We interpreted the seismic signal characteristics from crosswell seismic tomography in the underground cavity like abandoned mines. The first arrival time delay and amplitude attenuation showed clearly at the low velocity zone of cavity and fracture. Also ray density decreased by detour of raypath. As a result of the amplitude spectrum analysis of fresh rock and low velocity zone, there were no noticeable differences of the amplitude up to about 1000Hz frequency, but indicated that the one passed around cavity decreased about 7dB at 2000Hz, and 20dB at 3000Hz. It was possible to compare the signal characteristics between two media by extracting the signal data from the fresh rock zone and the underground cavity through the seismic crosswell tomography.

Comprehension of physical properties distribution of underground cavity must be made primarily to show the clear image of the state of the cavity. A physical scale model experiment is executed assuming that underground cavity in filled with air or water of different ratio. The state of cavity wall is considered wet. Cavity model is made of agar. As a experimental result, even if the cavity wall is wet, high air and water ratio cavity shows high anomaly.

When conducting the underground safety impact assessment under the special law in Korea, it is essential to investigate the occurrence of underground cavities. When underground cavities were discovered, the underground safety was assessed through numerical analysis. The previous study has suggested the stability evaluation based on the factor of safety by changing the 2D shape of the small underground cavity. In this study, the effects of small underground cavities considering 3D shapes were examined using a continuum analysis program and compared with the 2D results presented in previous study. If the 3-Dimensional shape of the underground cavity is found close to the sphere type, it would be reasonable to evaluate the factor of safety by the shear strength reduction method regardless of the size and position of the cavity. If a high-aspect ratio underground cavity with a depth of 2 m or more from the ground surface and an aspect ratio (a/b) of 2.0 or more is in the vertical direction, not only the factor of safety but the failure mode shape should be cautions in the stability evaluation using the shear strength reduction method. The results of this study are expected to be basic data on underground safety impact assessment.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the suitability of emergency underground cavity restoration method filling cavity with expansive material based on numerical analysis. For the numerical analysis, experiments were conducted to evaluate properties of expansive material. Based on the measured expansion pressure of the expansive material from the experiment, behavior of underground cavity restoration with various cavity dimensions (variation of height and width of rectangular-shape cavity) was numerically assessed. As a result of analysis, the vertical displacements of the top and bottom of cavity were significantly influenced by the cavity width and lateral displacements of cavity sides were highly dependent on cavity height. These vertical and lateral displacements were increased with increasing expansion pressure of expansive material. Also, when the expansion pressure was applied, the vertical displacement of the upper surface layer of the road was less dependent on cavity height, and was greatly influenced by cavity width.
Due to the rapid development of cities, densities and heights of urban structures are increased, and much larger and more underground spaces are being developed accordingly. Increasing development of underground spaces has induced more ground sinks and underground cavities. Therefore, safety of people is threatened by potential ground collapses and possible accidents, which may result from underground cavity. To actively respond against potential danger of ground sink, evaluation of existing cavity grade and development of recovery procedure are important. There exists the ground sinking management grade system of expressway developed as local standards in Japan. Recently, ground sinking management grade system of Seoul was developed with consideration of road and asphalt conditions. In this study, 209 underground cavities of ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ area were explored and their cavity shapes and grades were evaluated based on both ground sinking management grade systems of Japan and Seoul. Comparison is made between cavity grades evaluated based on both grading systems from Japan and Seoul. As a result of comparative analysis, the conservatively-estimated cavity grades requiring emergency restoration based on the Japanese management grade system of expressway result from neglection of layer thickness of surface pavement, considering only width and cover depth of a cavity.
The conventional representative underground cavity restoration methods, which are mainly open-cut methods, require high cost and long period of time for the restoration. Therefore, various trenchless restoration methods have been proposed to improve these disadvantages. The underground cavity restoration method using the expansive material proposed in this paper is one of the trenchless methods. This method fills the underground cavity with high quality backfill soils through the small hole(s) at asphalt layer and compacts backfill soils by insertion of the expansive material within the cavity. In this study, the restoration method using expansive material was constructed in acrylic chamber. The restoration efficiency of the method was analyzed by the fill ratio and degree of relative compaction according to the location and number of bore holes. As a result of the experiment, the restoration efficiency and the optimum construction location were found to be irrelevant.
In densely populated urban areas with a large amount of infrastructure, ground subsidence events can result in massive casualties and economic losses. In South Korea, the incidence of ground subsidence in urban areas has increased in recent years and the number of underground cavities suspected of causing such events has significantly increased. Therefore, it is essential to develop techniques to prevent the occurrence of underground and ground subsidence. In this study, a field test, laboratory test, and numerical analysis were conducted to determine the optimal compaction degree of the upper support layer of any underground cavity below the level of sewer pipes in order to prevent such cavities from collapsing and leading to ground subsidence accidents. During the field test, an underground cavity was simulated using ice, and the generation of the cavity was confirmed using ground penetrating radar. The ground investigation was performed using a cone penetration test, and the compaction of the ground where ground subsidence occurred was evaluated with a laboratory test. The behaviour of the ground under various conditions was predicted using a numerical analysis based on the data obtained from the field test and previous studies. Based on these results, the optimal compaction degree of the ground required to prevent the underground cavity from causing ground subsidence was predicted and presented.

The major purpose of this study is to determine the dynamic behavior of soil-pile-structure interaction system considering the underground cavity. For the analysis, a numerical method fur ground response analysis using FE-BE coupling method is developed. The total system is divided into two parts so called far field and near field. The far field is modeled by boundary element formulation using the multi-layered dynamic fundamental solution that satisfied radiational condition of wave. And this is coupled with near field modeled by finite elements. For the verification of dynamic analysis in the frequency domain, both forced vibration analysis and free-field response analysis are performed. The behavior of soil non-linearity is considered using the equivalent linear approximation method. As a result, it is shown that the developed method can be an efficient numerical method to solve the seismic response analysis considering the underground cavity in 2D problem.
Recently many sinkholes have appeared in urban areas of Korea, threatening public safety. To predict the occurrence of sinkholes, it is necessary to investigate the existence of cavity under urban roads. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been recognized as an effective means for detecting underground cavity in urban areas. In order to improve the understanding of the governing physical processes associated with GPR wave propagation, and interpret underground cavity effectively, a theoretical approach using numerical modeling is required. We have developed an algorithm employing a three-dimensional (3D) staggered-grid finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. This approach allows us to model the full electromagnetic wavefield associated with GPR surveys. We examined the GPR response for a simple cavity model, and the modeling results showed that our 3D FDTD modeling algorithm is useful to assess the underground cavity under urban roads.

In this study, we conducted geophysical investigations for the organization of integrated geophysical methods to detect underground cavities of ground subsidence area at the field test site, located at Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun. We examined the applicability of geophysical methods such as electrical resistivity, electromagnetic, and microgravity to cavity detection with the aid of borehole survey results. Underground cavities are widely present within the limestone bedrock overlain by the alluvial deposits in the area of the test site where the ground subsidences have occurred in the past. The limestone cavities are mostly filled with groundwater and clays in the test site. Thus, cavities have low electrical resistivity and density compared to the surrounding host bedrock. The results of the study have shown that the zones of low resistivity and density correspond to the zones of the cavities identified in the boreholes at the site, and that the geophysical methods used are very effective to detect underground cavities. Furthermore, we could map the distribution of cavities more precisely with the test results incorporated from the various geophysical methods. It is also important to notice that the microgravity method is a very promising tool since it has rarely used for the cavity detection in korea. Beyond the investigation of underground cavities, the geophysical methods are required to provide useful information for the reinforcement design for the ground subsidence areas. It is, therefore, necessary to develop integrated geophysical technique incorporating different geophysical methods to precisely map underground cavities and image the subsurface of the ground subsidence areas.
