Upland weed control in Korea has been in dilema with the radical problems prior to weed problems, as it were, poor farming conditions, low yielding, no farmers concern, lack of political cares, and low returns for farming, etc. In these respects, the study was intended to collect all concerns to upland farming conditions and to array all research informations contributed upon Korea upland weeding, and at last interpreted its problems in order of importance. Especially expecting the reasonable and common use herbicides upon the most uplands in Korea, the crop compatibility and weeding efficacy by the most herbicides upon each crops were investigated from the experiment results. Among other interpretations of research results, the most important and first of all acceptance was for the direction and methods of weed research to be rationalized. And that weeding programs in level of upland farmers should be cautionsely and gradually propagated was interpreted to be accepted. Also, for the reasonable development of upland weeding situation in near future, the integrated promotion of upland farming rationalization is suggested by schematic explanations.
This is a comparative study on the policy of Korea and Japan for improving upland farming mechanization. Purpose of the study is to set a policy direction of improving efficiency of farm management by using agricultural machinery. Research topic is the agricultural mechanization policy at the national level. The research attempts to classify mechanization policies into framework plan, R&D, rent and lease program, upland farm promotion policies. Major features of the comparative analysis are followed. First, there is a similarity between policies of Korea and Japan in terms of the aim of framework plan and other policies settings. However, Japanese policies focus more on the joint management of farming than Korean policies. Japanese policies take an entire system covering from farm to market into account. Second, Japanese policies have much attention to the agricultural organizations such as corporate, cooperatives that are eligible for using agricultural machinery. This is different from Korean policy. Thus, upland farming mechanization policy needs to set priority, and to have systemic approach. Also, upland farming mechanization policy has to be facilitated in accordance with producer organizations and their marketing strategies.
Multifunctionality of agriculture which cannot be in trade has internationally an important issue due to its environmental and public benefits. The purpose of this study was to estimate economic value of upland farming in cooling effect during hot summer. Economic value of cooling effect was evaluated by the replacement cost method. To evaluate the cooling effect from July through August, the amount of evapotranspiration in upland was estimated using crop coefficients and soil water coefficients perviously reported by several researchers. In July and August, average crop coefficient of fourteen major upland crops was 1.19 and average soil water coefficient of major textures of upland soil was 0.91. The estimated evapotranspiration in upland from July through August was $1,224{\times}10^6Mg$, and this amount of evapotranspiration can consume $7.1{\times}10^{14}kcal$ of heat. When these values were converted to the price of petroleum, the economic value of cooling effect by upland farming from July through August was about 12 trillion won.

In order to share the understanding agricultural multifunctionality with people, we carried out quantification and monetary evaluation for controlling flood and fostering water resources function in paddy and upland farming in Korea. The amount of water controlling flood and fostering water resources function in paddy farming was much greater than that in upland. The quantification of flood control function could be estimated by sum of the height of dike and water infiltrated during the flooding periods in paddy farming, and water excepting runoff water from precipitation at flooding time in upland farming. As results of estimation of flood control function, the amounts of water controlling flood have been evaluated as $294mm\;year^{-1}$ in paddy farming and $72.6mm\;year^{-1}$ upland farming, and was calculated 3.71 billion MT on a nation basis in 2006. When it was carried out monetary estimation as the cost of dam construction and the depreciation expense by using replacement cost method, flood control functions in paddy and upland were evaluated as 44,338.9 and 7,221.5 billion won, respectively. Comparing with previous reports, monetary value was analyzed much to increase because of rising price cost recently. Fostering water resource functions were also quantified in paddy and upland farming as the amount of water keeping and infiltrating water during the cultivation. In the basis of estimation model, it was showed that paddy and upland farming had been estimated to have $414.28mm\;year^{-1}$, $18.7mm\;year^{-1}$, respectively. They were also calculated to 4.49 and 0.137 billion MT on a nation basis in 2006, respectively. The economic values of fostering water resources function in paddy and upland farming were also estimated to 1,769.4 and 52.8 billion won, respectively, as replacing the amount of water to the cost of drinking water in 2006. There were differences by much to the amounts of controlling flood function and fostering water resource between paddy and upland farming. It means that paddy farming more play an important role in environment than upland farming in Korea.
In the marginal upland areas of East Java, Indonesia, ruminants provide farming households with tradable assets in addition to manure and draught power. Households are interested in acquiring ruminants at an early stage of household development. This paper discusses farmers' access to cattle via sharing arrangements. In these arrangements owners lend animals to other farmers in retum for a share of the offspring or the profits. Livestock owners only entrust cattle to households with prior experience in livestock keeping and sufficient labour. Details of the sharing contracts differ between villages. Changes in cattle numbers and ownership over time are attributed to patterns of the development of village agriculture and the economic development of farming households. Feed shortages in the dry season bring about short-term changes; cattle numbers decline and the proportion of households rearing shared cattle increases. The institution of sharing plays a major role in replenishing herds after periods of severe drought.
In order to find out the effect of low level of starch acetylation on physicochemical properties of potato starch, amylose content, digestibility of raw and gelatinized starch, thermal properties, pasting properties, and the swelling power of native and acetylated potato starches were measured. The amylose content was significantly lower in acetylated starch than in their counterpart native starches. Though a tendency in the decrease in digestibility of raw starch was observed with starch acetylation, acetylation did not alter the proportion of readily digestible starch (RDS), slowly digestible starch (SDS), and resistant starch (RS) of both raw and gelatinized potato starches. No clear increase in the swelling power was observed, however, the peak and onset gelatinization temperatures and the enthalpy required for starch gelatinization decreased with starch acetylation. Peak and breakdown viscosities were reduced due to acetylation of potato starch while final viscosity and set back were increased.
The earthworm was investigated for knowing about that he inhabits in grassland, orchard field, organic farming land, greenhouse land, and ordinary farming land according to use of upland. The earthworm lives all in grassland and orchard field where was investigated, in 6 among 8 sites of organic farming land, in 5 among 12 sites of greenhouse land, in 5 among 25 sites of ordinary farming land. The earthworms that were shown are the Lumbricidae and the Megascolecidae. The number of the earthworm was 14 in orchard field, 12 in grassland, 10 in organic farming land, 7 in greenhouse land and 3 in ordinary farming land. The weight of the earthworms was declined in order of 12.3 g in orchard field, 11.6 g in organic farming land, 10.6 g in grassland, 4.2 g in greenhouse land and 2.9 g/0.25 m$^2$in ordinary farming land. If the water content of soil is not below 5% or over 35%, earthworm was no problem to live in. It was examined that the earthworm could live if pH values was not just strong acid or alkal. And if the organic matter is below 1%, the earthworm do not live but move another place.
National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) has proposed new methodology for estimating unit load in order to overcome the limitations of past unit load based on short-term and local area based data. In the case of agricultural land, however, the results presented by NIER are still limited because of various agricultural activities and farmland characteristics. In this study, liquid manure treated paddy field and organic farming upland were selected for considering agricultural diversity. Four different methods for evaluating unit load were used for comparing previous research results. The results of different methods presented various trends compared with those of existing studies. Paddy field treated liquid manure was 1.3 times higher for T-N load and 3.1 times for T-P load than conventional paddy field. Conventional upland was 4.4 times higher for T-N load and 1.8 times higher for T-P load than organic farming upland. In the case of non-conventional farmland, this study showed different values with the unit loads presented by NIER. This implies that it is necessary to review and apply the unit loads considering various agricultural conditions when establishing environmental policy and rural planning.

Although some skeptical views arguing that the impact of organic farming is quite limited to sustainable biodiversity, the organic agriculture has been generally accepted to have positive effects on various properties of soils not only on biophysical and ecological properties but also on biodiversity of the field. Therefore, this field investigation has been conducted to examine the effect of organic farming, relative to conventional agriculture, through a comparative investigations of the two systems for conserving local biodiversity of invertebrate animals. For this research, organic and conventional farming locations matched with both of a paddy field and a upland fields in Goesan-gun province (Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea) were selected to compare the species richness of invertebrate biodiversity as follows: location OP (Organic Paddy field), location OU (Organic Upland field), location CP (Conventional Paddy field), and location CU (Conventional Upland field). Among 249 species collected, the numbers of species collected in the locations practicing organic farming were greater than the locations practicing conventional farming both in paddy fields (104 vs. 84 species) and upland fields (108 vs. 77 species). Changes in species richness can be shown in the selected locations depending on the agriculture system with organic (50 species) or conventional (44 species) farming systems in the paddy fields, similarly with organic (42 species) or conventional (35 species) farming in the upland fields, respectively. Our present research clearly shows that a wide range of taxa, including insects, spiders and other invertebrates, benefit from organic management through increases in abundance or species richness. It has been also identified that four orders (Hemiptera, Diptera, Hynemoptera, and Araneae) that are largely intrinsic to organic paddy field, and another three orders (Hemiptera, Coleoptera, and Araneae) that are particularly beneficial for organic crop field regime.
Various physical properties of soils were investigated in the areas where organic farming had been practiced widely, for upland fields. The investigations were also conducted in the nearby fields under conventional to find out the influence of organic farming on the physical properties of soils. The investigated properties involved bulk density, hardness, shearing resistance, friction resistance, sinking depth of small rectangular board, water stable aggregates and the depth of soil available to plants. By and large, the practice of organic farming tended to improve all of the physical properties soils, investigated in upland soils. However, in case of water stable soil aggregates in upland soils, the reverse was previous data; in those soils water stable soil aggregates were less under organic farming. It was suspected that this might be due to intensive application of the organic materials with high C/N ratio like wood chips and wood bark. The contents of OM, Av. P2O5, and Ex. cations were higher in organic farming than those of nearby fields under conventional, due to heavy organic matter application. From the results, It could be concluded that soils under organic farming were looser and softer than those under conventional as shown by lower bulk density and hardness, but that the effect of organic farming on water stable aggregates were low.
