Experiments have been performed to test the analytical tools developed concurrently for the motion-related unsteady pressure in annular passages. The outer cylindrical body was oscillated by a shaker in either rocking motion about a hinge-point or lateral translation motion. In the equilibrium configuration the two bodies are either concentric or eccentric, in the plane of oscillation or normal to it. The unsteady pressure generated by the oscillatory motion with low amplitudes (displacement/radius) was measured on wall of the fixed inner cylinder at various axial and azimuthal locations. The unsteady pressure were compared with theoretical predictions, and agreement was found to be within 10%. Experiments have been shown that the effect of flow velocity on the unsteady pressure is minimal and the pressure increases more or less with oscillatory motion, for low flow velocities (Re = 2 900).
Flow through turbomachinery has a very complex structure and is intrinsically unsteady. Especially, recent design trend to turbomachinery with short axial spacing makes the flow extremely complex due to the interaction between stator and rotor. Therefore, it is very necessary to clearly understand the complex flow structure to obtain the high efficiency turbomachinery. So, in this paper, the effects of axial spacing on the unsteady secondary flow performance in the one stage turbine are investigated by three-dimensional unsteady flow analysis. The three-dimensional solver is parallelized using domain decomposition and Message Passing Interface(MPI) standard to overcome the limitation of memory and the CPU time in three-dimensional unsteady calculation. A sliding mesh interface approach has been implemented to exchange flow information between blade rows.

Flutter analysis procedure can be divided into two steps such as the computation of generalized mass, stiffness, and unsteady aerodynamic matrices and the calculation of major vibration modes frequency and damping values at each flight speed by solving the complex eigenvalue problem. In aircraft flutter analyses, most of the time is spent in the process of computing the unsteady aerodynamic matrices at each Mach-reduced frequency pairs defined. In this study, the method has been presented for computation and extraction of unsteady aerodynamic matrix portions dependent only on aerodynamic model using DMAP ALTER in MSC/NASTRAN SOL 145. In addition, efficient flutter analysis method has been suggested by computing and utilizing the unsteady generalized aerodynamic matrices for each analysis condition using the unsteady aerodynamic matrix portions extracted above.
A fluid transient analysis on the Koreasat 1 & 2 pipeline system is conducted through numerical parametric studies in which unsteady friction results are compared with quasi-steady friction results and show relatively accurate prediction of the response curve with the unsteady friction. The code developed and used in this analysis has finished verification through comparing with the original Zielke model, the full and recursive convolution model and quasi-steady model as a reference. The unsteady friction is calculated by the recursive convolution Zielke model in which a complete evolution history of velocity field is no longer required so that it makes the fluid transient analysis on the complicated system possible. The results show that the application of quasi-steady friction to model cannot predict the entire response curve properly except the first peak amplitude but the application of unsteady friction to model can predict reasonably the response curve, therefore it is to know the characteristics of the propulsion system.

Unsteady behaviors of counterflow flame were studied experimentally in opposing jet counterflow burner using diluted methane. To generate the unsteadiness on the flame, the counterflow diffusion flame was perturbed by velocity changes made by the pistons installed on both sides of the air and fuel stream. The velocity changes were measured by Hot wire and Laser Doppler Velocimetry, and the flame behaviors were observed by High speed ICCD and ICCD. In this investigation, the spatial irregularity of the strain rate caused the flame to extinguish from the outside to the axis during the extinction, and we found the following unsteady phenomena. First, the extinction strain rates of unsteady cases are much larger than those of the steady ones. Second, the extinction strain rates become larger as the slope of the change of the strain rate increases. Third, the unsteady extinction strain rates become smaller with the increase of the initial strain rate.

The paper proposes a model-based measurement of unsteady flow rate by using distributed parameter pipeline model and the measured pressure values at two distant points along the pipeline. The distributed parameter model of hydraulic pipeline is applied with consideration of frequency dependent viscosity friction and unsteady velocity distribution at a cross section of a pipeline. By using the self-diagnostics functions of the measurement method, the validity is investigated by comparison with the measured and estimated pressure and flow rate wave forms at the halfway section on the pipeline. The results show good agreement between the estimated flow rate wave forms and theoretical those under unsteady laminar flow conditions. The method proposed here is useful in estimating unsteady flow rate through an arbitrary cross section in hydraulic pipeline and components without installing an instantaneous flowmeter.

To optimize the ventilation and smoke control systems in subway equipped with platform screen door, the technology to analyze the unsteady tunnel flow caused by running of train should be developed. The development of model experiment and numerical analysis technique with relation to unsteady flow of subway were presented. The pressure and air velocity changes in 1/20-scaling experiment unit were measured and results were comparied to those of 3-D unsteady numerical analysis applied with sharp interface method. The experimental and numerical results were quantitatively similar and it would be reasonable to apply sharp interface method to analyze the unsteady flow in subway equipped with platform screen door.
Most of the previous works on numerical analysis of galloping of transmission lines are generally based on the quasisteady theory. However, some wind tunnel tests of the rectangular section or hangers of suspension bridges have shown that the galloping phenomenon has a strong unsteady characteristic and the test results are quite different from the quasi-steady calculation results. Therefore, it is necessary to check the applicability of the quasi-static theory in galloping analysis of the ice-covered transmission line. Although some limited unsteady simulation researches have been conducted on the variation of parameters such as aerodynamic damping, aerodynamic coefficients with wind speed or wind attack angle, there is a need to investigate the numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of two-dimensional iced transmission line with comparison to wind tunnel test results. In this paper, it is proposed to conduct a two dimensional (2-D) unsteady numerical analysis of ice-covered transmission line galloping. First, wind tunnel tests of a typical crescent-shapes iced conductor are conducted firstly to check the subsequent quasisteady and unsteady numerical analysis results. Then, a numerical simulation model consistent with the aeroelastic model in the wind tunnel test is established. The weak coupling methodology is used to consider the fluid-structure interaction in investigating a two-dimension numerical simulation of unsteady galloping of the iced conductor. First, the flow field is simulated to obtain the pressure and velocity distribution of the flow field. The fluid action on the iced conduct at the coupling interface is treated as an external load to the conductor. Then, the movement of the conduct is analyzed separately. The software ANSYS FLUENT is employed and redeveloped to numerically analyze the model responses based on fluid-structure interaction theory. The numerical simulation results of unsteady galloping of the iced conduct are compared with the measured responses of wind tunnel tests and the numerical results by the conventional quasi-steady theory, respectively.

Most of small air vehicles with moving wing fly at low Reynolds number condition and the reduced frequency of the moving wing ranges from 0.0 to 1.0. The physical phenomena over the wing dramatically vary with the reduced frequency. This study examines experimentally the effect of the reduced frequency at low Reynolds number. The NACA0012 airfoil performs sinusoidal pitching motion with respect to the quarter chord with the four reduced frequencies of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.76 at the Reynolds number $2.3{\times}10^4$. Smoke-wire flow visualization, unsteady surface pressure measurement, and unsteady force calculation are conducted. At the reduced frequency of 0.1 and 0.2, various boundary layer events such as reverse flow, discrete vortices, separation and reattachment change the amplitude and the rotation direction of the unsteady force hysteresis. However, the boundary layer events abruptly disappear at the reduced frequency of 0.4 and 0.76. Especially at the reduced frequency of 0.76, the local variation of the unsteady force with respect to the angle of attack completely vanishes. These results lead us to the conclusion that the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the reduced frequency of 0.2 and 0.4 are clearly distinguishable and the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics below the reduced frequency of 0.2 are governed by the boundary layer events.
