This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior and temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity of steel sheet for an auto-body. In order to Identify the temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity of SPRC35R and SPRC45E, uniaxial tension tests are performed with the variation of the strain rates from 0.001/sec to 200/sec, and the variation of environmental temperatures from $-40^{\circ}C\;to\;200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained with the static tensile test and at the intermediate strain rate is from the high speed tensile test. The experimental results show that the strain rate sensitivity increases at low temperature and it decreases at high temperature. It means that as the strain rate getting increasing, the variation of flow stress is more sensitive on the temperature. The results also indicates that the material properties of SPRC35R is more depend on the changes of strain rates and temperature than those of SPRC45E.

Fatigue damage of 2.2Ni-1Cr-0.5Mo steel used fir high strength pressure tubes and vessels was evaluated using uniaxial specimens subjected to strain-controlled fatigue loading. Based on the fatigue test results from different strain ratios of -2. -i 0, 0.5, 0.75, the fatigue damage of the steel was represented by using a cyclic strain energy density. Mean stress relaxation depended on the magnitude of the applied strain amplitude. The high pressure vessel steel exhibited the cyclic softening behavior. Total strain energy density consisting of the plastic strain energy density and the elastic tensile strain energy density described fairly well the fatigue life of the steel, taking the mean stress effects into account. Compared to other fatigue damage parameters, fatigue life prediction by the cyclic strain energy density showed a good correlation with the experimental fatigue lift within a factor of 3.
Strain-based criteria are known as a direct method in determining the stability of the geomechanical structures. In spite of the widely use of Sakurai critical strain criterion, it is so conservative to make use of them in rocks with initial plastic deformation on account of the considerable difference between the failure and critical strains. In this study, a new criterion has been developed on the basis of the failure strain to attain more reasonable results in determining the stability status of the tunnels excavated in the rocks mostly characterized by plastic-elastic/plastic behavior. Firstly, the stress-strain curve was obtained having conducted uniaxial compression strength tests on 91 samples of eight rock types. Then, the initial plastic deformation was omitted making use of axis translation technique and the criterion was presented allowing for the modified secant modulus and by use of the failure strain. The results depicted that the use of failure strain criterion in such rocks not only decreases the conservativeness of the critical strain criterion up to 42%, but also it determines the stability status of the tunnel more accurately.

This paper is concerned with the thermo-mechanical behavior of steel sheet for an auto-body including temperature dependent strain rate sensitivity. In order to identify the temperature-dependent strain rate sensitivity of SPRC35R, SPRC45E and TRIP60, uniaxial tensile tests are performed with the variation of the strain rates from 0.001/sec to 200/sec and the variation of environmental temperatures from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$. The thermo-mechanical response at the quasi-static state is obtained from the static tensile test and that at the intermediate strain rate is obtained from the high speed tensile test. Experimental results show that the variation of the flow stress and fracture elongation becomes sensitive to the temperature as the strain rate increases. It is observed that the dynamic strain aging occurs with TRIP60 at the temperature above $150^{\circ}C$. Results also indicate that the flow stress and tincture elongation of SPRC35R are more dependent on the changes of strain rates and temperature than those of SPRC45E and TRIP60.

In this study, measurements were conducted by image processing to do an in-depth evaluation of strain of rebar in a uniaxial tension test. The distribution of strain and the necking region were evaluated. The image processing is used to analyze the color information of a colored image, so that the parts consistent with desired targets can be distinguished from the other parts. After this process, the image was converted to a binary one. Centroids of each target region are obtained in the binary images. After repeating such process on the images from starting point to the finishing point of the test, elongation between targets is calculated based on the centroid of each target. The tensile test were conducted on grade 60 #7(D22) and #9(D29) rebars fabricated in accordance with ASTM A615 standards. Strain results from image processing were compared to the results from a conventional strain gauge, in order to see the validity of the image processing. With the image processing, the measuring was possible in not only the initial elastic region but also the necking region of more than 0.5(50%) strain. The image processing can remove the measuring limits as long as the targets can be video recorded. It also can measure strain at various spots because the targets can easily be attached and detached. Thus it is concluded that the image processing helps overcome limits in strain measuring and will be used in various ways.

External confinement by CFS (Carbon Fiber Sheet) is a very effective retrofit method for the reinforced concrete columns subject to either static or seismic loads. For the reliable and cost-effective design of CFS, an accurate stress-strain model is required for CFS-confined concrete. In this paper, uniaxial compression test on short RC column with square section was performed. To evaluate the effect of confinement on the stress-strain relationship of CFS-confined concrete, CFS area ratio and tie area ratio are considered. Based on the experimental results, a stress-strain model is proposed for concrete confined by CFS wraps. In the development of the model, the method to compute the actual hoop strains in CFS jackets at the rupture was examined and resolved. Overall, the results of the model agree well with test data.

In this study, effect of recycled aggregates and polypropylene fibers on the response of conventionally reinforced concrete element subjected to tensile loading in terms of tension stiffening and strain development was experimentally investigated. For this purpose, concrete prisms of 100 × 100 mm cross section and 500 mm length having one central deformed steel re-bar were cast using fibrous and non-fibrous Recycled Aggregate Concrete (RAC) with varying percentages of recycled aggregates (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) and tested under uniaxial tensile load. For all fibrous RAC mixes, polypropylene fibers were used at constant dosage of 3.15 kg/㎥. Effect of recycled aggregates and fibers on the compressive strength of concrete was also explored in this study. Through studying tensile load versus global axial deformation of composite and strain development in concrete and steel, it was found that replacement of natural aggregates with recycled aggregates in concrete negatively affected the cracking load, tension stiffening and strain development, and this negative effect was observed to be increased with increasing contents of recycled aggregates in concrete. The results of this study showed that it was possible to minimize the negative effect of recycled aggregates in concrete by the addition of polypropylene fibers. Reinforced concrete element constructed using concrete containing 50% recycled aggregates and polypropylene fibers exhibited cracking behavior, tension stiffening and strain development response almost similar to that of concrete element constructed using natural aggregate concrete without fiber.

The finite element analysis (FEA) is a numerical technique to find solutions of field problems. A field problem is approximated by differential equations or integral expressions. In a finite element, the field quantity is allowed to have a simple spatial variation in terms of linear or polynomial functions. This paper represents a review and an accuracy-study of the finite element method comparing the FEA results with the exact solution. The exact solutions were calculated by solid mechanics and FEA using matrix stiffness method. For this study, simple bar and cantilever models were considered to evaluate four types of basic elements - constant strain triangle (CST), linear strain triangle (LST), bi-linear-rectangle(Q4),and quadratic-rectangle(Q8). The bar model was subjected to uniaxial loading whereas in case of the cantilever model moment loading was used. In the uniaxial loading case, all basic element results of the displacement and stress in x-direction agreed well with the exact solutions. In the moment loading case, the displacement in y-direction using LST and Q8 elements were acceptable compared to the exact solution, but CST and Q4 elements had to be improved by the mesh refinement.

An automatic mooring system for a ship consists of a vacuum suction pad and a mechanical part, enabling quick and safe mooring of a ship. In the development of a mooring system, the design of a vacuum suction pad is a key to secure enough mooring forces and achieve stable operation of a mooring system. In the vacuum suction pad, properly designing its rubber seal determines the performance of the suction pad. Therefore, it is necessary to appropriately design the rubber seal for maintaining a high-vacuum condition inside the pad as well as achieving its mechanical robustness for long-time use. Finite element analysis for the design of the rubber seal requires the use of an appropriate strain energy function model to accurately simulate mechanical behavior of the rubber seal material. In this study, we conducted simple uniaxial tensile testing of Chloroprene Rubber (CR) to explore the strain energy function model best-fitted to its experimentally measured engineering strain-stress curves depending on various temperature environments. This study elucidates the temperature-dependent mechanical behaviors of CR and will be foundational to design rubber seal for an automatic mooring system under various temperature conditions.
