  • The objective of this study is to develop the CAD system for 2 cell box culvert by ultimate strength design method. C-language & AutoCAD Rl2 were used to create user-friendly computing environment. Consequently, users can easily design 2 cell box culvert under the various conditions, such as design load, total fill depth, underground water level, strength of concrete, and so forth. This system is believed to improve the efficiency and economy by the batch processing of structural analysis, quick drafting and computation of material quantity in the 2 cell box culvert design.

  • An analytical study was conducted using the Galerkin technique to determine the behaviour of thin fibre-reinforced and laminated composite pipes under soil pressure. Geometric nonlinearity and material linearity have been assumed. We assumed that vertical and lateral soil pressure are proportional to the depth and lateral displacement of the pipe respectively. And we also assumed that radial shear stress is negligible because the ratio of the thickness to the radius of pipe is very small. We, in this paper, discuss the effect of the number of layer, fiber orientation, and soil property.

  • The design of high-depth and large-section tunnel facilities has been increased lately. The purpose of the design is to avoid inference of existing facilities, enhance public relations and reducing the size of the station, which is advantageous for effective use of underground spaces. Diverse downtown tunnel experience, advanced excavation equipment, reinforcement methods, monitoring technologies and numerical analysis made the design possible. This paper is to introduce the design of high-depth and large-section tunnel facilities via Gimpo airport area of Deagok-Sosa railway BTL project of double-tracking.

  • Linear cutting tests on granite were conducted to evaluated the cutting performance of abrasive water jet(AWJ) using several types of abrasives. The abrasives used in the tests were grarnet, alumimum oxide, and silicon carbide. And one type of granite which is comercially known as "KeuchangSuk" was used as workpiece throughout the tests. The results from the tests were described in terms of cutting depth and abrasive productivity. Authors tried to confirm the effects of the operational parameters of abrasive mass flow rate, water pressure, and traverse speed of nozzle on cutting depth and presented almost all the data obtained in the tests. Abrasive productivity can be defined as the area of kerf wall cut by unit weight of abrasive and is an important factor to evaluated the cutting ability of abrasive and assess the cost effectiveness of an AWJ system. In the tests the maximum abrasive productivities of garnet, alumina, and silicon carbide were about 0.21, 0.24, and 0.20 $\textrm{cm}^2$ respectively under similar operational conditions.onditions.

  • Variation of horizontal to vertical stress ratio of transversely isotropic rock caused by erosion was studied by numerical analysis. Influence of transversely isotropic was less than 5% for isotropic case. Difference between stresses obtained by numerical analysis and theoretical solution was small when initial stress ratio was small and the difference increased as erosion depth increased. Stress ratios diverged from initial ones as depth increased. An equation to determine stress ratio considering erosion according to the analyses was suggested.

  • Ground source heat pump system can achieve high efficiency of performance by utilizing annually constant underground temperature to provide heat source for space heating and cooling. Generally, the depth of constant-temperature zone under the ground depends on surface heat flux and soil properties. The deeper the ground heat exchanger is installed, the higher the heat exchange rate can be acquired. However, in order to optimally design the system, it is necessary to consider both the installation cost and the system performance. In this study, performance analysis of ground source heat pump system according to the depth has been conducted through the case study.

  • The magnitude and the orientation of in-situ stresses contribute to ground displacement and stresses in the field of underground space. This paper investigates in-situ stresses at various depth on the basis of 392 data which were determined by over-coring and hydro-fracturing test methods in the Korea peninsula. The result shows that in-situ stress distribution are more or less non-uniform through the Granite and Gneiss sub-area, and that the K-value in the Volcanic sub-area are below 1 at the deep depth. Also, the result of three dimensional numerical analyses of tunnel shows that the direction and magnitude of displacement around tunnel are much effected by the stress difference between the maximum and the minimum horizontal stress.

Complex analysis of rock cutting with consideration of rock-tool interaction using distinct element method (DEM)

  • Cutting of rocks is very common encountered in tunneling and mining during underground excavations. A deep understanding of rock-tool interaction can promote industrial applications significantly. In this paper, a distinct element method based approach, PFC3D, is adopted to simulate the rock cutting under different operation conditions (cutting velocity, depth of cut and rake angle) and with various tool geometries (tip angle, tip wear and tip shape). Simulation results showed that the cutting force and accumulated number of cracks increase with increasing cutting velocity, cut depth, tip angle and pick abrasion. The number of cracks and cutting force decrease with increasing negative rake angle and increase with increasing positive rake angle. The numerical approach can offer a better insight into the rock-tool interaction during the rock cutting process. The proposed numerical method can be used to assess the rock cuttability, to estimate the cutting performance, and to design the cutter head.

  • This paper presents some important issues in modeling rock behaviour around an underground opening at depth which characterized as stress-induced fractural failure of rock. Unlike other conventional modeling approaches, stress-induced rock failure is highly complex process due to its own heterogeneous and discrete natures. Because of this complexity, many researchers has been struggled to mimic such processes as close as possible to reality with various approaches in both analytical, and numerical approaches for past few decades. Such approaches which are based on continuum mechanics, analytical fracture mechanics, and DEM(Discrete Element Method) were explored in this paper, and fundamental shortcomings for each approaches were illustrated here. In addition, DEM approach using $PFC^{2D}$(Particle Flow Code) was also implemented and illuminated in this paper and discuss the improvement and considerations for the future research.

A study on the slot cutting in granite by high speed water jet (초고압수에 의한 화강석절삭에 대한 연구)

  • Water jet has been employed in extraacton of minerals for many years but the applications of low pressure jent s ar emodfined to some fields. With increasing strength of equipment it is possible to consider the use of high speed water jets for cutting hard rock. The high speed water jet technology is applied to various engineering fiels such as precessing rocks, quarrying rocks, mechanical fracturing as wel as rock excavation under the sea. For slot cutting in rocks with high speed water jets it is necessary to establish the empirical formula for estiamation of the cutting depth. The cutting depth is influenced by cutting parameters such as driving pressure, traverse speed, standoff distance, and shape and diameter of nozzel. Tests were carried out with a variety of cutting parameters on three types of granite. Nozzle pressures ranged from 1,200 to 2,800 bar, traverse speeds from 0.45 to 10.38 cm/min, standoff distances from 4.5 to 13.5 mm, and three types of nozzle diameter were used.
