  • This paper addresses several issues on data caching and consistency of cached data in order to process client's queries efficiently in client/server environments. For the purpose, first of all, materialized spatial views are adapted in a client side for data caching, which is called client views. Also, an incremental update scheme using derivation relationships is applied to keep cached data of clients consistent with the rest of server databases. Materialized views support efficient query processing in a client side, however, it is difficult to keep consistent their contents by the update of a server database. In this paper, we devise cost functions on query execution and view maintenance based the cost of spatial operators so as to process client's queries efficiently. When request the client's query, in our query processing scheme, the server determines whether or not materialize it as a view due to evaluation using the related cost functions. Since the scheme supports a hybrid approach based on both view materialization and re-execution, hence, it should improve query execution times in client/server environments.

  • A data warehouse is an integrated and summarized collection of data that can efficiently support decision making process. The summarized data at the data warehouse is often stored in materialized views. These materialized views need to be updated when source data change. Since the propagation of updates to the views may impose a significant overhead, it is very important to update the warehouse views efficiently. Though various strategies have been proposed to maintain views in the past, they typically require too much accesses to the data sources when the changes of multiple data sources have to be reflected in the view. In this paper we propose an efficient view update strategy that uses relatively small number of accesses to the data sources. We also show the performance advantage of our method over other existing methods through experiments using TPC-D data and queries.

  • With the increasing number of subscribers in the mobile communication, the reduction of the cell size and the increment of roaming frequency have increased the cost of location management. In order to reduce the cost of location management, we propose a new strategy of location management. In this scheme, whether the terminal executes location update or not is decided both by the call arrival probability in a new LA and by the number of location updates which are unexecuted despite that the terminal moved into a new LA. The call arrival probability is computed using the predicted information about the terminal mobility pattern. We simulated to evaluate our strategy's performance. In the high mobility prediction level, this scheme reduces the cost of location update considerably. Even though it is in the low mobility prediction level, the cost does not exceed that of IS-41 at most. This scheme also showed better performance, compared with that of AS(Alternative Strategy) which requires an overhead such as predicted information maintenance.

  • Wireless sensors play important roles in various areas as ubiquitous computing is generalized. Depending on applications properties, each sensor can be equipped with limited computing power in addition to general function of gathering environment-related information. One of main issues in this environment is to improve energy-efficiency in sensor nodes. In this paper, we devise a new attribute-query processing algorithm. Each sensor has to maintain partial information locally about attributes values gathered at its all descendent nodes. As the volume is higher, however, the maintenance cost also increases. And the update cost also has to be considered in the proposed algorithm. Thus, some bits, AVB(Attribute-Value Bits), are delivered instead of the value itself, where each bit represents a bound of attribute. Thus, the partial information can decrease the number of exchanged messages with a little cost during query processing. Through simulation works, the proposed algorithm is analyzed from several points of view.

  • Clustering is an effective method for improving the performance of large scale mobile ad hoc networks. However, when the moving speed is very fast, the topology changes quickly, which leads to frequent cluster topology updates. The drastically increasing control overheads severely threaten the throughput of the network. SCBCS (Signal Characteristic Based Cluster Scheme) is proposed as a method to potentially reduce the control overheads caused by cluster formation and maintenance in aeronautical ad hoc networks. Each node periodically broadcasts Hello packets. The Hello packets can be replaced by data packets, which preserve bandwidth. The characteristics of the received packets, such as the Doppler shift and the power of two successive Hello packets, help to calculate the relative speed and direction of motion. Then, the link connection lifetime is estimated by the relative speed and direction of motion. In the clustering formation procedure, the node with the longest estimated link connection time to its one-hop neighbors is chosen as the cluster head. In the cluster maintenance procedure, re-affiliation and re-clustering schemes are designed to keep the clusters more stable. The re-clustering phenomenon is reduced by limiting the ripple effect. Simulations have shown that SCBCS prolongs the link connection lifetime and the cluster lifetime, which can reduce the topology update overheads in highly dynamic aeronautical ad hoc networks.

  • This study aims to construct a management system of road position information as part of the build-up to a maintenance and management system of highways. First, information on the positions of the roads were obtained by a real-time kinematic satellite surveying, and then the degree of accuracy was analyzed in comparison with the data of the existing design drawings. The linear coordinates of road center line obtained by using RTK GPS showed about 7.6-13.2cm errors in X and Y directions in the case of the national road No.2 section, and about 8.4-9.2cm errors in the case of local road No.1045 section. These errors were within the tolerance scope regulated by the TS survey, and could be practically used. In the case of vertical alignment, there were about 6.2cm errors in the Z direction in local road No.1045 section. Aerial photographs are normally used in producing numerical maps, and it can be practically used because the tolerance scope of the elevation control point is l0cm when the scale of aerial photographs is 1/1000. The management system of road position information, utilizing Object-Oriented Programming(OOP), was built having the data acquired in this way as the attribute data. The system developed in this way can enable us to spot the positions of road facilities, the target of management with ease, to easily update the data in case of changes in the positions of roads and road facilities, and to manage the positions of roads and road facilities more effectively.

  • VM (Virtual Machine) live migration is a server virtualization technique for deploying a running VM to another server node while minimizing downtime of a service the VM provides. Currently, in cloud data centers, VM live migration is widely used to apply load balancing on CPU workload and network traffic, to reduce electricity consumption by consolidating active VMs into specific location groups of servers, and to provide uninterrupted service during the maintenance of hardware and software update on servers. It is critical to use VMlive migration as a prevention or mitigation measure for possible failure when its indications are detected or predicted. In this paper, we propose two VNF live migration methods; one for predictive load balancing and the other for a proactive measure in failure. Both need machine learning models that learn periodic monitoring data of resource usage and logs from servers and VMs/VNFs. We apply the second method to a vEPC (Virtual Evolved Pakcet Core) failure scenario to provide a detailed case study.

  • In this paper, we propose a new intrusion detection model, which keeps advantages of existing misuse detection model and anomaly detection model and resolves their problems. This new intrusion detection system, named to MMIDS, was designed to satisfy all the following requirements : 1) Fast detection of new types of attack unknown to the system; 2) Provision of detail information about the detected types of attack; 3) cost-effective maintenance due to fast and efficient learning and update; 4) incrementality and scalability of system. The fast and efficient training and updating faculties of proposed novel multi-class SVM which is a core component of MMIDS provide cost-effective maintenance of intrusion detection system. According to the experimental results, our method can provide superior performance in separating similar patterns and detailed separation capability of MMIDS is relatively good.

  • In this present study, in order to update the finite element model considering the boundary conditions, a method has been proposed. The conventional finite element model updating method, updates the finite element model by using the dynamic characteristics (natural frequency, mode shape) which can be estimated from the ambient vibration test. Therefore, prediction of the static response of an actual structure is difficult. Furthermore, accurate estimation of the physical properties is relatively hard. A novel method has been proposed to overcome the limitations of conventional method. Initially, the proposed method estimates the rotational spring constant of a finite element model using the deflection of structure and the rotational displacement of support measurements. The final updated finite element model is constructed by estimating the material properties of the structure using the finite element model with updated rotational spring constant and the dynamic characteristics of the structure. The proposed finite element model updating method is validated through numerical simulation and compared with the conventional finite element model updating method.
