  • The flow around a rotating circular cylinder near a plane wall is investigated by the measurement of the lift acting on the cylinder and by the flow visualization using the hydrogen bubble technique in the circulating water tank. The experimental parameters are the rotating direction of the cylinder. the space ratios $H/D(H/D=0.05{\sim}0.5)$ between cylinder and plane wall and the velocity ratios ${\alpha}({\alpha}=0{\sim}{\pm}2.0)$. In the case of clockwise, the lift on the rotating circular cylinder was increased with the reduction of the space ratios and with the velocity ratios, the upper separation point was more shifted in the rotating direction with them. In the case of anticlockwise, the absolute value of the lift on the rotating circular cylinder was increased with increasing the space ratios and the velocity ratios. the lower separation point was more shifted in the rotating direction with them.

  • In this article we will present a method to directly evaluate the critical point of a non-linear system by using the solution of a polynomial eigenvalue approximation as a starting point for an iterative non-linear system solver. This method will be used to evaluate out-of-plane buckling properties of truss structures for which the lateral displacement of the upper chord has been prevented. The aim is to assess for a number of example structures whether or not the linearized eigenvalue solution gives a relevant starting point for an iterative non-linear system solver in order to find the minimum positive critical load.

  • Au upper bound elemental technique(UBET) program has been developed to analyze forging load die-cavity filling and optimum kinematically admissible velocity fields for flashless forging. The simulation for flashless forgings are applied plane-strain and axisymmetric closed-die forging with rib-web type cavity. The kinematically admissible velocity fields for inverse triangular and inverse trapezoidal elements are used to analyze flashless forging,. Experiments have been carried out with pure plasticine billets at room temperature. Theoretical predictions of the forging load in plane-strain and axisymmetric forging are in good agreement with experimental results.

  • The behavior of corner crack propagation by unidirectional plane bending fatigue was investigated in the butt welded joints of SS41 and SM50 steel plates including an edge through-thickness notch. The properties of fatigue crack propagation were inspected in the weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal of the welded joints. Main results obtained are as follows; (1) When a plate with an edge through-thickness notch is loaded by plane bending fatigue in indirection, the 2 variant corner cracks on the upper and lower edge of the plate are initiated and propagated respectively from the notch. (2) In case of a specimen containing a corner crack, it is more reasonable to estimate the crack propagation rate by area of fracture surface than by crack surface length. (3) The rate of fatigue crack propagation becomes faster in the following order; weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal. (4) The specimen including reinforcement shape is rapidly failed throughout bond due to effect of its shape when the repeated load exceeds a certain cycle.

  • Statement of problem: It is very important to establish the suitable position for artificial maxillary anterior teeth and the orientation of occlusal plane in fabrication of the complete dentures. Incisive papilla has been considered the most useful anatomic landmark in the arranging of a maxillary anterior artificial teeth. Purpose: To determine correct position of upper anterior artificial teeth in complete denture patients, relationship of incisive papilla, intercanine line, occlusal plane were evaluated in Korean adults. Materials and Method: Maxillary casts were made in 60 Korean dentate subjects. Each cast was mounted in Hanau modular articulator using Hanau spring bow. Then, anatomic landmarks were determined in each cast. Distance from central incisor to incisive papilla, distance from incisive papilla to intercanine line and discrepancies between frankfurt plane and occlusal plane were measured and analysed. Results: 1. The mean distance between the posterior point of incisive papilla and the incisal edge of central incisor was 11.20 mm (in male 11.77 mm, in female 10.55 mm) and there was no significant difference in measured values between male and female 2. The mean distance between the posterior point of incisive papilla and intercanine line was 2.52 mm (Male 2.57 mm, Female 2.35 mm) and there were no significant differencies in measured values between male and female 3. The mean discripancy between the Frankfurt plane and the occlusal plane were 9. 75 degree (Male 9.81 degree, Female 9.55 degree), and there was no significant difference in measured values between left and right sides.

  • An upper bound solution is obtained to perform the process analysis of hot strip rolling process. The material flows within the roll bite at various geometries and frictional conditions are obtained from finite element analysis and the typical flow pattern which is necessary to determine the kinematically admissible velocity field is assumed. From the kinematically admissible velocity field, the upper bound energy is calculated and the rolling load, angle of neutral point and forward slip ratio at various operational conditions are obtained from upper bound energy. The process analysis of above mentioned parameters at various operational conditions have provided valuable information which is hard to obtain during rolling operation and the predicted ranges of quantitive values from these analyses lie whthin the bound of actual operational data.

  • The twisting and extrusion process of the product with involute helical fin from the round billet is developed by the upper bound analysis. The twisting of extruded product is caused by the twisted inclined die surface connecting the die enterance section and the die exit section linearly. In the analysis, the internal shear surface is defined as the curved twisted plane from the twisting of die surface and the shear work is calculated by the consumption of shear energy. The increase rate of angular velocity is determined by the minimization of plastic work. The angular velocity of die exit can be controlled by the land length and the length of inclined die. The alular velocity assums to be increased linearly by the axial distance from the die enterance to the die exit. The results of the analysis show that the angular velocity of the extruded product increases with the die twisting angle, the reduction of area, and decreases with the die length, the friction constant.
