The role of quantitative nondestructive evaluation of defects is becoming more important to assure the reliability and the safety of structure, which can eventually be used for residual life evaluation of structure on the basis of fracture mechanics approach. Although ultrasonic technique is one of the most widely used techniques for application of practical field test among the various nondestructive evaluation technique, there are still some problems to be solved in effective extraction and classification of ultrasonic signal from their noisy ultrasonic waveforms. Therefore, crack size determination through a neural network based on the back-propagation algorithm using back-scattered ultrasonic signals is established in this study. For this purpose, aluminum plate containing vertical or inclined surface breaking crack with different crack length was used to receive the back-scattered ultrasonic signals by pulse echo method. Some features extracted from these signals and sizes of cracks were used to train neural network and the neural network's output of the crack size are compared with the true answer.

The partial discharge detecting method using the ultrasonic technique has been investigated to monitor the insulation ageing of a transformer. However, the result of the studies on the ultrasonic technique for detecting of partial discharge in the operating transformer is not enough yet to utilize. This paper presents the analysis of the ultrasonic signals due to the partial discharge in a model transformer and the corona in air at a shielded high voltage room. In addition, the ultrasonic signals due to the vibration from the core, operation of the cooling pump, the fan and the OLTC at the 345㎸ power transformer, were analyzed and corona noise from overhead transmission line in 345㎸ substation were measured to remove the electrical and mechanical noises from the transformer. Furthermore, ultrasonic signal due to the partial discharge in the 154㎸ power transformer with in $C_2$$H_2$ gas warning condition was measured. The inside of the transformer was examined with care. which confirms the existence of the partial discharge source.

In the present study, a Nd;YAG Laser (pulse type) was used to emit ultrasonic signals to a test material. In addition, a total ultrasonic investigation system was designed by adopting a Fabry-Perot interferometer, which receives ultrasonic signals without any contact. For non-destructive test SM45C, which contains some flaws was used as a test material. Because it is easy to align light beam in receiver, and the length of the light beam does not change much even if convex mirror leans towards one side, confocal Fabry-Perot interferometer, which has stable frequency, and PI control are used to correct interfered and unstable signals from temperature, fluctuation and time shift of laser frequency. Stable signals are always obtained by the feedback of PI circuit signals in the confocal Fabry-Perot interferometer. The type, size and position of flaws inside the test material were examined by achieving the stabilization of an interferometer. This study presented a useful method, which could quantitatively investigate the fault of objects by using a Fabry-Perot interferometer.

Flaw classification and sizing are very essential issues in quantitative ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of various materials and structures including weldments. For performing of these tasks in an automated fashion, we are developing an intelligent ultrasonic evaluation system with a multi-axis portable scanner which can do consistent and efficient acquisition and processing of ultrasonic flaw signals. Here we present our efforts to develop of this intelligent system including design of the portable scanner, acquisition and processing of ultrasonic flaw signals, display of pseudo 3-D image of flaws, and classification and sizing of flaws in weldments.
Recently, ultrasonic testing simulation has becomes very important in the field of nondestructive evaluation due to its unique capability of providing testing signals without real inspection. The ultrasonic testing simulation requires three elementary models including the transducer beam radiation model, the flaw scattering model, and the reception model. In the present work, we briefly describe an approach to develop the ultrasonic testing model together with its elementary models with the multi-gaussian beam model. Based on this approach, we developed ultrasonic testing simulation program with MATLAB. The performance of the developed program is demonstrated by the predicting of ultrasonic signals from two types of flaws, circulars crack and spheres.
This paper proposes a shift-register-based multichannel ultrasonic focusing delay control method using a complex programmable logic device (CPLD) for a high resolution of ultrasonic focusing system. The proposed method can achieve the ultrasonic focusing through the delay control of driving signals of each ultrasonic transducer of an ultrasonic array. The delay of the driving signals of all ultrasonic channels can be controlled by setting the shift register in the CPLD. The experiment verified that the frequency of the clock used for the delay control increased, the error of the focusing point decreased, and the diameter of the focusing point decreased as the length of the shift register in the proposed method. The proposed method used only one CPLD for ultrasonic focusing and did not require to use complex hardware circuits. Therefore, the resources required for the design of an ultrasonic focusing system could be reduced. The proposed method can be applied to the fields of human computer interaction (HCI), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).
This study proposes integrity evaluation method of weld zone in rails using high precision distance amplitude characteristics curve(DACC) and ultrasonic signals. For these purposes, the ultrasonic signals for defects(porosity and crack) of weld zone in rails are acquired in the type of time series data and echo strength. 6 lines in the DACC indicated damage evaluation standard of weld zone in rails. The aquired ultrasonic signals agree fairly well with the mesured results of reference block and sensitivity block(defect location, beam propagation distance, echo strength, etc). The proposed high precision DACC in this study can be used for integrity evaluation of weld zone in rails.
This study proposes integrity evaluation method of weld zone in titanium using titanium distance amplitude characteristics curve(TDACC) and ultrasonic signals. For these purposes, the ultrasonic signals for porosity defects of weld zone in titanium are acquired in the type of time series data and echo strength. 4 lines in the DACC indicated damage evaluation standard of weld zone in titanium. The acquired ultrasonic signals agree fairly well with the measured results of reference block and sensitivity block(defect location, bean1 propagation distance, echo strength, etc). The proposed TDACC in this study agree fairy well with the measured results of weld zone in titanium(weld defects as porosity). The proposed TDACC in this study can be used for integrity evaluation of weld zone in titanium.
This study proposes construction of through transmission for weld defects detection of rail weld zone from ultrasonic signals. For these purposes, the ultrasonic signals for defects(porosity and crack) of weld zone in rails are acquired in the type of time series data and echo strength. 6 lines in the distance amplitude characteristics curve(DACC) indicated damage evaluation standard of weld zone in rails. The acquired ultrasonic signals agree flirty well with the mesured results of reference block and sensitivity block(defect location beam propagation distance, echo strength, etc). The proposed construction of through transmission in this study can be used for weld defects detection of rail weld zone.

Ultrasonic inspection methods are widely used for detecting flaws in materials. The signal analysis step plays a crucial part in the data interpretation process. A number of signal processing methods have been proposed to classify ultrasonic flaw signals. One of the more popular methods involves the extraction of an appropriate set of features followed by the use of a neural network for the classification of the signals in the feature space. This paper describes an alternative approach which uses the least mean square (LMS) method and expectation maximization (EM) algorithm with the model based deconvolution which is employed for classifying nondestructive evaluation (NDE) signals from steam generator tubes in a nuclear power plant. The signals due to cracks and deposits are not significantly different. These signals must be discriminated to prevent from happening a huge disaster such as contamination of water or explosion. A model based deconvolution has been described to facilitate comparison of classification results. The method uses the space alternating generalized expectation maximization (SAGE) algorithm In conjunction with the Newton-Raphson method which uses the Hessian parameter resulting in fast convergence to estimate the time of flight and the distance between the tube wall and the ultrasonic sensor Results using these schemes for the classification of ultrasonic signals from cracks and deposits within steam generator tubes are presented and showed a reasonable performances.
