  • Nondestructive evaluation study was made on creep damage materials by ultrasonic spectrum analysis. The evaluation methods was developed in order to predict the change of ultrasonic attenuation with increasing creep damage. A new algorithm for the improvement of measuring accuracy of ultrasonic attenuation using a spectrum analysis has been developed. Normally, the ultrasonic attenuation is evaluated from 1st and 2nd peak values of the pulse-echo ultrasonic wave. The algorithm developed is incorporated in a measuring system which consists of a personal computer with ultrasonic apparatus and a digital storage oscilloscope. By the spectrum analysis method, it become popssible to describe approximately the attenuation change with increassing creep damage in Cr-Mo-V forging.

  • The ultrasonic method, which is well known as nondestructive test method, is widely used to evaluate the material damage due to degradation. However, this method is just used for measuring the crack size and the thickness loss of the tube. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability of the ultrasonic technique for the evaluation of marine diesel engine exhaust valve and to suggest the correlations between the ultrasonic characteristics and valve degradation. From the evaluation of the results obtained, the technique of using the ultrasonic property was founds to be a efficient method to evaluate the degree of marine diesel engine exhaust valve by nondestructive test.

  • A simulation program SIMULTSONIC is under development at CNDE to help determine and/or help optimize ultrasonic probe locations for inspection of complex components. SIMULTSONIC provides a ray-trace based assessment for immersion and contact modes of inspection. The code written in Visual C++ operating in Microsoft Windows environment provides an interactive user interface. In this paper, a description of the various features of SIMULTSONIC is given followed by examples illustrating the capability of SIMULTSONIC to deal with inspection of canonical objects such as pipes. In particular, the use of SIMULTSONIC in the inspection of very thin-walled pipes (with 450 urn wall thickness) is described. Ray trace based assessment was done using SIMULTSONIC to determine the standoff distance and the angle of oblique incidence for an immersion mode focused transducer. A 3-cycle Hanning window pulse was chosen for simulations. Experiments were carried out to validate the simulations. The A-scans and the associated B-Scan images obtained through simulations show good correlation with experimental results, both with the arrival time of the signal as well as with the signal amplitudes.

  • This study has been achieved on the characteristics of ultrasonic wave in 2.25Cr-1Mo steel to evaluate the feasibility of ultrasonic nondestructive technique on the assessment of aging degradation. The measured values were used find a relationship between the ultrasonic propagation properties and degradation such as coarsening of carbides and precipitates. The ultrasonic attenuation coefficient was mainly affected by the grain size of prior austenitic phase as well as degradation. In this results, degradation and grain size in 2.25Cr-1Mo steel was able to cope with the changes in ultrasonic wave properties by applying the nondestructive evaluation method

  • The pulse-echo method is one of the most widely used ultrasonic techniques for application of nondestructive evaluation. Particularly, quantitative nondestructive evaluation of defects has been considered more important to assure the reliability and the safety of structure. Frequency energy in adhesive joints is based on the ultrasonic wave analysis. The attenuation coefficient upon wave amplitude and the frequency energy that is expressed in the term of wave pressure amplitude were utilized for the primary wave experiment. By means of a control experiment, it was confirmed that the variation of the frequency energy in adhesive joints depends on transition by stress variation. In this paper, the ultrasonic characteristics were measured for single lap joint and Double Cantilever Beam specimen with different fracture modes that was subjected to stress. Consequently, the data that was obtained from the adhesive specimen was analytically compared to the fracture mechanics parameter

  • Since the degradation caused by corrosion is restricted to the surface of materials, conventional ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation methods based on ultrasonic bulk waves are not applicable to characterization of the corrosion degradation. To take care of this difficulty, a new nondestructive evaluation method that uses ultrasonic backward radiation has been proposed recently. This paper explores the potential of this newly developed method for nondestructive characterization and in-situ monitoring of corrosion degradation. Specifically, backward radiated ultrasounds from aged thermo-mechanically controlled process (TMCP) steel specimens by corrosion fatigue were measured and their characteristics were correlated to those of the aged specimens. The excellent correlation observed in the present study demonstrates the high potential of the backward radiated ultrasound as an effective tool for nondestructive characterization of corrosion degradation. In addition, the potential of the backward radiated ultrasound to in-situ monitoring of corrosion degradation is under current investigation.

  • In this study, ultrasonic transducers for non-destructive contact measurement of whole fruits were developed. The design parameters for ultrasonic transducer such as acoustical impedance of fruits, kinds of piezoelectric materials, ultrasonic wave frequency, and transducer diameter were investigated. In order to match the acoustical impedance between piezoelectric material and fruit, various materials were fabricated and evaluated. Also to control the sensitivity and bandwidth of the ultrasonic transducer, various backing materials were fabricated and evaluated. Especially, the wear plate of the ultrasonic transducer was designed and fabricated considering the curvature of fruit. The central frequencies of two developed ultrasonic transducers were about 100 kHz and 200 kHz, respectively. With the developed ultrasonic transducers, non-destructive evaluation of the fruit will be possible.
