediastinum due to the difficulty of lymph node dissection and the high incidence of nodal metastasis in the area. Herein, we describe the technique of fascial plane dissection with esophageal suspension during RAMIE.
