In this paper, we suggested a CPW-fed UWB antenna with uni-planar sectoral structure. The area where radiation device face ground is designed to have the shape of tapered slot based on exponential function. We modified a rectangular bow-tie dipole structure antenna and thus formed a multi-resonant mode. From this, we expanded the impedance bandwidth and made a feature satisfying VSWR of less than 2 between $3.1\sim10.6GHz$. The test result showed that the return loss less than -10 dB was met in the full-band UWB system and maximum gain of $0.9\sim3.1dB$ was made with the half-power beamwidth of $40.1\sim89.9^{\circ}$ on XY plane(Theta, $Phi=90^{\circ}$) and the full band. By using CPW-fed structure with no ground on the back of the substrate, the suggested antenna is easy to design and its miniaturization is also possible.

In this paper, a new method for detecting breast cancer is proposed, which utilizes dielectric characteristics of pathological tissues and time delay of back scattered response, and its feasibility was investigated. We have developed a detection algorithm and verified it by numerical simulation and measurement for a prototype system. For a prototype system, we have fabricated experimental model(artificial breast with a cancer) and UWB(ultra-wideband) antenna. The results of the measurement simulation show an excellent detection capability of a cancer tissue. It is found that a good UWB antenna and a good calibration signal are key elements of such detection system. Further study is ongoing to develop a commercial system.

In this paper, design of a UWB MIMO antenna for an on-body application is proposed and antenna performance with body effect and the impact on the human body are investigated. The proposed MIMO antenna is composed of UWB antenna above ground plane and an additional plunger shaped isolator located between the two monopole antennas to enhance the isolation characteristic. The simulation and measurement are performed to analyze the effect of the human body on antenna performance when the human body is located in the near field of the antenna. According to the measurement results, the measured SAR values for antennas 1 and 2 are 0.132 W/kg and 0.08 W/kg, respectively when 0.5 mW input power is delivered. These values satisfy the FCC guideline which ragulates that the 1-g average SAR should be lower than 1.6 W/kg.

Modern electronic circuits are of importance for the function of communication, traffic systems and security systems. An intentional threat to these systems could be of big casualties and economic disasters. This study has examined susceptibility of electronic circuits inside the cavity by HPEM(High Power Electromagnetics). The UWB measurements were done at an anechoic chamber using a RADAN voltage source, which can generate a transient impulse of about 200 kV. The HPEM wave penetrated inside the metal case appeared to the long damped ringwave of pulse length compared with the incident wave. In addition, the resonant frequency generated inside the metal case occurred primarily in the range of 1~3 GHz. The frequency band of 1~3 GHz was influenced on the electronic circuit, which was confirmed by an external antenna and an internal absorber. The electronic circuit was influenced by HPEM infiltrated into the cavity at the 86 kV/m out of the metal cases. Also in case of an absorber the susceptibility of an electronic circuit was smallest among other cases(aperture, antenna). It is considered that absorber has a function absorbing electromagnetic wave infiltrated into the cavity and simultaneously limiting resonance by varying a boundary condition inside the cavity. Based on the results, electronic equipment systems could be applied to protection that has suited system requirements.

In this paper, signal processing techniques for noncoherent impulse-radio-based UWB (IR-UWB) communication system are proposed to provide system implementation of low power consumption and low complexity. The proposed system adopts a simple modulation technique of OOK (on-oft-keying) and noncoherent signal detection based on signal amplitude. In particular, a technique of a novel high speed digital sampler using a stable, lower reference clock is developed to detect nano-second pulses and recover digital signals from the pulses. Also, a 32 bits Turyn code for data frame synchronization and a convolution code as FEC are applied, respectively. To verify the proposed signal processing techniques for low power, low complexity noncoherent IR-UWB system, the proposed signal processing technique is implemented in FPGA and then a short-range communication system for wireless transmission of high quality MP3 data is designed and tested.

This paper proposes an efficient scheme to estimate the channel parameters such as channel gain and delay for the IEEE802.15.4a LR-UWB systems. Sliding window (SW) method is generally used for the channel estimation of LR-UWB systems, which extracts the channel parameters by performing the cross-correlation with the repeatedly transmitted signal. However, the SW method experiences the severe performance degradation because the cross-correlation is performed just once for the received signal. In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation scheme, which can achieve a great performance gain by performing the cross-correlation repeatedly with the repeated receive signal. In order to verify the performance gain of the proposed scheme, we performed the intensive simulation with the Saleh-Valenzuela channel model. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme has a performance improvement of 4dB compared to the conventional SW channel estimation scheme.

UWB radio systems have drawn attention during the last few years. These systems are the core technique for ubiquitous home and enable to co-exist with other narrow band systems over the same frequency without interfering them. But UWB signals have a very low power per pulse, so they are affected by strong narrow band interferences. Specially, IEEE 802.11a systems which operate around 5GHz overlap the band of UWB signals and they will interfere with UWB systems significantly. In this paper, we propose a novel narrow band interference suppression method based on singular value decomposition(SVD) algorithm for DS-UWB in IEEE 802.15.4a channel model. The proposed method is very effective and robust for both a single user DS-UWB system and a multiuser DS-UWB system to reduce the narrow band interference.

In this paper, we proposed the small planar monopole antenna with modified ground plane for UWB communications. The proposed antenna not only shows Ultra-Wideband characteristic(3.1~10.6 GHz) suitable for UWB communications but has partially notched-band characteristic to reject 5 GHz WLAN band(5.15~5.35 GHz, 5.470~5.825 GHz). The proposed antenna improved impedance matching through two slits on ground plane, and the rejection band was induced by two ${\lambda}$/4 open stubs on center of two slits. Fabricated antenna satisfied VSWR${\leq}$2 in 2.88~10.83 GHz except for the band rejection of 5.08~5.83 GHz.

In this paper, a new circuit topology of an ultra-wideband (UWB) 3.1-10.6GHz CMOS low noise amplifier is presented. The proposed UWB low noise amplifier is designed utilizing RC feedback and LC filter networks which can provide good input impedance matching. In this design, the current-reused topology is adopted to reduce the power consumption and the inductor-peaking technique is applied for the purpose of bandwidth extension. The performance results of this UWB low noise amplifier simulated in $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS process technology exhibit a power gain of 14-14.9dB, an input matching of better than -10.8dB, gain flatness of 0.9dB, and a noise figure of 2.7-3.3dB in the frequency range of 3.1-10.6GHz. In addition, the input IP3 is -5dBm and the power consumption is 12.5mW.

In this paper, a log periodic bow-tie dipole array (LPBDA) antenna for UWB communications is investigated. Bow-tie shaped dipole elements are used instead of general dipole elements for LPDA antennas and the input reflection coefficient and realized gain characteristics of the LPBDA as a function of a flare angle are analyzed. It turns out that as the flare angle of the bow-tie dipole elements is increased, the lowest operating frequency is shifted toward lower frequency and the operating frequency band is increased, but the average gain is decreased. However, the gain variation of the LPBDA is much decreased and the front-back ratio is improved compared to the LPDA. Standard LPDA and LPBDA with a flare angle of 13 degrees are fabricated on an FR4 substrate with a dielectric constant of 4.4 and a thickness of 1.6 mm. Measured gain for the LPDA ranges from 4 to 6.5 dBi at 3.1 to 10.6 GHz band, while that for the LPBDA is in the range of 4.2 to 5 dBi.
