  • We sequenced the rbcL gene in more than 100 collections of foliose Bangiales made in the Aleutian Islands and western Alaska Peninsula during the past 25 years. This work allows us to recognize four previously undescribed species, two in the genus Boreophyllum and two in Pyropia. Boreophyllum aleuticum appears to be endemic to the Aleutian Islands, whereas B. ambiguum is known to occur from the Yakutat area to the tip of the Alaska Peninsula. The two previously undescribed species of Pyropia are more broadly distributed. Pyropia taeniata, which was previously identified under the name Py. pseudolinearis, occurs from northern Southeast Alaska through the Aleutian Islands. Pyropia unabbottiae, which is sister to Py. abbottiae, occurs from southern Vancouver Island to Attu Island. Collections throughout the Aleutian Islands allow us to document the distribution of another dozen species of foliose Bangiales in this region, including Boreophyllum aestivale, Fuscifolium tasa, Pyropia fallax, Py. fucicola, Py. gardneri, Py. kurogii, Py. nereocystis, Py. pseudolanceolata, Py. torta, Wildemania amplissima, W. norrisii, and W. variegata. We were unable to confirm the occurrence of the following species previously recorded from the Aleutian Islands: Porphya ochotensis, Pyropia abbottiae, Py. perforata, Py. pseudolinearis, P. purpurea, P. umbilicalis, Py. yezoensis and Wildemania schizophylla. At least two undescribed filamentous Bangiales also occur in the Aleutian Islands.

  • In this study, the occurrence and distribution of dictyostelid cellular slime molds was investigted from soils of typical forests in Mt. Nam and the effect of soil environmental factor on cellular slime molds was investigated. The fourteen species including two undescribed species were isolated as follows: Dictyostelium brefeldianum, Polysphondylium pallidum, P. violaceum, P. pseudo-candidum in Quercus mongolica-Sorbus alnifolia forests, D. purpureum, D. mucoroides var. stoloniferum, D. dimigraformum, D. brefeldiamum, P. pallidum, P. tenuissimum, P. violoceum, P. candidum, P. pseudo-candidum in Pinus densiflora forests, D. polycephahum, D. capitatum, d. brefeldianun, P. candidum in Robinia pseudo-acacia forests, D. purpureum, D. aureostipes var, aureostipes, D. polycephalum in Quercus acutissima forests, D. minutum, D. implicatum. in the site disturbed by human. The dominant species were P. pallidum, D. brefeldiamum, P. pseudo-candidum and D. dimigraformum were the undescribed species in Korea. Environmental factors such as soil pH, water content, organic content, total nitrogen and total phosphorus made a little effect on total species number, the number of clones.

  • Dictyostelid cellular slime molds were quantitatibly isolated from the soils of mt.halla (above 900m in altitude), korea, according to the 'clonal isolation technique(cavender and raper, 1965a)'. Total fifteen species were found, including 1 new and 6 undescribed species.these are dictyostelium mucorodes, dictostelium minutem, polysphondylium pallidum fasciculatum, polysphondylium violaceum, dictyostelium flavidum, dictyostelium fasciculatum, polysphondylium violaceum, dictyostelium flavidum sp. n.(HL-1),dictyostelium aureo-stipes var. aureo-stipes, dictyostelium capitatum, dictyostelium giganteum, dictyostelium polycephalum, dictyostelium brefeldianum, dictyostelium macrocephalum, and dictyostelium sphaerocephalum, dictyostelium sp. (HL-2), dictyostelium sp. (CJ-9). D. mucoroides was the dominant species, and D. minutam,p.pallidum, d. fasciculatum, and p. violaceum were relatively common. d. polycephalum, d. brefeldianum, d. macrocephalum, dictyostelium sp. (HL-3), and d. sphaerocephalum were very rare. Species diversity appeared to be the highest in the deciduous broad-leaved forest from the soils of which 14 species were isolated. eight species were, including five undescribed species, isolated only from this forest soils. Number of isolates severely decrease at the forests above 1,500m in altitude.

  • Ulleungdo is a volcanic island inhabited by a variety of animals and plants in an oceanic climate in the East Sea. The presence of filamentous fungi has been rarely reported in Ulleungdo. Thus, in this study some plants in the Nari basin and soils in the Dodong region were sampled. Fungi were isolated from the soil and identified by microscopical and molecular biological methods. Coniothyrium aleuritis, Hypocrea valdunensis, Pestalotiopsis uvicola and P. caudate were identified and found to be undescribed species in Korea.

  • Four species of ophichthid leptocephali were identified using 12S rDNA sequences, and their morphological descriptions were first provided based on six individuals (S1-S3,M1, and E1-E2) collected from the East Sea and the Korea Strait between September 2008 and October 2010. Mitochondrial 12S rDNA 859-861 base pairs of ophichthid leptocephali were compared with those of 16 ophichthids adult and 2 outgroups (Anguilla japonica and Conger myriaster). Leptocephali of S1 and E1 were very closely clustered with adult of Scolecenchelys borealis (D=0.002) and Echelus uropterus (D=0.000), respectively. However, leptocephali of S2-S3 andM1 were slightly far clustered with leptocephalus of S1 (D=0.006) and adult of Muraenichthys gymnopterus (0.034), respectively. We believe that S1 and E1 are S. borealis and E. uropterus, respectively, in which the former is unrecorded species in Korea. However, S2-S3 and M1 may be undescribed species belonging to genus Scolecenchelys and Muraenichthys, respectively, because total numbers of myomeres for S2-S3 (148-158) and M1 (151) were not consistent with total numbers of vertebrae or distribution for any adult of Scolecenchelys spp. and Muraenichthys spp. in the world. We propose the new Korean name 'Dong-hae-mul-baem' for S. borealis.
