  • Nuclear power provides 30% of our country's power, which acts as one of the most important power sources. But on March 11, 2011, the earthquake that hit Northeast Japan with a 9.0 magnitude, known as the Fukushima Reactor Leak Incident has created fear in the public's mind that 'nuclear power is unstable'. The reason for such distrust are many but inaccurate reports of the incident by the media has added to the fear. This paper will analyze the contents of the media report of the heavy water leakage in reactor 3 at the Wolsong Nuclear Power Plant on October 4, 1999 to discover the problematic areas and ascertain a more appropriate method of media coverage.

  • The aircraft nose landing gear (NLG) can suffer of an unstable vibration called shimmy that is responsible of discomfort and of fatigue stress on the gear strut components. An adaptive controller is proposed in this paper to cope with the aforementioned problem. It is based on a method called Modified Simple Adaptive control (MSAC) which is able of governing the NLG motion by using a feedback signal that relies on just one output of the plant. The MSAC only asks for the passivity of the controlled plant. With this aim, a parallel feedforward compensator is employed in this work to let the system satisfies the almost strictly passivity (ASP) requirements. The nonlinear equations that govern the aircraft NLG shimmy vibration behavior are used to analyzed the controlled system transient response undergoing an initial disturbance and taking into account different taxiing speed values.

  • A pilot plant of underground cold storage for food has been excavated as a R&D program. For the stability assessment of underground cold storage opeinengs in shallow jointed rocks, three kinds of stability problems were analyzed by numerical methods. For the analysis of unstability by rock block movements, DEM was used considering the statistical distribution of rock joints. Concerning thermally induced cracking, FDM was used with thermomechanical stress analysis. Finally, in order to evaluate the joint failure during the thawing process, BE algorithm was applied. Numerical examples applied for the pilot plant show that the possibility of unstable failure of opeings exists but can be avoided with proper rock reinforcements provided.

  • In the multi-burner power plant, uneven supplies of combustion air to multi-burner are induced by unbalanced flow distribution in the windbox. These flow patterns tend to make flame unstable, increase the formation of pollutants and lower the overall combustion efficiency. To prevent these disadvantages, flow patterns in the windbox should be investigated and made to be distributed uniformly, In this study, scaled windbox model was used for tests and measured the velocities at the exit of the each burner and compared those with the CFD results.

  • A nonlinear tracking control technique developed for the control of nonlinear systems has been applied to the autopilot design of missile system. The difficulties in the application of inversion based control methods such as input-output feedback linearization and sliding mode control due to nonminimum phase characteristics are discussed. To avoid the stability problem associated with unstable zero dynamics, the input-output feedback linearization is applied with output-redefinition method to normal acceleration control. The output-redefinition method gives an indirect way to apply the nonlinear controls to nonminimum phase plants by redefining the plant output such that the tracking control of the modified output ensures the asymptotic tracking of the original output. The numerical simulation shows satisfactory results both for nominal and for slightly perturbed missile systems adopting the sliding mode control technique. However, the robustness problem in this method is briefly investigated and verified with the simulation.

  • It is well known that steam generator water level control at low power operation has many difficulties in a PWR (pressurized water reactor) nuclear power plant. The reverse process responses known as shrink and swell effects make it difficult to control the steam generator water level at low power. A new automatic control logic to remove the reverse process responses is proposed in this paper. It is implemented in PLC (programmable logic controller) and evaluated by using test equipment in Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The simulation test shows that the performance requirements is met at low power (below 15%). The water level control by new control logic is stabilized within 1% fluctuation from setpoint, while the water level by YGN 3 and 4 control logic is unstable with the periodic fluctuation of 25% magnitude at 5% power.

  • Discrete-time controller design is proposed using feedback system identification in frequency domain. System Stability imposed by a new controller is checked in the function of a conventional closed-loop system, instead of a poorly modeled plant due to non-linearity and disturbance as well as unstable components, etc. The stability of the system is evaluated in view of Popov criterion. All the equations are formulated in the framework of the discrete-time system. Simulation results are shown on the plant with input saturation components, DC disturbance and a pure integration.
