  • Chemically-modified electrodes were fabricated and their electrocatalytic behaviors have been investigated. As a modifying layer, poly-[1-methyl-3-(pyrrol-1-ylmethyl) pyridinium] was electropolymerized onto Pt electrodes under constant current. The thickness of the polymer film was controlled by means of total charge consumed during the electropolymerization. SEM was used to measure the thickness. There was a linear relationship between the passed charge and the film thickness. Ferro/ferricyanide, used as an electron mediator in this study, was rapidly ion-exchanged into the polymer layer with its concentration of 1.2~1.3M. It was found that electrooxidation of ascorbic acid is catalyzed by incorporated ferri/ferrocyanide couple. Kinetic parameters for electrooxidation were determined by RDE experiments. The results indicate that the present system corresponds to ER+S case based on the Saveant theory. Improving methods have been proposed to be R+S case which is ideal for electrocatalysis.

  • In an effort to develop and implement an inertial balance with high performance, the response characteristics of a load cell, which are some of the critical parameters for optimal system design, were evaluated using a sample object of approximately 100 g under microgravity conditions. To this end, a 15-m drop-tower was used to produce microgravity conditions, and the response characteristics of the load cell were investigated in terms of the variations in the magnitude of the deceleration of the sample object, noting that the mass of a living animal should be determined in microgravity. An analysis of the ratio of the inertial forces clearly demonstrated that the average velocity of a load cell plate should be higher than 0.5 m/s to meet the design requirements.

  • In this paper, we have proposed a FCB detection algorithm for the GSM system which is european cellular standard. The detection algorithm can be implemented using received signal sampler, correlator, and post detection combiner. GSM mobile phone can use the proposed algorithm for detection of the Broadcasting Channel, and to obtain the initial timing estimate. The proposed algorithm has a architecture which is suitable for DSP or ASIC implementation, and required memory size is small. The performance of the algorithm is a function of the processing data window size and the threshold values. Proper window size and the threshold values can be determined by analyzing the correlator and combiner. The proposed algorithm has been implemented using DSP, and the performance was verified using baseband simulation. The simulation assumed frequency offset values of 0ppm and 15ppm with the receiver filter bandwidth set at both minimum and maximum. It is shown that the algorithm is robust under various assumptions, and suitable for real implementations.

  • This study was undertaken to develop a stable self-microemulsifying drug delivery system (SMEDDS) for trans-cinnamaldehyde, a known antibacterial and antifungal agent. A simultaneous analytical method was established for quantification of trans-cinnamaldehyde and its degradant, cinnamic acid. Various surfactants were applied to assess their effect on the aqueous solubility of trans-cinnamaldehyde, and pseudo-ternary phase diagrams were plotted. Of the various formulations tested, the liquid SMEDDS composed of trans-cinnamaldehyde (oil), Cremophor EL (surfactant) and Transcutol P (cosurfactant) at a volume ratio of 10/70/20, produced the smallest emulsion droplet size (around 23 nm). The stability test determined the superior stability of the trans-cinnamaldehyde SMEDDS with constant trans-cinnamaldehyde content and z-average diameter of emulsion, under accelerated and heat stressed condition. Thus, we believe that this novel trans-cinnamaldehyde SMEDDS formulation has the potential to be applied for the development of trans-cinnamaldehyde medicines in the pharmaceutical industry.

However, domestic vehicle emissions test temperature of $20{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ is it does not reflect this situation the actual test temperature to accurately measure the exhaust gas volume of the vehicle is difficult. In this study, domestic automobile exhaust gas test conditions of a test temperature $20{\sim}30^{\circ}C$ various temperatures, including (35, 25, 0, -7, -15, $-25^{\circ}C$) under the two vehicles (2.0L MPI, 2.4 L GDI) as was discussed with respect to the exhaust gas characteristics of the vehicle according to the ambient temperature gas. As a result, domestic emissions test temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ than average conditions were temperature decreases greenhouse gas emissions and increase overall increased by up to 15 times higher.   • An electrolytic oxidation process was applied to remove odorous compounds from non-point odor sources including wastewater pipelines and manholes. In this study, a distance between the anode and the cathode of the electrolytic process was varied as a system operating parameters, and its effects on odor removal efficiencies and reaction characteristics were investigated. Odor precursors such as sediment organic matters and reduced sulfur/nitrogen compounds were effectively oxidized in the electrolytic process, and a change in oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) indicated that an stringent anaerobic condition shifted to a mild anoxic condition rapidly. At an electrode distance of 1 cm and an applied voltage of 30 V, a system current was maintained at 1 A, and the current density was 23.1 $mA/cm^{2}$. Under the condition, the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide in gas phase was found to be 100%, and 93% of ammonium ion was removed from the liquid phase during the 120 minute operating period. Moreover, the sulfate ion (${SO_4}^{2-}$) concentration increased about three times from its initial value due to the active oxidation. As the specific power consumption (i.e., the energy input normalized by the effective volume) increased, the oxidation progressed rapidly, however, the oxidation rate was varied depending on target compounds. Consequently, a threshold power consumption for each odorous compound needs to be experimentally determined for an effective application of the electrolytic oxidation.

Estimation of Optimal Passenger Car Equivalents of TCS Vehicle Types for Expressway Travel Demand Models Using a Genetic Algorithm (고속도로 교통수요모형 구축을 위한 유전자 알고리즘 기반 TCS 차종별 최적 승용차환산계수 산정)

  • PURPOSES : The Toll Collection System (TCS) operated by the Korea Expressway Corporation provides accurate traffic counts between tollgates within the expressway network under the closed-type toll collection system. However, although origin-destination (OD) matrices for a travel demand model can be constructed using these traffic counts, these matrices cannot be directly applied because it is technically difficult to determine appropriate passenger car equivalent (PCE) values for the vehicle types used in TCS. Therefore, this study was initiated to systematically determine the appropriate PCE values of TCS vehicle types for the travel demand model. METHODS : To search for the appropriate PCE values of TCS vehicle types, a traffic demand model based on TCS-based OD matrices and the expressway network was developed. Using the traffic demand model and a genetic algorithm, the appropriate PCE values were optimized through an approach that minimizes errors between actual link counts and estimated link volumes. RESULTS : As a result of the optimization, the optimal PCE values of TCS vehicle types 1 and 5 were determined to be 1 and 3.7, respectively. Those of TCS vehicle types 2 through 4 are found in the manual for the preliminary feasibility study. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the given vehicle delay functions and network properties (i.e., speeds and capacities), the travel demand model with the optimized PCE values produced a MAPE value of 37.7%, RMSE value of 17124.14, and correlation coefficient of 0.9506. Conclusively, the optimized PCE values were revealed to produce estimates of expressway link volumes sufficiently close to actual link counts.

  • In this paper a numerical model and two analytical models in the hydraulically connected stream-aquifer system were analyzed to compare the induced infiltration rate curves derived from each model. And we also examined the effects of anisotropy of hydraulic conductivity and the direction of the ambient ground water flow on the quantification of the induced infiltration rate. The induced infiltration rate curve determined by models is very simple and useful for estimating the induced infiltration rate since it contains only four physical variables such as the induced infiltration rate, the pumping rate, the distance between the pumping well and the stream, and the ambient ground water flow rate. Under the conditions tested in this paper the induced infiltration rate curves resulted from the Wilson's analytical model and FEWA numerical model were in good agreement, and the anisotropic ratio of hydraulic conductivity was evaluated as a physical factor which influences the behaviour of the induced infiltration rate curve. The methods and results of the paper might Icad to improve the understanding of the induced infiltration phenomenon and can be applied to the planning and disign of pumping well and the optimal determination of the induced infiltration rate and pumping rate for water quality management of the water supply wells.

Impacts of post-mortem ageing prior to freezing on technological and oxidative properties of coarse ground lamb sausage in a model system

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of ageing time of lamb loins prior to freezing on technological characteristics and oxidation stability of coarse ground lamb loin sausage using in a model system. Methods: Lamb loins (M. longissimus lumborum, n = 25) were aged at $-1.5^{\circ}C$ for 0, 1, 2, 3, and 8 wk and then frozen for the remaining days (a total of 30 wk). The aged/frozen/thawed lamb loins were ground, and model sausages were formulated with 75% aged/frozen/thawed lamb loin, 25% water, 1.5% sodium chloride (NaCl) and 0.3% sodium tripolyphosphate. The pH and thaw/purge loss of aged/frozen/thawed lamb loins were evaluated, and protein functionality (protein solubility and emulsifying capacity), water-holding capacity and textural properties of model sausages were determined. Cooked model sausages were vacuum-packaged in a plastic bag and displayed under continuous fluorescent natural white light ($3^{\circ}C{\pm}1^{\circ}C$). Colour and lipid oxidation of the cooked model sausages were evaluated on 0 and 21 d of display storage. Results: Ageing prior to freezing had no impact on pH and purge/thaw loss of lamb loins and the colour of cooked sausages (p>0.05) made from the loins. Lamb loins aged for at least 3 wk prior to freezing numerically improved total and myofibrillar protein solubilities (p>0.05) and emulsion activity index (p = 0.009) of meat batter, but decreased cooking loss (p = 0.003) and lipid oxidation (p<0.05) of model sausages. Conclusion: This study suggests that post-mortem ageing of raw meat prior to freezing could improve water-holding capacity and lipid oxidative stability of sausage made from the meat.

  • In this work, biodegradable modified aliphatic polyester (MAP) in tetrafunctional epoxy (4EP) resin was investigated in terms of cure kinetics, thermal stabilities, rheological properties, and mechanical interfacial properties. DSC results of the blends show that the cure activation energies (E$\_$a/) were increased in 10 wt% of MAP compared with neat 4EP, due to the increasing intermolecular interaction between 4EP and MAP. The decomposed activation energies (E$\_$t/) derived from Coats-Redfern method, were increased within the 10∼30 wt% composition range of MAP contents, resulting from increasing the cross-linking density of the blend system. Rheological properties of the blend system were investigated under isothermal condition using a rheometer. Cross-linking activation energies (E$\_$c/) were determined from the Arrhenius equation based on gel time and curing temperature. As a result, the E$\_$c/ showed a similar behavior with E$\_$a/. The fracture toughness (K$\_$IC/) of the mechanical interfacial properties was discussed in semi-IPN behaviors of the casting specimen.
