  • The reinforced concrete column confined by square steel tubes(RCST) is a reinforced column (RC) confined by thin steel tubes which cover over the full length of the column but terminates 15mm from the column's ends. The steel tube is in uniaxial tension stress state and won't buckle when the column sustains axial load. This will highly increase the bearing capacity and ductility of the columns. The hysteretic behavior of four square RCST columns and one square RC column were experimentally studied under constant axial load and lateral cyclic load. The wide-to-thickness (D/t) ratio of RCST columns employed in this research is 75. The main variables of the experiment were axial load ratio and compressive strength of the concrete. Based on the findings in this research, RCST columns exhibits high lateral strength, ductility, and energy dissipation ability.

  • The safety and the durability of the shock absorber as an automotive chassis part under the fatigue load can be predicted in this study. The fatigue life becomes constant from 0.5 to 0.75 at the change of load which is the amplitude load divided by average load. But its life is sharply decreased at the change of load from 0.75 to 1.5. The influence of fatigue life according to the change of load can be predicted by these results. As the value of maximum damage is 9.61 at the middle part of upper side on shock absorber under the concentrated load, there is the greatest possibility of destruction at this part. The spring of shock absorber becomes nearly the state of pure shear and the uniaxial or biaxial stress exists at the rest part of it under the fatigue load.

  • This paper presents a new uniaxial material model for rate-sensitive analysis addressing both the transient and steady-state responses. The new model adopts visco-plastic theory for the rate-sensitive response, and employs a three-parameter representation of the overstress as a function of the strain-rate. The third parameter is introduced in the new model to control its transient response characteristics, and to provide flexibility in fitting test data on the variation of overstress with strain-rate. Since the governing visco-plastic differential equation cannot be integrated analytically due to its inherent nonlinearity, a new single-step numerical integration procedure is proposed, which leads to high levels of accuracy almost independent of the size of the integration time-step. The new model is implemented within the nonlinear analysis program ADAPTIC, which is used to provide several verification examples and comparison with other experimental and numerical results. The companion paper extends the three-parameter model to trilinear static stress-strain relationships for steel and concrete, and presents application examples of the proposed models.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the relationship between the short-term creep rupture time and the creep rupture properties at three different elevated temperatures in STS304 stainless steel. Uniaxial constant stress creep rupture tests were performed on the steel to observe the creep rupture behaviors at the elevated temperatures of 600, 650 and 700, according to the testing matrix. It is very important to predict creep life in practical creep design problems. As one of the series of studies on the statistical modelling of probabilistic creep rupture time and the development of creep life prediction techniques, the relationship between applied stress and creep rupture behaviors, such as creep strain rate and rupture time, were investigated. In addition, the Monkman-Grant relationship was observed between the steady-state creep rate and the creep rupture time. The creep rupture surfaces observed by SEM showed up dimple phenomenon at all conditions.

  • A micromechanical model is presented for superplasticity in which heterogeneous microstructures are coupled with deformation behavior. The effects of initial distributions of grain size, and their evolutions on the mechanical properties can be predicted by the model. Alternative stress rate models such as Jaumann rate and rotation incremental rate have been employed to analyze uniaxial loading and simple shear problems and the appropriate modeling was studied on the basis of hypoelasticity and elasto-viscoplasticity. The model has been implemented into finite element software so that full process simulation can be carried out. Tests have been conducted on Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the microstructural features such as grain size, distributions of grain size, and volume fraction of each phase were examined for the materials that were tested at different strain rates. The experimentally observed stress-strain behavior on a range of initial grain size distributions has been shown to be correctly predicted. In addition, the effect of volume fraction of the phases and concurrent grain growth were analyzed. The dependence of failure strain on strain rate has been explained in terms of the change in mechanism of grain growth that occurs with changing strain rate.

  • This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior including temperature dependent strain-rate sensitivity of steel sheet for an auto-body. In order to identify the temperature dependent strain-rate sensitivity of SPRC35R and SPRC45E, uniaxial tension tests are performed with the variation of the strain-rates from 0.001 /sec to 200 /sec at environmental temperatures varied from $-40^{\circ}C\;to\;200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained with the static tensile test and at the intermediate strain-rate is from the high speed tensile test. Experimental results show that the strain-rate sensitivity increases at low temperature. It represents that as the strain-rate increases, the variation of flow stress becomes sensitive on the temperature. The results indicate that the flow stress of SPRC35R is more dependent on the changes of strain-rate and temperature than those of SPRC45E.

  • This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior of steel sheet for an auto-body including temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity. In order to identify the temperature-dependent strain rate sensitivity of SPRC35R, SPRC45E and TRIP60, uniaxial tensile tests are performed with the variation of the strain rates from 0.001/sec to 200/sec and the variation of environmental temperatures from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained from the static tensile test and that at the intermediate strain rate is obtained from the high speed tensile test. Experimental results show that the variation of the flow stress and fracture elongation becomes sensitive to the temperature as the strain rate increases. It is observed that the dynamic strain aging occurs with TRIP60 at the temperature above $150^{\circ}C$. Results also indicate that the flow stress and tincture elongation of SPRC35R are more dependent on the changes of strain rates and temperature than those of SPRC45E and TRIP60.

  • Micromechanical facture models can be used to predict ductile fracture in steel structures. In order to calibrate the parameters in the micromechanical models for the largely used Q345 steel in China, uniaxial tensile tests, smooth notched tensile tests, cyclic notched bar tests, scanning electron microscope tests and finite element analyses were conducted in this paper. The test specimens were made from base metal, deposit metal and heat affected zone of Q345 steel to investigate crack initiation in welded steel connections. The calibrated parameters for the three different locations of Q345 steel were compared with that of the other seven varieties of structural steels. It indicates that the toughness index parameters in the stress modified critical strain (SMCS) model and the void growth model (VGM) are connected with ductility of the material but have no correlation with the yield strength, ultimate strength or the ratio of ultimate strength to yield strength. While the damage degraded parameters in the degraded significant plastic strain (DSPS) model and the cyclic void growth model (CVGM) and the characteristic length parameter are irrelevant with any properties of the material. The results of this paper can be applied to predict ductile fracture in welded steel connections.

  • This paper aims at investigating the damage process of steel members leading to the failure under strong repeated loading, proposing the damage index using various factors related to the damage, and developing the analysis method for evaluating the damage state. Cantilever-type steel members were analyzed under uniaxial load and combined with a constant axial load, considering a horizontal displacement history. In analyzing the models, loading patterns and steel types (SS400, SM570, Posten80) were considered as main parameters. From the analysis results, the effects of parameter on the failures mode, the deformation capacity, the damage process are also discussed. Each failure process was compared as steel types. Consequently, the failure of steel members under strong repeated loading was determined by loading. Especially it was seen that the state of the failure is closely related to the local strain.

  • A detailed understanding of the mechanical behaviors for crushed coal rocks after grouting is a key for construction in the broken zones of mining engineering. In this research, experiments of grouting into the crushed coal rock using independently developed test equipment for solving the problem of sampling of crushed coal rocks have been carried out. The application of uniaxial compression was used to approximately simulate the ground stress in real engineering. In combination with the analysis of crack evolution and failure modes for the grouted specimens, the influences of different crushed degrees of coal rock (CDCR) and solidified grout strength (SGS) on the mechanical behavior of grouted specimens under uniaxial compression were investigated. The research demonstrated that first, the UCS of grouted specimens decreased with the decrease in the CDCR at constant SGS (except for the SGS of 12.3 MPa). However, the UCS of grouted specimens for constant CDCR increased when the SGS increased; optimum solidification strengths for grouts between 19.3 and 23.0 MPa were obtained. The elastic moduli of the grouted specimens with different CDCR generally increased with increasing SGS, and the peak axial strain showed a slightly nonlinear decrease with increasing SGS. The supporting effect of the skeleton structure produced by the solidified grouts was increasingly obvious with increasing CDCR and SGS. The possible evolution of internal cracks for the grouted specimens was classified into three stages: (1) cracks initiating along the interfaces between the coal blocks and solidified grouts; (2) cracks initiating and propagating in coal blocks; and (3) cracks continually propagating successively in the interfaces, the coal blocks, and the solidified grouts near the coal blocks. Finally, after the propagation and coalescence of internal cracks through the entire specimens, there were two main failure modes for the failed grouted specimens. These modes included the inclined shear failure occurring in the more crushed coal rock and the splitting failure occurring in the less crushed coal rock. Both modes were different from the single failure mode along the fissure for the fractured coal rock after grouting solidification. However, compared to the brittle failure of intact coal rock, grouting into the different crushed degree coal rocks resulted in ductile deformation after the peak strength for the grouted specimens was attained.
