In structural applications, brittle materials such as soda-lime glasses and ceramics are often subjected to multiaxial stress. Brittle materials with crack or damaged by foreign object impacts are abruptly fractured from cracks, because of their properities of very high strength and low fracture toughness. But in most cases, the residual strength has been derived from tests under uniaxial stress such as a 4-point bend test. The strengths under multiaxial stresses might be different from the strength. In comparable tests, the residual strength under biaxial stress state by the ball-on-ring test was greater than that under the uniaxial one by the 4-point bend test. In the case that crack having 90deg. to loading direction, the ratio of biaxial to uniaxial flexure strength was 1.12. At a different crack angle to loading direction when it was evaluated by the 4-point bend test, the residual strength was different and the ratio of 45deg. to 90deg. was 1.16.
The stress corrosion index of Kumamoto andesite are evaluated by two types of testing method. One is the uniaxial compression test under various water vapor pressures, and the other is the double torsion (DT) test under a constant water vapor pressure. For the uniaxial compression tests, the uniaxial compressive strength increases linearly with decreasing water vapor pressure on the double logarithmic coordinates. As the results, the stress corrosion index obtained is estimated 44. On the other hand, in the DT test, the relaxation (RLX) test and the constant displacement rate (CDR) test were conducted. For the CDR test, as the displacement rate of loading point increases, the crack velocity increases. However, the fracture toughness is constant regardless of the change in displacement rate and the average fracture toughness is evaluated $2.07MN/m^{3/2}$. For the RLX test, the crack velocity-stress intensity factor curves are smooth and linear. The stress corrosion index estimated from the curves is 37. Comparing stress corrosion indexes in the uniaxial compression test and the DT test, there is no significant difference in these values, and they are considered to be in coincident each other regardless of testing methods. Therefore, it is concluded that stress corrosion is one of material constants of rock.

The relationship between the small-punch creep test and the conventional creep test was investigated experimentally using a method similar to that of the Monkman-Grant relationship. Uniaxial and small-punch creep rupture tests were carried out on 9Cr-2W ferritic steel (Commercial Grade 92 steel: X10CrWMoVNb 9-2) at elevated temperatures. From the relation derived in the same manner as the Monkman-Grant relation, a correlation between the displacement rate in response to the small-punch creep test and the strain rate in the uniaxial creep test was found, and the creep life was calculated using this relation. Furthermore, the failure modes of the small punch creep test specimens were investigated to show that the fracture was caused by creep.
In this study, Class II behavior of rock failure process under uniaxial and biaxial compression has been numerically simulated using bonded particle model. Class II behavior of rock was simulated by radial strain controlled uniaxial and biaxial compression tests using a suggested method of ISRM. Micro-parameters used in the simulation were determined based on the laboratory uniaxial compression tests carried out at ${\"{A}}sp{\"{o}}$ Hard Rock Laboratory, Sweden. Class II behavior of ${\"{A}}sp{\"{o}}$ rock was effectively simulated using newly proposed numerical technique in this study, and the results of numerical simulations show good similarity with the complete stress-strain curves for Class II behavior obtained from the laboratory tests.

This paper presents the results of an empirical study in which square rock-like blocks containing two parallel pre-existing rough non-persistent joints were subjected to uniaxial compression load. The main purpose of this study was to investigate uniaxial compressive strength and deformation modulus of jointed specimens. Response Surface Method (RSM) was utilized to design experiments and investigate the effect of four joint parameters, namely joint roughness coefficient (JRC), bridge length (L), bridge angle (${\gamma}$), and joint inclination (${\theta}$). The interaction of these parameters on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and deformation modulus of the blocks was investigated as well. The results indicated that an increase in joint roughness coefficient, bridge length and bridge angle increased compressive strength and deformation modulus. Moreover, increasing joint inclination decreased the two mechanical properties. The concept of 'interlocking cracks' which are mixed mode (shear-tensile cracks) was introduced. This type of cracks can happen in higher level of JRC. Initiation and propagation of this type of cracks reduces mechanical properties of sample before reaching its peak strength. The results of the Response Surface Methodology showed that the mutual interaction of the joint parameters had a significant influence on the compressive strength and deformation modulus.

The mechanical properties of REBCO coated conductor (CC) tapes under uniaxial tension are mainly determined by the thick layer Components like the substrate and the stabilizer. Depending on the applications of the CC tapes, it is also needed to externally reinforce thin metallic foils to one side or both sides of the CC tapes. This study investigated the effect of additional stabilizer layers or lamination on the electrical resistivity and electromechanical properties in RCE-DR processed GdBCO CC tapes with different structures. The strain/stress tolerance of Ic in differently processed 12 mm-wide REBCO CC tapes under uniaxial tension at 77 K and self-field could be determined by the loading-unloading scheme. As a result, Sn-Cu stabilized CC tape showed a significant decrease in mechanical properties due to its soft but thick stabilizing layer. However, similar electromechanical properties have been observed on both Sn-Cu and Sn-stabilized CC tapes, the Ic degradation behavior was independent of whether the CC tape has an external reinforcement or different stabilizing layers.
Little attention has been paid to Brazilian test for the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rocks as an indirect method despite high availability of civil engineering parameters. This paper employed Brazilian test value to estimate two parameters of igneous rocks (granite, andesite, rhyolite) of Korea. High reliability of Brazilian test has been supported by the conclusions drawn from point load test and Schmidt hammer strike values. It has also been found that this method can be applied easily and rapidly to the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rock cores when direct tests are not available.
Servo-motor driven uniaxial shake tables have been widely used for education and research purposes in earthquake engineering. These shake tables are mostly displacement-controlled by a digital proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller; however, accurate reproduction of acceleration time histories is not guaranteed. In this study, a control strategy is proposed and verified for uniaxial shake tables driven by a servo-motor. This strategy incorporates a deep-learning algorithm named Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network into a displacement PID feedback controller. The LSTM controller is trained by using a large number of experimental data of a self-made servo-motor driven uniaxial shake table. After the training is completed, the LSTM controller is implemented for directly generating the command voltage for the servo motor to drive the shake table. Meanwhile, a displacement PID controller is tuned and implemented close to the LSTM controller to prevent the shake table from permanent drift. The control strategy is named the LSTM-PID control scheme. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed LSTM-PID improves the acceleration tracking performance of the uniaxial shake table for both bare condition and loaded condition with a slender specimen.

In this paper, the effects of particle size and model scale of concrete has been investigated on the failure mechanism of PFC2D numerical models under uniaxial compressive test. For this purpose, rectangular models with same particle sizes and different model dimensions, i.e., $3mm{\times}6mm$, $6mm{\times}12mm$, $12mm{\times}24mm$, $25mm{\times}50mm$ and $54mm{\times}108mm$, were prepared. Also rectangular models with dimension of $54mm{\times}108mm$ and different particle sizes, i.e., 0.27 mm, 0.47 mm, 0.67 mm, 0.87 mm, 1.07 mm, 1.87 mm and 2.27 mm were simulated using PFC2D and tested under uniaxial compressive test. Concurrent with uniaxial test, direct shear test was performed on the numerical models. Dimension of the models were $75{\times}100mm$. Two narrow bands of particles with dimension of $37.5mm{\times}20mm$ were removed from upper and lower of the model to supply the shear test condition. The particle sizes in the models were 0.47 mm, 0.57 mm, 0.67 mm and 0.77 mm. The result shows that failure pattern was affected by model scale and particle size. The uniaxial compressive strength and shear strength were increased by increasing the model scale and particle size.

Uniaxial stress in ail axisymmetric body is the simplest example of ultrasonic stress measurement. However, the birefringence theory cannot be applied for axisymmetric solids because the axisymmetric stress field in the body does not make shy velocity difference in SH waves propagating in the axisymmetric direction. Conventional ultrasonic technique using the time-of-flight method also needs ultrasonic lengths of the unstressed and stressed body, which is very impractical. In this paper, the birefringence effect in axisymmetric solids under uniaxial stress is formulated to evaluate the axial stress inside the solid without measuring tile ultrasonic length. Theoretical derivation for the birefringence characteristics in the axisymmetric solids is made using the longitudinal and shear waves instead of two horizontally polarized shear waves. Tension test is conducted for carbon-steel specimen to measure the birefringence coefficient and investigate the validity of the theory. It is observed from experimental results that the velocity difference in two differently polarized acoustic waves is proportional to the uniaxial stress in the axisymmetric solid with a good agreement with the theoretical value.
