TMD effectiveness for steel high-rise building subjected to wind or earthquake including soil-structure interaction

  • A steel high-rise building (HRB) with 15 stories was analyzed under the dynamic load of wind or four different earthquakes taking into consideration the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI) and using tuned mass damper (TMD) devices to resist these types of dynamic loads. The behavior of the steel HRB as a lightweight structure subjected to dynamic loads is critical especially for wind load with effect maximum at the top of the building and reduced until the base of the building, while on the contrary for seismic load with effect maximum at the base and reduced until the top of the building. The TMDs as a successful passive resistance method against the effect of wind or earthquakes is used to mitigate their effects on the steel high-rise building. Lateral displacements, top accelerations and straining actions were computed to judge the effectiveness of the TMDs on the response of the steel HRB subjected to wind or earthquakes.

  • The university building which is located in Daehak-ro where the commercial buildings are. The color of the building exterior and the signs are various to distinguish. To recognize the building exterior among the surrounding areas, it needs visual and bright color on it. The blue and white selected from the color of university identity. The core of the building is treated as a tower In vertically and white color is painted. And the rest parts of the building are treated horizontally and blue color is painted. The color of the building exterior shows the visual effects not only symbolism but attention.

  • Size of building has a direct relationship with building cost, energy use and space maintenance cost. Therefore, minimizing building size during a project development is of paramount importance against such wastes. However, incautious reduction of building size may result in crowded space, and therefore harms the functionality despite the fact that building is supposed to satisfactorily support users' activity. A well-balanced design solution is, therefore, needed at an optimum level that minimizes building size in tandem with providing sufficient space to maintain functionality. For such design, architects and engineers need to be informed accurate and reliable space-use information. We present in this paper a conceptual framework of an agent-based space-use prediction simulation system that provides individual level space-use information over time in a building in consideration of project specific user information and activity schedules, space preference, ad beavioural rules. The information will accordingly assist architects and engineers to optimize space of the building as appropriate.

  • Building deterioration reflects the degradation of basic building performance including structural performance, energy performance, durability, and safety, and it also includes perceived deterioration, which considers a user-based perspective. More than 50% of the existing buildings in Korea are over 15 years old and public buildings compose 2.5% of all buildings domestically. Therefore, there are several different problems, such as poor energy efficiency, structural performance, and safety. To address the challenges of increasing stock in deteriorated buildings, it is necessary to make decisions about reconstruction or renovation. In this study, we propose a new method to evaluate public building value with a contingent valuation method (CVM). By estimating willing-to-pay (WTP) from users of private buildings in similar situation with the public building, it is possible to compare market prices and calculate a correction factor to adjust the WTP data. Finally, we apply the correction factor to the WTP of a public building and estimate market price, willingness to pay (WTP).   • According to climate change, deficiency of usable land, large water portion of the Earth surface, and improvement of income level, floating architecture is emerging as a strong & attractive alternative. The aim of this study is to suggest some related applying ways for new building projects around waterside. New paradigm of architecture can be described as a new model and/or system of architecture with new concept and Zeitgeist like sustainability and green building. Floating building is already a new paradigm of architecture comparing with the preconception of building only on the land and current building regulations. New paradigm features from the sample projects can be summarized as new concepts of building, application of various renewable energy resources(water, solar, wind), modular construction, use of local raw material, dual purpose usage, long term and relocatable usage, and special building materials for green building.

  • According to the domestic construction business will continue stagnant, many domestic construction companies are expanding their business into foreign countries. As results, building design guidelines including HVAC design for foreign countries considering the regional climate conditions are needed. Also, green building design strategies to minimize the heating and cooling load are key issue to win a contract in construction business in the world. In this study, peak heating and cooling loads were calculated for the representative cities in the world : Seoul, St. Petersburg, Singapore and Mecca. The analyzed building was a typical high-rise office building and the building envelope properties, indoor heat gain, residence and operating schedules were same in all cases. Only the weather conditions were different by cases.

  • As the scale of building construction is larger and more complex and the adaptation of new technology is increasing, the tendency of the risk serious accident cases is increasing now. Especially, the accident rate is below 10% at the building construction workers in Korea but among the total industrial accidents it exceeded by 35%. To prevent a construction accident, it is essential that not only to have a through grasp of the characteristic of safety problem but also to establish of efficient safety counter plan are required. According to the type and situation of building construction, the acquirement of necessary information is useful to prevent the hazard of work and establish the counter plan. Among the safety information it is a thing of especial importance that to estimate the hazard of work types for building construction to prepare the counter plan of safety. This study will analyze all of the1600 accidents of the building construction works from the data of KOSHA(Korea Occupational Safety &Health Agency) which were collected during 11 years(1992~2002) data relating to serious accidents of the building construction works, and suggest the counter plan according to the each work type in building construction works.

Influence of Air-tightness on Heat Energy Performance in Post and Beam Building with Exposed Wood Frame

  • Han-green building is one of the modernized Korean traditional buildings developed by Korea Forest Research Institute. This building was developed to increase the competitiveness of Korean traditional building using state-of-art technologies; hence Han-green building has the inherent characteristics of traditional building such as exposed wood frame in wall. Because of discontinuity in wall by the exposed wood frame, there is a concern on heat-air leaking in terms of energy performance. In this study, air-tightness of Han-green building was evaluated to investigate the influence of gaps between frames and in-fill walls. Blower door test was carried out to evaluate the air-tightness, and air-change rate (ACH50) was evaluated by averaging four set of pressurization and depressurization test. The air-change rate of Han-green house was 5.91 $h^{-1}$. To improve energy performance of Han-green house, thermal infrared images of Han-green house were taken in winter with heating to find out where the heat loss occurred. It was found that the building lost more heat through gaps between frames and in-fill walls rather than through other parts of this building. After covering all the gaps by taping, the blower door test was performed again, and the air-change rate was improved to 5.25 $h^{-1}$. From this analysis, it was concluded that the heated air can leak through the gaps between frames and walls. Therefore, when one designs the post and beam building with exposed frame, the detail design between frame and wall needs to be carefully dealt. However, Han-green building showed relatively high air-tightness comparing with other country research results.

Study on the Waterproofing Performance of FGD Gypsum Building Products from Inorganic-Organic Composite Additives

  • In this article, poly methyl triethoxy silane was compounded with an inorganic waterproof admixture at a certain ratio to improve the performance of gypsum products; a new type of high-efficiency compound water-proofing additive was also investigated. Furthermore, the waterproof mechanism and the various properties on the hardened gypsum plaster were investigated in detail by XRD and SEM. The results show that the intenerate coefficient of gypsum plaster increased to more than 0.9; the water absorbing rate decreased to less than 10 %. Both the bending strength and the compressive strength of gypsum plaster increased by various degrees. The intenerate coefficient reached a maximum value of 0.73 and the strength of the samples showed almost no change when 5% cement alone was added. In this new type of the high-efficiency compound with waterproof additive, the optimal technological parameters for formulas were obtained to be: 5% cement, 18 % mineral powder, and 0.8% poly methyl triethoxy silane, to compound gypsum plaster. Meanwhile, the production of high performance gypsum as a building material has become possible.
