Unsteady flow simulations through a transonic turbine vane were carried out for an isentropic Mach number of 1.02 and a Reynolds number of $10^6$. The main objective of the study is to investigate the effect of unsteadiness due to vortex shedding on the flow in transonic regime. The steady and the time-averaged unsteady results by employing three different turbulence models: shear stress transport (SST), k-${\omega}$, and ${\omega}$ Reynolds stress models were compared. The comparisons were emphasized on the isentropic Mach number along the blade and total pressure loss at the cascade exit. The results showed that both steady and unsteady calculations have good agreement with experimental data along the blade surface. However, at cascade exit, the unsteady calculations have much better agreement with experimental data than steady calculations. Based on these, we conclude that the unsteady flow calculations are essential for these types of problems.

An experimental study was made of turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a backward-facing step, where unsteady wake was generated by a spoked-wheel type wake generator with cylindrical rods in front of the separated flow. The influence of unsteady wake was scrutinized in terms of the rotating speed of the wake generator (0$\leq$S $t_{H}$$\leq$0.4). A conditional averaging technique in corporation with SBF was employed to elucidate the influence of the unsteady wake on the large-scale vortical structures of the separated flow. Special attention was made during two-dimensional measurements of wall-pressure with or without unsteady wake. The wall-pressure fluctuations were used to predict dipole sound source by Curie's integral formula. It was found that the reduction of the dipole sound source was due to the reduction of turbulent kinetic energy by unsteady wake in the recirculation region.n.

No-load speed is an important performance factor for the safe operation of hydropower systems. In turbine design, the manufacturers must conduct several model tests to calculate the accurate value of no-load speed for the complete range of operating conditions, which are expensive and time-consuming. The present study presents steady and unsteady methods for calculating no-load speed of a Francis turbine. The steady simulations are implemented using a commercial flow solver and an iterative algorithm that relies on a smooth relation between turbine torque and speed factor. The unsteady method uses unsteady RANS simulations that have been integrated with a user subroutine to compute and return the value of runner speed, time step and friction torque. The main goal of this research is to evaluate and compare the two methods by calculating turbine dynamic parameters for three test cases consisting of high and medium head Francis turbines. Overall, the numerical results agreed well with experimental data. The unsteady method provided more accurate results in the opening angle range from 20 to 26 degrees. Nevertheless, the steady results showed more consistency than unsteady results for the three different test cases at different operating conditions.

The extinction behavior and the unsteady response of augmented reduced mechanism(ARM) have been investigated by adopting an OPPDIF code and a numerical solver for the flamelet equations. By comparing the performance of the ARM based on Miller and Bowman's mechanism(MB-ARM) with that of the ARM based on GRI-Mech 3.0(GRI-3.0-ARM), it is identified that the MB-ARM is more suitable for the unsteady calculation because it is relatively less stiff than GRI-3.0-ARM during an ignition process. The steady results using the MB-ARM, which is modified to predict reasonably the extinction point of experiment, are in excellent agreement with those from full mechanism. Under the sinusoidal transient disturbances of scalar dissipation rate, the unsteady responses of the flame temperature and species concentrations using a modified MB-ARM show in very close agreement with those from full mechanism. It is presumed that above modified MB-ARM is very suitable for the unsteady simulation of turbulent flames because it gives not only a low computational cost but also a good prediction performance for flame structure, extinction point and unsteady response.
This study aims at the analyze of unsteady downstream flow due to dam failure along dam failure scenario and applied to Yeoncheon Dam which was collapsed August 1st 1999, using HEC-RAS simulation model. The boundary conditions of this unsteady flow simulation are that dam failure arrival time could be at 02:45 a.m. August 1st 1999 and failure duration time could be also 30 minutes. Downstream 19.5 km from dam site was simulated for unsteady flow analysis in terms of dam failure and non-failure cases. For the parameter calibration, observed data of Jeonkok station were used and roughness coefficient was applied to simulation model. The result of the peak discharge difference was 2,696 to $1,745\;m^3/sec$ along the downstream between dam failure and non-failure and also peak elevation of water level showed meanly 0.6m difference. Those results of these studies show that dam failure scenarios for the unknown failure time and duration were rational because most results were coincident with observed records. And also those results and procedure could suggest how and when dam failure occurs and downstream unsteady flow analyzes.

The inherent aeromechanical complexity of a rotor system necessitated the comprehensive analysis code for helicopter rotor system. In the present study, an aerodynamic analysis module has been developed as a part of rotorcraft comprehensive program. Aerodynamic analysis module is largely classified into airload calculation routine and inflow analysis routine. For airload calculation, quasi-steady analysis model is employed based on the blade element method with the correction of unsteady aerodynamic effects. In order to take unsteady effects - body motion effects and dynamic stall - into account, aerodynamic coefficients are corrected by considering Leishman-Beddoes's unsteady model. Various inflow models and vortex wake models are implemented in the aerodynamic module to consider wake induced inflow. Specifically, linear inflow, dynamic inflow, prescribed wake and free wake model are integrated into the present module. The aerodynamic characteristics of each method are compared and validated against available experimental data such as Elliot's induced inflow distribution and sectional normal force coefficients of AH-1G. In order to validate unsteady aerodynamic model, 2-D unsteady model for NACA0012 airfoil is validated against aerodynamic coefficients of McAlister's experimental data.
The effects of the frequency of upstream gust on the unsteady boundary characteristics on a downstream blade was simulated by using a Navier-Stokes code. The Navier-Stokes code is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses a low Reynolds k-e turbulence model to close the momentum equations. The MIT flapping foil experiment set-up is used to simulate the interaction between the upstream wake and a blade. The frequency of the upstream wake is simulated by varying rate of pitching motion of the flapping airfoils. Three reduced frequencies. 3.62. 7.24. and 10.86. are simulated. As the frequency increases, the unsteady fluctuation on the surfaces of the downstream hydrofoil is shown to decrease while the upstream flapper wake has larger first harmonics of y-velocity component. The unsteady vortices are shown to interact with each other and. as a result. the upstream wake becomes undiscernible inside the inner layer. The turbulence kinetic energy shows a similar behavior. Limiting streamlines around the trailing edge of the flapper are shown to conform with the unsteady Kutta condition for a round trailing edge. while limiting streamlines around the trailing edge of the hydrofoil conforms with the unsteady Kutta condition for a sharp edge.
Missile am fighter aircraft have been challenged by low restoring nose-down pitching moment at high angle of attach. The consequence of weak nose-down pitching moment can be resulting in a deep stall condition. Especially, the pressure oscillation has a huge effect on noise generation, structure damage, aerodynamic performance and safety, because the flow has strong unsteadiness at high angle of attack. In this paper, the unsteady aerodynamics coefficients were analyzed at high angle of attack up to 60 degrees around two dimensional NACA0012 airfoil. The two dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equation with a LES turbulent model was calculated by OHOC (Optimized High-Order Compact) scheme. The flow conditions are Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of $10^5$. The lift, drag, pressure distribution, etc. are analyzed according to the angle of attack. The results at a low angle of attack are compared with other results before a stall condition. From a certain high angle of attack, the strong vortex formed by the leading edge are flowing downstream as like Karman vortex around a circular cylinder. Unsteady velocity field, periodic vortex shedding, the unsteady pressure distribution on the airfoil surface, and the acoustic fields are analyzed. The effects of these unsteady characteristics in the aerodynamic coefficients are analyzed.

In this paper, the mechanism of unsteady potential interaction and wake interaction in one stage axial turbine is numerically investigated at design point in two-dimensional viewpoint. The numerical technique used is the upwind scheme of Van-Leer's Flux Vector Splitting (FVS) and Cubic spline interpolation is applied on zonal interface between stator and rotor. The inviscid analysis is used to embody the influence of potential interaction only and viscous analysis is used to embody the influences of both potential interaction and wake interaction at the same time. The potential-flow disturbance from the stator into a rotor passage and the periodic blockage effect of rotor produce the unsteady pressure on the blade surface in inviscid analysis. After the wake is cut by rotor, two counterrotating votical patterns flanking the wake centerline in the passage are generated. So, these phenomena magnify the unsteady pressure in viscous analysis than that in inviscid analysis. The resulting unsteady forces on the rotor, generated by the combined interaction of the two effects by potential and wake interaction, are discussed.
In order to study unsteady aerodynamic loads on high speed trains passing by each other at the speed of 350km/h, three-dimensional flow fields around trains during the crossing event are numerically simulated using the three-dimensional Euler equations. The Roe's FDS with MUSCL interpolation is employed to simulate wave phenomena properly. An efficient moving grid system based on domain decomposition techniques is developed to analyze the unsteady flow field induced by the restricted motion of a train on a rail. The numerical simulations of the trains passing by on the double-track are carried out to study the effect of the train nose-shape, the train length and the existence of tunnel when the crossing event occur. Unsteady aerodynamic loads side force and drag force-acting on the train during the crossing are numerically predicted and anlayzed. It is found that the strength of the side force mainly depends on the nose-shape, and that of drag force on tunnel existence. And it is observed that the push-pull like impulsive force successively acts on each car and acts in different directions between the neighborhood cars. The maximum change of the impulsive force reaches about 3 tons. These aerodynamic force data are absolutely necessary for the evaluation of the stability of the high speed multi-car train. The results also indicate the effectiveness of the present numerical method for the simulation of unsteady flow field induced by the bodies in the relative motion.
