The objectives of this study were to determine whether older Americans would provide valid energy intake information using a 24-hr recall method and to determine which characteristics were predictive of under-report of energy intake. We conducted 24-hour recalls on 83 male and 105 female community-dwelling older adults(66-87y) in the USA to assess energy(EI) and nutrient intakes. Basal metabolic rate(BMR) was calculated from age-and gender-specific equations of Schofield. Under-reporting was defined a priori as EI : BMR<0.9. Subjects volunteered demographic information, underwent depression and cognition exams, and completed a Level II Nutrition Risk Screen. Differences between under- and adequate-reporters were assessed using t-tests for characteristics and macro-nutrient profile. Stepwise regression analyses were used to predict under-reporting status. Under-reporting of EI occurred in 34% of the sample. Neither geriatric depression scale(GDS) score, nor self-reported weight loss were related to under-reporting. On average, under-reporters had higher body mass indices. The most significant variables for the main effect to predict the ratio of energy intake to estimated basal metabolic rate(EI : BMRest) were BMI and age. Using a standard cut-off of 76% of the recommended dietary allowances for Americans, under-reporters were consistently more likely to be classified as having inadequate nutrient, as well as energy, intakes. Due to recent trends of the atypical plan shapes and the zoning construction in high-rise buildings, the building stability under construction is arising as an important issue for design and construction plan. To ensure the stability under construction, the differential column shortening and the lateral movements with unbalanced distributions of self-weight of structure members and the load flows before completion of member connections and lateral load resisting system should be checked by construction sequence analysis. This paper presents the scheme of zone-based construction sequence analysis, to check the stability of high-rise building under construction. This scheme is applied to the construction sequence analysis for real high-rise building under construction.
This study was to investigate the behavior related to health, food habits, food consumption pattern and nutrient intakes of female students who residing in dormitory(self cooking) according to BMI(Body Mass Index). This study was carried out by questionnaired on June, 2000. Three hundred nine students were answered. The results were as follows: 1. The means of height, weight and BMI were 162.37$\pm$4.36cm, 52.48$\pm$5.54kg and 19.89$\pm$1.89. Under 20 of BMI among students were 53.1% and 20-25 of BMI were 46.9% of students. 2. In the self recognition of body shape, 63.4% of under weight subjects answered that their weight were normal. 73.1% of normal weight regard themselves more obese than their actual body shape normally shows. 51.2% of under weight subjects had attempted to control their weight. This results suggest that their weight control attempts were unnecessary. 3. 81.4% of subjects were answered irregular meals regardless BMI. 89.6% of subjects skipped breakfast. The main reasons were due to lack of time or not to eat proper food. Under weight subjects had less snack than normal weight subjects did(p '||'&'||'lt; 0.05). Normal weight subjects had more bun and cake than under weight subjects(p '||'&'||'gt; 0.05). 4. The consumption of vegetables and fruits were low regardless BMI. Mean energy, protein, Fe, Vit A, B$_1$, B$_2$, niacin, Vit C were above 75% of RDA, except calcium, in subjects. This study suggest that a comprehensive nutrition education program is need for college student in dormitory to improve their eating habits about skipping meal and breakfast and to increase the consumption of vegetables and fruits.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a weight control program on anthropometric values, serum lipid profiles and nutrient intakes. The subjects of this study were 38 obese children (boy : 17, girl : 21) with obesity index over 120%. The weight control program for obese children included nutritional education (50 min) and exercise (50 min) for 10 weeks. The nutrition intakes of the children were surveyed before and after the weight control program by 24hr recall test. The BMI, R$\ddot{o}$hrer Index, Obesity Index, WHR (Waist - Hip ratio) and body fat(%) were significantly decreased after completion of the weight control program. The total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol of subjects were significantly increased after the weight control program. Distribution of serum lipid profiles was slightly changed. The energy intakes were significantly decreased (p < 0.001). from 1760.8 kcal to 1435.2 kcal. In addition, the intakes of P, Zn, retinol, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, vitamin E and niacin were significantly decreased. while intakes of vitamin C and folate were increased. Calcium and folic acid were upper 25% of subjects, under EAR(Estimated Average Requirements) intake before the weight control program. The distribution of energy intakes was significantly changed into positive status; fat percentage was decreased 26.3% to 22.1% (p < 0.01). Carbohydrate was increased 58.6% to 61.2% (p < 0.05). Meal distribution of energy intakes was changed; calorie percentage from lunch significantly increased from 32.2% to 38.3%. Calorie percentage from snack significantly decreased from 17.7% to 13.5%. In conclusion, weight control program for 10 weeks is effective in obesity index and nutrient intakes although serum lipid values were a little changed.
In order to clarify the effect of the unilateral pneumonectomy on the compensatory growth of the residual lung, liver and kidney, and serum electrophoresis pattern, right lung pneumonectomy was performed on rabbits under general anesthesia with pentobarbital sodium. On the fifth day after the surgery, the weight of the residual lung, liver and bilateral kidneys was measured and organ weight-body weight ratio was calculated. And in an attempt to know whether the cells in the liver and the kidney were proliferated by unilateral pneumonectomy, DNA content was determined. The quantity(g/100 ml) of serum protein was determined also and serum electrophoresis was performed on cellulose acetate membrane. The results obtained are summarized as following. The weight of the residual lung and lung weight-body weight ratio was significantly increased respectively. The weight of the liver and organ weight-body weight ratio were not changed but the DNA content of the liver and kidney tissue increased significantly, illustrating that unilateral pneumonectomy caused cellular hyperplasia in the liver and in the kidney as well as in the residual lung. The quantity(g/100 ml) of serum protein was significantly increased and in the analysis of the electrophoregram, there was significant difference between the normal and pneumonectomy group. Taken together, these results indicate that unilateral pneumonectomy caused the compensatory hyperplasia of the liver, the kidney and the residual lung as well as the change of electro-phoretic pattern. And it also suggests that a humoral factor, which proliferates the cells in the residual lung, the liver and the kidney, existed in the pneumonectomized rabbits.
This study determined the effect of light intensity and photoperiod on the dry cell weight and total amount of carotenoids in four isolates of purple non-sulfur bacteria obtained from shaded and exposed microhabitats of a mangrove ecosystem in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. The initial isolation of the bacteria was carried out using synthetic 112 medium under anaerobic conditions (2.5 klx) at $30{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. On the basis of colony appearance, cell morphology, gram staining, motility test, and 16S rRNA gene sequencing analyses, all four bacteria were identified as Afifella marina. One of the bacterial isolates, designated as Af. marina strain ME, which was extracted from an exposed mud habitat within the mangrove ecosystem, showed the highest yield in dry cell weight ($4.32{\pm}0.03g/l$) as well as total carotenoids ($0.783{\pm}0.002mg/g$ dry cell weight). These values were significantly higher than those for dry cell weight ($3.77{\pm}0.02g/l$) and total carotenoid content ($0.706{\pm}0.008mg/g$) produced by the isolates from shaded habitats. Further analysis of the effect of 10 levels of light intensity on the growth characteristics of Af. marina strain ME showed that the optimum production of dry cell weight and total carotenoids was achieved at different light intensities and incubation periods. The bacterium produced the highest dry cell weight of 4.98 g/l at 3 klx in 72 h incubation, but the carotenoid production of 0.783 mg/g was achieved at 2.5 klx in 48 h incubation. Subsequent analysis of the effect of photoperiod on the production of dry cell weight and total carotenoids at optimum light intensities (3 and 2.5 klx, respectively) revealed that 18 and 24 h were the optimum photoperiods for the production of dry cell weight and total carotenoids, respectively. The unique growth characteristics of the Af. marina strain ME can be exploited for biotechnology applications.
The purpose of this study was to compare the temperamental differences between the normal infants and low-birth-weight infants. The subjects of this study were 70 mothers with normal infants and 62 mothers with the low-birth-weight. Convenient sampling was done at three regions. The infant temperament scale developed by Pridham & others (1994) was used. Data were analyzed by SPSS WIN program. The results were as follows; 1) There was a significant difference in total temperament score between the low-birth-weight infants and normal infants. The scores of the low-birth-weight infants were significantly lower than those of normal infants in the subscales of amenability and persistence, activity, and reactivity. In adaptability, there was no significant difference between two groups. 2) In both groups, there were no significant difference by socio-economic status of parents, delivery type, and birth order. But, in the case of low-birth-weight infants, the temperament score of infants over 6 months was significantly higher than that of infants under 6 months. 3) In the correlation analysis among subscales of the temperament, amenability and persistence, activity, and reactivity showed the significant relationship. But adaptability showed significant correlation only with the amenability and persistence. In conclusion, temperament score of low-birth-weight infants were significantly lower than that of normal infants. It was suggested that parenting education for low-birth-weight infants would be needed to understand and impact the positive infant temperament.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors associated with health and diet by nutritional status. The subjects were the children aged 2 to 6. Physicians and nurses measured children's anthropometries and examined their blood and urine. Interviewers questioned children's food habits to their mothers. 24 hour recall was done for children with their mother. The nutritional status was classified to 'underweight', 'normal weight' and 'overweight' by weight for height(median±1 S.D.) of the reference population. The number of subjects in each group(under, normal, over) was 25, 130 and 49. Factors including anthropometry and hemoglobin concentration were not significantly dif ferent by the nutritional status. The birth weight of children was correlated positively to mothers' BMI. Z scores of weight for height were related to the birth weight positively by the analysis of variance. The children of the underweight group used nutritional supplements more frequently than those of normal and overweight group. The nutrient intakes of normal weight group were higher than those of low and overweight group. Particularly, the intakes of energy, carbohydrate and calcium were significantly high among the groups. In terms of number of foods, food groups and dishes consumed per day, the children of the normal weight group ate more diversely than other groups but the differences were not significant. In conclusion, the children of normal weight group had similar characteristics with other groups but had more desirable dietary intakes than other groups in this study. Because the diet of children may be different by the nutritional status, nutrition education for children should be conducted according to the characteristics of each group's diet.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to show the effects of voluntary change of weight bearing on the vastus medialis oblique and the vastus lateralis ratio during squat exercise. Methods: Twenty-four healthy adults were recruited for this study. The subjects performed squat exercise with median weight bearing, lateral weight bearing and non-changed weight bearing. The muscle activities of the vastus medialis oblique and the vastus lateralis were measured during the squat for all three conditions. The measured data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA to investigate the effect of muscle activation on the each condition. The statistical analyses were performed using SPSS ver. 17.0, and a p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant for all cases. A post-hoc test was performed using Tukey's test. Results: The study showed that the vastus medialis oblique and the vastus lateralis ratio significantly changed according to the voluntary change of weight bearing during a squat. The vastus medialis oblique and the vastus lateralis ratio significantly decreased under the condition of voluntary lateral weight bearing. Conclusion: We suggest squat exercise on median weight bearing to increase the vastus medialis oblique and the vastus lateralis ratio. If your patient has.
Three rice varietis, Dongjinbyeo, Daecheongbyeo and Chucheongbyeo, which are leading cultivars in the Chungnam area, were planted to determine their effects of mixture on the plant characteristics and the blast occurrence. The summary obtained is as follows; 1. The heading dates of each cultivars were not affected by the mixing culture. Only a day was delayed in heading date of Chucheongbyeo under commonly standard fertilizer level. 2. The effects of cultivar mixture on the plant height was high when low level of fertilizer were applied. Of the cultivar mixture, the mixing of Dongjinbyeo and Daecheongbyeo shoed 5.1% of plant height increase. The effects of mixture on the tillering number were apparent only under the standard fertilizer level. The mixture of Dongjinbyeo and Chucheongbyeo was effective in increasing the tillering number up to 5.7% over mean tillering number of each cultivars. 3. The stem height tended to increase as the fertilizer level increased and the effects of cultivar mixture on the stem height was high. The stem height of mixture of Dongjinbyeo and Daecheongbyeo was highest compared with other mixture cropping. On the contrary, the panicle length was shortened as the fertilizer level decreased and cultivars were mixed. Among the cultivar mixtures, the mixture of Dongjinbyeo and Daecheongbyeo showed the most effectives of increasing the panicle length. 4. The total dry weight of mixed and pure cultivars were compared. The mixture of two cultivars was effective in increasing the dry weight of rice upto 3.5% over the average of dry weight of each cultivars. When three cultivars were mixed, there were 8.5% of dry weight increase over not mixed cultivars. The effects of mixture on the dry weight were more apparent under standard fertilizer level. 5. The rates of Neck and Node and Branch Blast occurrence were reduced when cultivars were mixed, and their reduction rates were 11.7% and 14.0%, respectively. The occurrence of Blasts was also decreased under the lowest fertilizer level than the standard fertilizer level. The least Blast occurrence was obtained when Dongjinbyeo and Daecheongbyeo were mixed cropped. 6. Significantly high number of spikelets of per square meter was observed when Chucheongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo were mixed. However, the spikelets of panicle were the lowest when Chucheongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo were mixed. The number of panicles per square meter was increased as the fertilizer levels increased, while the number of spikelets per panicle increased as the fertilizer level decreased. 7. The effects of mixture on the maturing were apparent regardless of the fertilizer level. The 1000 grain weight was higher when lower level of fertilizer was applied. The effects of cultivar mixture on the 1000 grain weight were more apparent in the plots of Chucheongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo mixture and three cultivar mixture. 8. The grain yield increased when cultivars mixed. The increment under mixing cropping was 4.6% over mono cropping. The effects of cultivar mixture on the yield increase were more apparent under lower levels of fertilizer application. The highest yield increase was obtained when Chucheongbyeo and Daecheongbyeo were mixed, and the rate of yield increase was 6.8% over mono-cropping. 9. The grain yield was highly correlated with number of panicles per square meter and dry weight. There was not any significant relationships found among grain yield, spikelets of panicle and ripening percentage.
