As there occurs recently and frequently a flash flood due to the climate change, a sudden local flood of great volume and short duration caused by heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time over a small area, it is increasing that significant danger and loss of life and property in Korea as well as the whole world. Since a flash flood usually occurs as the result of intense rainfall over small steep slope regions and has rapid runoff and debris flow, a flood rises quite quickly with little or no advance warning to prevent flood damage. The aim of this study is to quantify the severity of flash food by estimation of a flash flood index(FFI) from probability rainfall data in a study basin. FFI-D-F(FFI-Duration-Frequency) curves that present the relative severity of flash flood are developed for a study basin to provide regional basic information for the local flood forecasting and warning system particularly in ungauged catchments. It is also expected that FFI-D-F curves can be utilized for evaluation on flash flood mitigation ability and residual flood risk of both existing and planned flood control facilities.
Regionalization technique using flow duration curve and spatial interpolation algorithm is developed for the purpose of estimating daily flow time series at ungauged station. In this study, we assumed a part of 8 gauging stations of Nakdong River basin as ungauged stations. Then, we generated flow duration curves and daily flow hydrographs by regionalization technique at ungauged stations. And we compared generated and observed hydrographs. The simulation results showed that the observed flows were well simulated by the proposed method and that the general patterns of the observed flows were satisfactorily reproduced by the regionalization technique. From these results, it is possible that we obtain daily flow information without application of labour intensive and time consuming deterministic models, which require complicating quantification of model parameter values. And we compared the regionalization techniques with the specific discharge method which is the most general approach in hydrological practice in Korea. The results showed that the regionalization technique was superior to specific discharge method.method.
One of the most important factors for estimating a flood runoff from streams is the lag time. It is well known that the lag time is affected by the morphometric properties of basin which can be expressed by catchment shape descriptors. In this paper, the notion of the geometric characteristics of an equivalent ellipse proposed by Moussa(2003) was applied for calculating the lag time of geomorphologic instantaneous unit hydrograph(GIUH) at a basin outlet. The lag time was obtained from the observed data of rainfall and runoff by using the method of moments and the procedure based on geomorphology was used for GIUH. The relationships between the basin morphometric properties and the hydrological response were discussed based on application to 3 catchments in Korea. Additionally, the shapes of equivalent ellipse were examined how they are transformed from upstream area to downstream one. As a result, the relationship between the lag time and descriptors was shown to be close, and the shape of ellipse was presented to approach a circle along the river downwards. These results may be expanded to the estimation of hydrological response of ungauged catchment.
South Korea is a maritime nation, surrounded by water on three sides; hence, it is important to preserve in a sustainable manner. Most areas, especially those bordering the East Sea, have been suffering from severe coastal erosion. Information on the sediment yield of a river basin is an important requirement for water resources development and management. In Korea, data on suspended sediment yield are limited owing to a lack of logistic support for systematic sediment sampling activities. This paper presents an integrated approach to estimate the sediment yield for ungauged coastal basins by using a soil erosion model and a sediment delivery rate model in a geographic information system (GIS)-based platform. For applying the sediment yield model, a basin specific parameter was validated on the basis of field data, that, ranging from 0.6 to 1.2 for the 19 gauging stations. The calculated specific sediment yield ranged from 17 to $181t/km^2.yr$ in the various basin sizes of Korea. We obtained reasonable sediment yield values when comparing the measured data trends around the world with those in Korean basins.
Synthetic unit hydrograph equations for rainfall run-off characteristics analysis and estimation of design flood have long and quite frequently been presented, the Snyder and SCS synthetic unit hydrograph. The major inputs to the Snyder and SCS synthetic unit hydrograph are lag time and peak coefficient. In this study, the methods for estimating lag time and peak coefficient for small watersheds proposed by Zhao and McEnroe(1999) were applied to the Kum river basin in Korea. We investigated lag times of relatively small watersheds in the Kum river basin in Korea. For this investigation the recent rainfall and stream flow data for 10 relatively small watersheds with drainage areas ranging from 134 to 902 square kilometers were gathered and used. 250 flood flow events were identified along the way, and the lag time for the flood events was determined by using the rainfall and stream flow data. Lag time is closely related with the basin characteristics of a given drainage area such as channel length, channel slope, and drainage area. A regression analysis was conducted to relate lag time to the watershed characteristics. The resulting regression model is as shown below: ※ see full text (equations) In the model, Tlag is the lag time in hours, Lc is the length of the main river in kilometers and Se is the equivalent channel slope of the main channel. The coefficient of determinations (r$^2$)expressed in the regression equation is 0.846. The peak coefficient is not correlated significantly with any of the watershed characteristics. We recommend a peak coefficient of 0.60 as input to the Snyder unit-hydrograph model for the ungauged Kum river watersheds
In this study, Miho stream basin(Seokhwa water level gauging station) In Geum river, Flood control main station of Geum River Flood Control Office, is selected. Hydrologic topographical informations are calculated using WMS which is hydrologic analysis software coupled with GIS Method, and flood analysis is accomplished by HEC-1 included In WMS. To calculate the effective rainfall CN values of SCS are used. Clark, Snyder and SCS methods are selected respectively to derive unit hydrograph. This study shows the applicability of GIS techniques to runoff simulation in ungauged basin by comparing with actual measured flood hydrograph. As a results, Snyder(Tulsa) method and Clark (Herby) method is suitable to Miho stream basin. But Snyder(Tulsa) method is suitable more than Clark(Herby) method. And according to the degree of urbanization, the peak discharge has increased and the peak time has tended to decrease.

The aim of this study is to quantify the severity of flash food for a study watershed in Korea by estimation of flash food index using flood runoff hydrograph following Bhaskar et. al (2000). As an extension of the previous research, we examine the relation between flash food index and rainfall intensity, rainfall duration, and total runoff, respectively. This study has estimated the flash food index through simulated flood hydrographs to investigate the relative severity of flash flood in an ungauged basin, Megok river basin for 31 flood events.
The interest in hydrological modeling has increased significantly recently due to the necessity of watershed management, specifically in regards to lumped models, which are being prosperously utilized because of their relatively uncomplicated algorithms which require less simulation time. However, lumped models require empirical coefficients for hydrological analyses, which do not take into consideration the heterogeneity of site-specific characteristics. To overcome such obstacles, a distributed model was offered as an alternative and the number of researches related to watershed management and distributed models has been steadily increasing in the recent years. Thus, in this study, the feasibility of a grid-based rainfall-runoff model was reviewed using the flood runoff process in the Han River basin, including the ChungjuDam, HoengseongDam and SoyangDam watersheds. Hydrological parameters based on GIS/RS were extracted from basic GIS data such as DEM, land cover, soil map and rainfall depth. The accuracy of the runoff analysis for the model application was evaluated using EFF, NRMSE and QER. The calculation results showed that there was a good agreement with the observed data. Besides the ungauged spatial characteristics in the SoyangDam watershed, EFF showed a good result of 0.859.
The most of natural disasters that occur in North Korea are flood, typhoon and damage from heavy rain. The damage caused by those disasters since the mid-1990s is aggravating North Korea's economic difficulties every year. By recognizing the seriousness of the damages from the floods, the North Korean government has carried out the river maintenance, farmland restoration, land readjustment and afforestation projects since the last-1990s, but it has failed preventing the damages. In order to estimate the degree of flood risk regarding damage from chronic floods that occur inveterately in North Korea, this research conducted an additional simulation for rainfall-runoff analysis to reflect the characteristics of the ungauged area that make foreign countries hard to obtain the hydrological data and do not open the topographical data to public. In addition, this research estimates the degree of flood risk by selecting the factors of the hazard, exposure and vulnerability by following the standards of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Runoff Characteristics has been Analysis Using geomorphologic Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph(GIUH) and geomorphoclimatic unit hydrograph(GCUH) on an ungaged vary small basin about $5km^2$ scale in Kyungbuk gampo area. First, we estimated hydrology Factor using Geographic Information System(GIS) tool and then, calculated the characteristic velocity using the real rainfall-runoff data. It is compared with several velocities derived from GCUH theory and several other concentration time formulae. Kerby and Braby-Williams seems to be more applicable as characteristic velocity formula. Second, We compared the GCUH peak discharge with the probable flood, also compared the unit hydrograph as like the Clark, the Nakayasu and the S.C.S and GCUH with the observed discharge using the real rainfall events. The comparison results showed that GCUH could be applicable on an ungaged vary small basin. We expected that the result can be used as for estimation of a flash flood standard rainfall as well as emergency management plan.
