  • Recent studies have revealed that Nitric oxide(NO) was one of the demonstration for the physiological regulator, endothelial derived relaxing factor(EDRF) and that NO was produced by ultraviolet irradiation in human. Thus, the present author have carried out a experimental study on the change of hematological, histological value of ultraviolet irradiation in sprague-dawley rats. The subjects were divided into four groups of ten rats each selected at random. There were 4 groups: 1. no irradiation control; 2. ultraviolet $75mJ/cm^2$ irradiation group; 3. ultraviolet $150mJ/cm^2$ irradiation group; 4. ultraviolet $225mJ/cm^2$ group. After a irradiation, hematological and histological tests were performed to observe erythrocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCH, MCHC, MCV, $O_2$ saturation, pH, $PO_2,\;PCO_2$ value and to observe histological changes. In hematological tests, erythrocyte, hemoglobin, hematocrit significantly increased in $75mJ/cm^2$ than control group and more $150mJ/cm^2$ ultraviolet irradiation group respectively. Also In blood gas tests, $PO_2$ significantly increased in $75mJ/cm^2$ and more $150mJ/cm^2$ group than control group. Whereas $PCO_2$ significantly decreased in $75mJ/cm^2$ and more $150mJ/cm^2$ group than control group (Duncan-Tukey test, P<0.05). In histological tests, control and $75mJ/cm^2$ group unchanged, but more $150mJ/cm^2$ group changed that it was cytolysis, cytotoxic effect, acanthosis, proliferation of keratinocyte, appearance of amorphous cell and pyknotic nucleus, production of sunburn cell. In conclusion, the present author results support the importance of the relation between NO effect and hematological, histological value by ultraviolet B irradiation.

  • Although many studies have been performed to elucidate the molecular consequences of ultraviolet irradiation, little is known about the effect of natural products. Ultraviolet irradiation is widely considered to be an environmental stress. Here we investigated the effect of 2',4',7-trihydroxyisoflavone on the regulation of MMP-1 and type 1 procollagen in Ultraviolet irradiation of cultured human dermal fibroblasts. Phytochemical investigation of the whole plants of Viola hondoensis led to the isolation of five flavonoids. The structures of these compounds were identified 2',4',5,7-tetrahydroxyisoflavone (1), 2',4',7-trihydroxyisoflavone (2), 4',7-dihydroxyflavone (3), isoorientin (4), and isovitexin (5) using spectroscopic analysis. Among these, 2',4',7-trihydroxyisoflavone reduced the expression of MMP-1 at the protein levels in a dose-dependent manner by ultraviolet irradiation. Taken together, our results suggest that 2',4',7-trihydroxyisoflavone an important role in the reduction of MMP-1 induction by ultraviolet irradiation.

  • Although many studies have been performed to elucidate the molecular consequences of ultraviolet irradiation, little is known about the effect of natural products. Ultraviolet irradiation is widely considered to be an environmental stress. Here we investigated the effect of 3,23-dihydroxy- 20(29)-lupen-27-oic acid on the regulation of MMP-1 and type 1 procollagen in Ultraviolet irradiation of cultured old age human dermal fibroblasts. 3, 23-dihydroxy-20(29)-lupen-27- oic acid was isolated from Tiarella polyphylla D. Don (Saxifragaceae). Among them, 3, 23- dihydroxy-20(29)-lupen-27-oic acid induced the regulation of Type 1- procollagen and reduced the regulation of MMP-1 at the protein levels in a dose-dependent manner by ultraviolet irradiation. Taken together, our results suggest that 3, 23-dihydroxy-20(29)-lupen-27-oic acid plays an important role in the induction of Type 1-procollagen and reduction of MMP-1 by ultraviolet irradiation in old age human dermal fibroblasts.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to analyze skin reactions induced by ultraviolet irradiation using digital imagery. Methods : We recruited 15 women and ultraviolet irradiation was applied to their lumbar area. (The degree of inflammatory reaction was set on the basis of the third erythema dose. Image analysis was divided by Photoshop CS (8 bit RGB scale and gray scale). Then, images were processes using Image Pro Plus 4.5 program analyzing R, G, B, chromatic red value, luminance value and gray value. Results : As a result of analyzing changes in RGB scale, there were statistically significant differences in R, G, and chromatic red values. As a result of analyzing changes in gray scale, there were statistically significant differences in gray value. Analysis of changes in B and luminance values showed that there was no statistically significant difference. Conclusion : This study found that ultraviolet irradiation had influence on RGB and gray scale. These results suggest that changes to digital images on skin reaction by ultraviolet irradiation are related to erythema. In particular, these changes are related to R and gray values.

  • In this paper, we developed the new non-rubbing liquid crystal (LC) alignment techniques in the cell with slanted non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on polyimide (PI) film. It is shown that the uniform alignment for nematic (N) LC is obtained by using slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface. We successfully obtained that the pretilt angle of NLC is generated about 3.3 degree in the cell with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation with 70 degree on PI surface, for the first time. It is considered that the pretilt angle generation in NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecular and the PI, which is broken the polymer by slanted non-polarized UV irradiation. Therefore, we concluded that the uniform LC alignment is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force due to photo depolymerization with slanted non-polarized UV light irradiation on PI surface.

  • In this study, we propose an antibacterial efficiency according to the direction of UV irradiation. In the experiment, we measured the effective irradiation angle of UVC using S.aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium, and the variation of the antibacterial region according to the distance according to the direction of ultraviolet irradiation. Also, as a method to increase the antibacterial efficiency during horizontal irradiation of ultraviolet rays, we tested reflecting leaking UVC. As a result, the angle of ultraviolet irradiation was measured smaller than the product description, and in the case of the antibacterial area according to the direction of ultraviolet irradiation, the distance from the sample was increased during vertical irradiation, and the antibacterial area was increased as the distance from the sample was closer during horizontal irradiation. In addition, it was confirmed that antibacterial efficiency can be increased by reflecting leaking UVC during horizontal irradiation of UVC.

  • Purpose: This study aims to examine the effects of pulsed ultrasound on skin inflammatory reaction induced by ultraviolet irradiation. Methods: Twenty subjects were selected for this study. Inflammatory reaction was induced by ultraviolet irradiation in two areas of the lumbar region of the subjects. Pulsed ultrasound (3 MHz) was applied to one of the two areas of inflammatory reaction at a pulse ratio of 1:4, intensity of $0.5W/cm^2$, once a day for 5 min, and pulsed ultrasound was not applied to the other area. Wound color (chromatic red), luminance (gray) and wound contraction (area) were measured using digital imaging processing method. Results: There was a significant difference in wound color (chromatic red) in the interaction between time and area. There was a significant difference in luminance in the interaction between time and area. There was a significant difference in wound contraction between the two areas. Conclusion: These results indicate that pulsed ultrasound increased the wound contraction rate and reduced the inflammatory reaction activity such as erythema induced by ultraviolet irradiation.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of ultraviolet blood irradiation on the blood when a low dose of ultraviolet (UV) C is directly irradiated to the blood in a diabetic rabbit model and to evaluate the effects on treatment for diabetes. This study results indicate that the reduced body weight is increased and blood glucose levels are significantly reduced after the UBI treatment is performed when compared to those prior to the UBI treatment. In addition, $HCO_3{^-}$ levels and blood pH were elevated and lowered, respectively. When the UBI treatment is performed in a diabetic rabbit model, in this result indicate that blood glucose levels are reduced.

  • ZnO thin films have wide application areas due to its versatile properties as transparent conductors, wide-bandgap n-type semiconductors, gas sensor materials, and etc. We have performed a systematic investigation on ultraviolet-assisted CVD (chemical vapor deposition) method. Ultraviolet irradiation during the deposition of ZnO causes chemical reduction on the growing surface; which results in the reduction of the deposition rate, increase in the surface roughness, and decrease of the electrical resistivity. These effects produce larger characteristic variation with various deposition conditions in terms of surface morphology and optical/electrical properties compared to normal CVD deposited ZnO thin films. This versatile controllability of ultraviolet-assisted CVD can provide a larger processing options in the fabrication of nano-structured materials and flexible device applications.
