  • Reduced-scale experimental study was carried out on the heat flow behavior which flows under the sloped ceiling in underground fire. Temperature and flow velocity were measured to characterize the ceiling jet along the sloped stairway ceiling. The methanol fuel was used as a model fire source giving 2.2 and 3.4 kW, with changing the slope angle of stairway adopting of 15, 25, 35, and 45 deg. Based on the experimental data, excess temperature and velocity along the sloped stairway ceiling were examined which are usefully applicable to estimate the activating conditions of heat detector and sprinkler head mounted on the sloped ceiling. Excess temperature in upper exit of the sloped stairway was also examined to analyze the soffit which delays the smoke diffusion. The result shows that the activating conditions of heat detector and sprinkler in the sloped stairway ceiling have to be considered differently in a point of about 30 deg.

  • The mechanical behavior of rock is essential to estimate the capacity and long-term stability of $CO_2$ storage in deep saline aquifers. As the depth of reservoir increases, the pressure and temperature that applied on the rock increase. To answer the question of how the confining pressure and temperature influence the mechanical behavior of reservoir rock, triaxial compression experiments were carried out on brine-saturated sandstone at elevated temperature. The triaxial compressive strength of brine-saturated sandstone was observed to decrease with increasing testing temperature, and the temperature weakening effect in strength enhanced with the increase of confining pressure. Sandstone specimens showed single fracture failures under triaxial compression. Three typical regions around the main fracture were identified: fracture band, damaged zone and undamaged zone. A function was proposed to describe the evolution of acoustic emission count under loading. Finally, the mechanism of elevated temperature causing the reduction of strength of brine-saturated sandstone was discussed.

  • This fundamental study analyzes the relationship between rock thermal properties and psychrometric properties in underground space and has a ultimate goal to develope technologies for predicting major environmental variables. The study is divided into 2 subjects (1) developement of a basic model for predicting temperature and humidity, (2) analysis of the validity of the model through application to a local underground storage space for military supplies. The basic model is built for the network of tunnel-shaped underground spaces. The model takes into account rock thermal properties and changes in moisture content in the air due to condensation/evaporation on the rock surface. Using lumped-parameter analytical method, heat flux from or to the surrounding rock is calculated and then the psychrometric properties(air quantity, pressure, temperature, humidity) are estimated through network simulation. The model can be utilized regardless of the tunnel type. The study site is a local storage space built in rock, mainly granite gneiss and quartz-porphyry. It is a U-shaped tunnel, 593.5m long and 6x6.5m wide. Relative humidity inside has to be strictly controlled under 55% to avoid erosion of a certain types of supplies stored in 6 chambers with the capacity of 300~1.000 ton. The thermal conductivity varies between 2.734 and 2.779W/m$^{\circ}C$ and the thermal diffusivity is in the range of 1.119 and $1.152{\times}10^{-6}\;m^2/s$ the specific heat between 910 and $920\;J/kg^{\circ}C$. Relative errors of the predicted values of dry/wet temperature and relative humidity are 0.8~3.0%, 0~7.5% and 0~7.0%, respectively. Apparent errors associated with the rock surface temperature seems to be partly due to the intrinsic limitations in the infrared thermometer used in this study.

  • Fire in underground space may induce severe structural damage as well as heavy casualties. To protect underground structure and passengers from fire, it is very essential to characterize fire-induced damage on construction materials of underground structures. In this study, the high-temperature furnace was manufactured to evaluate fire-induced damage on underground structure materials. Especially, this study aimed at the evaluation of fire-induced damage on the shield TBM concrete segment. In the fire tests, furnace temperature was set to reach 1,200 degrees at five minutes after Ignition. The temperature of 1,200 degrees was kept during one hour, and the fire was extinguished after two hours elapsed. From the temperature measurement by thermocouples embedded in test specimens, the spatting was estimated to reach approximately 20 cm from the surface exposed to fire. After the fire tests, the alteration of physico-mechanical properties and microstructures of concrete segment was investigated from core specimens. The results showed that apart from spatting, the deterioration depth of the remaining concrete material amounted to approximately 10 cm from the spatting surface.

  • This study was taken in general hospital, hotel, shopping center, underground cafe, school, house, for the purpose of investigating the distribution of indoor radon concentration in urban area, by E-PERM which approved U.S. EPA, between August and November 1999. There are two sampling Places were exceed 148 ㏃/㎥(4 pCi/L; U.S EPA remedial level), difference mean is 24.0㏃/㎥ when compared with underground vs. aboveground indoor radon concentration in the same building and ratio is 1.6, so underground area is higher than aboveground (p<0.05). Influencing factors were examined. They related to the location of sampler(detector) open or near the door is lower radon concentration than inside portion, which explains probably open area has better ventilated air and dilutes indoor radon concentration. Temperature has a negative relationship (p<0.05) with indoor radon concentration and relative humidity has a positive (p<0.05) Simultaneously to investigate water radon concentration, collected piped-water and the results were very low, which is the same in piped-water concentration other countries. In conclusion, underground indoor radon concentration is higher than aboveground. Concentration was related to sampling spot, open portion is lower than inside. Higher the temperature, lower the indoor radon concentrations. On the other hand higher the relative humidity, higher the indoor radon concentrations. Indoor radon concentration is influenced by sampling point, temperature, relative humidity.

  • Underground offers many advantages for storing agricultural and marine products. Since it is confined by thick walls of rock it is easy to control temperature and humidity and to achieve air and water tightness. Also, damages by rodents and insects could be avoided. Flexibility in choosing the location is another advantage that underground could offer. Consequently the goods could be stored near the big city to meet the demand change. Because of these advantages, many underground food storage facilities were built and operated successfully in U.S. and many Euroupean countries. On the other hand, there is no underground food storage facilities in Korea despite the need is growing rapidly. This paper describes the case studies of foreigh food storage and technologies related to food storage were analyzed and evaluated. Also performed is analysis of domestic technologies for construction and operation of underground food storage facilities to deduce the fields of studies that have to be conducted.

  • This is study of the planning of thermal insulation to prevent heat loss in a basement, is aimed at investigating the heat loss from the basement space and basement structures. The results analyzed in these researches are as follows; To analyze the heat loss from basement structures, this study experimented on the heat flow phenomenon of a non-insulation structure and two insulation structure models. From the result, the interior surface temperature of two insulation structures(B, C, model) showed an equal temperature, but the interior surface temperature of a non-insulation structure (A model) is different from the two models, Therefore, we understand that the insulator constructed in the basement structure makes a role of preventing the heat loss from the basement. In addition, the exterior surface temperature of two insulation structure models showed an equal temperature. Specially, judging from the temperature difference of C model. we understand that the performance of insulator is low under the definite depth of underground. The thermal insulation design should be constructed under the definite depth of underground considering outdoor and building conditions.

  • The purpose of this research is to characterize formaldehyde as trace toxic air pollutant in the underground spaces in Gyungnam province. Air samples of formaldehyde were taken in the three underground spaces for ten months from April 2003 to January 2004. The IAQ(Indoor Air Quality) of underground spaces were controled using central ventilation(supply/exhaust) system. The levels of GM of airborne formaldehyde concentrations in three sampling spaces were well below applicable standards, Korean Ministry of Environment, 0.1 ppm. However, some sample of airborne formaldehyde concentrations in underground spaces 'B' and 'C' were in excess of standard, due to the commercial products in shop, structural material, and the climate having high humidity and temperature. There are statistical differences in levels of formaldehyde by sampling spaces (p=0.086).
