Estimated Position of Sea-Surface Beacon Using DWT/UKF (DWT/UKF를 이용한 수면 BEACON의 위치추정)

  • A location estimation algorithm based on the sea-surface beacon is proposed in this paper. The beacon is utilized to provide ultrasonic signals to the underwater vehicles around the beacon to estimate precise position of underwater vehicles (ROV, AUV, Diver robot), which is named as USBL (Ultra Short Baseline) system. It utilizes GPS and INS data for estimating its position and adopts DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) de-noising filter and UKF (Unscented KALMAN Filter) elaborating the position estimation. The beacon system aims at estimating the precise position of underwater vehicle by using USBL to receive the tracking signals. The most important one for the precise position estimation of underwater vehicle is estimating the position of the beacon system precisely. Since the beacon is on the sea-waves, the received GPS signals are noisy and unstable most of times. Therefore, the INS data (gyroscope sensor, accelerometer, magnetic compass) are obtained at the beacon on the sea-surface to compensate for the inaccuracy of the GPS data. The noises in the acceleration data from INS data are reduced by using DWT de-noising filter in this research. Finally the UKF localization system is proposed in this paper and the system performance is verified by real experiments.

Feasibility of MFC (Macro-Fiber Composite) Transducers for Guided Wave Technique

  • Since MFC(macro-fiber composite) transducer has been developed, many researchers have tried to apply this transducer on SHM(structural health monitoring), because it is so flexible and durable that it can be easily embedded to various kinds of structures. The objective of this paper is to figure out the benefits and feasibility of applying MFC transducers to guided wave technique. For this, we have experimentally tested the performance of MFC patches as transmitter and sensors for excitation and reception of guided waves on the thin aluminum alloy plate. In order to enhance the signal accuracy, we applied the FIR filter for noise reduction as well as used STFT(short-time Fourier transform) algorithm to image the guided wave characteristics clearly. From the results, the guided wave generated based on MFC showed good agreement with its theoretical dispersion curves. Moreover, the ultrasonic Lamb wave techniques based on MFC patches in pitch-catch manner was tested for detection of surface notch defects of which depths are 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% of the aluminum plate thickness. Results showed that the notch was detectable well when the notch depth was 10% of the thickness or greater.

Fully Non-Contact Assessment of Acoustic Nonlinearity According to Plastic Deformation in Al6061 Alloy (Al6061 합금의 소성변형에 따른 음향비선형 특성의 완전 비접촉식 평가)

  • This study proposes a fully non-contact measurement method to assess acoustic nonlinearity of narrowband surface waves generated by a line-arrayed laser beam by using a laser-ultrasonic detector in the way of two-wave mixing (TWM) method. This method was applied to figure out a relationship between plastic deformation and nonlinearity characteristics of a plastically deformed aluminum specimens. The experimental results showed that the acoustic nonlinearity of the laser-generated surface wave increased proportionally to the level of tensile deformation. This tendency is in good agreement with the result of measurement by contact method with PZT-transducer.

  • Time of flight diffraction(TOFD) method is used in nondestructive tests of piping and pressure vessels because of its advantages over a pulse echo technique: its speed, objectivity, repeatability and its insensitivity to specimen surface conditions and discontinuity orientation. But it is the one of weak points in TOFD method that it has the dead zone in sub-surface resolution induced by lateral waves. We solved the dead-zone problem near the sub-surface by using the deconvolution method and the developed ultrasonic testing system showed high performance.

  • It is possible to detect flaws in pipelines without interruption using all EMAT transducer because it is a non-contact transducer which can transmit ultrasonic waves into specimens without couplant. And it ran easily generate guided waves desired in each specific problem by altering the design of coil and magnet. In the present work, EMAT systems have been fabricated to generate surface waves, and selectively the plate wave of $A_1\;or\;S_1$ mode. The surface wave of 1.5MHz showed a good signal-to-noise ratio without distortion in its propagation along a pipeline, while the $S_1$ mode of 800kHz and the $A_1$ mode of 940kHz were distorted according to their dispersive properties. The wider the excitation pulse becomes, the better the mode selectivity of the plate waves becomes. A pipe of 256mm inner diameter and 5.5m thickness with 5 flaws was used for comparing the flaw detectability among the modes under consideration.

  • Occurrence of crack in the Half-loc of rubble mound breakwater under T.T.P (Tetrapod) can cause serious problems in structural safety. There, probing of such cracks in marine structures is an important process in evaluating the overall integrity of structures. Ultrasonic, SASW(Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves)and Impect-Echo methods were used for the inspection of pilot concrete and SFC (Steel Fiber Concrete) block in this study. The advantage and limitations of these methods for non-destructive inspection in concrete blocks are investigated. As a result, it has been verified that these methods proved to present effective solution for detecting the crack of the pilot concrete block.

  • In order to use PUR/CuO Composites as the sealing materials for ships equipment, this research has been performed. PUR/CuO composites are produced by using ultrasonic waves. The increase of CuO leads to increase in the tensile strength and shore hardness. The cumulative wear volume shows a tendency to increase in proportional to sliding distance. As the CuO particles of these composites indicated, the friction coefficient was slightly increased. The major failure mechanisms were lapping layers, deformation of matrix, plowing, debonding of particles and microcracking by scanning electric microscopy photograph of the wear tested surface.

Evaluation of Fatigue Damage of Metal Matrix Composite by LFB Acoustic Microscopy (Line-Focus-Beam 초음파 현미경을 이용한 금속복합재료의 피로손상에 관한 연구)

  • Composites composed of a precipitation harden 2124 alloy matrix reinforced by SiC whiskers, which are fabricated by powder metallugy, are suscepttible to fatigue damage due to the pile-up of moving dislocation and the microcrack initiation along SiC-Al interfaces, especially at the external surfaces of a body. The initial process, such as pile-up of dislocation or microcrack, that corresponds to the stage I during fatigue failure process are too small to be detected and characterized by conventional ultrasonic technique. This paper describes the applicability of an acoustic microscope with Line-Focus-Beam(LFB) lens of 225MHz to evaluate fatigue damage of SiC whiskers reinforced Al alloy. The specimens which were 6.6mm thick, 13mm wide, and 105mm long in the gage section were fatigued in tension-tension under load control. The velocity of leaky surface and leaky pseudosurface acoustic waves are obtained by FFT analysis technique from V(z) curve which is a record of output of piezoelectric transducer. These results are discussed with the change of number of fatigue cycles. The result obtained by acoustic microscope is compared with that by ultrasonic technique generated at 5MHz with conventional surface wave transducers.

A Study on Relative Wave Elevation Measurement of KSUPRAMAX-O in Regular Waves (KSUPRAMAX-O 선형의 규칙파 중 상대파고 계측에 대한 연구)

  • This study focuses on measuring the relative wave elevation around the KSUPRAMAX-O ship and comparing it with numerical analysis results (potential and computational fluid dynamics). The relative wave elevation is a good indicator of the pressure distribution on the ship's surface, which is affected by the ship's motion, incident waves, and distributed waves. Prior to measuring the relative wave elevation, a comparative test was conducted on resistance type, capacitance type, and ultrasonic type wave probe to measure the relative wave elevation, and it was confirmed that the resistance type wave probe was suitable for measuring the relative wave elevation. A model test was performed at low speed and design speed using resistance type wave probe and compared with the results of numerical analysis result. As for the motion response, it was confirmed that the result of experiments and the result of the numerical analysis were in good agreement. The relative wave elevation showed a similar trend between the experiment and the computational fluid dynamics, but the potential analysis result showed a difference from the experiment in design speed.

Nondestructive Evaluation of Nanostructured Thin Film System Using Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (초음파현미경을 이용한 나노 구조 박막 시스템의 비파괴평가)

  • In recent years, as nano scale structured thin film technology has emerged in various fields such as the materials, biomedical and acoustic sciences, the quantitative nondestructive adhesion evaluation of thin film interfaces using ultra high frequency scanning acoustic microscopy(SAM) has become an important issue in terms of the longevity and durability of thin film devices. In this study, an effective technique for investigating the interfaces of nano scale structured thin film systems is described, based on the focusing of ultrasonic waves, the generation of leaky surface acoustic waves(LSAWs), V(z) curve simulation and ultra high frequency acoustical imaging_ Computer simulations of the V(z) curve were performed to estimate the sensitivity of detection of micro flaws(i.e., delamination) in a thin film system. Finally, experiments were conducted to confirm that a SAM system operating at a frequency of 1 GHz can be useful to visualize the micro flaws in nano structured thin film systems.
