This paper highlights a case study that investigates the behaviour of existing bridge, West Terrace Bridge, induced by horizontal seismic loading. Unfortunately the lack of past information related to seismic activity within the NSW region has made it difficult to understand better the capacity of the structure if Earthquake occurs. The research was conducted through the University of Western Sydney in conjunction with Railcorp Australia, as part of disaster reduction preparedness program. The focus of seismic analyses was on the assessment of stress behaviour, induced by cyclic horizontal/vertical displacements, within the concrete slab and steel truss of the bridge under various Earthquake Year Return Intervals (YRI) of 1-100, 1-200, 1-250, 1-500, 1-800, 1-1000, 1-1500, 1-2000 and 1-2500. Furthermore the stresses and displacements were rigorously analysed through a parametric study conducted using different boundary conditions. The numerical analysis of the concrete slab and steel truss were performed through the finite element software, ABAQUS. The field measurements and observation had been used to validate the results drawn from the finite element simulation. It was illustrated that under a YRI of 1/1000 the bottom chord of the steel truss failed as the stress induced surpassed the ultimate stress capacity and the horizontal displacement exceeded the allowable displacement measured in the field observations whereas the vertical displacement remained within the previously observed limitations. Furthermore the parametric studies in this paper demonstrate that a change in boundary conditions alleviated the stress distribution throughout the structure allowing it to withstand a greater load induced by the earthquake YRI but ultimately failed when the maximum earthquake loading was applied. Therefore it was recommended to provide a gap of 50mm on the end of the concrete slab to allow the structure to displace without increasing the stress in the structure. Finally, this study has proposed a design chart to showcase the failure mode of the bridge when subjected to seismic loading.

For the design of composite bridge piers, detail requirements for the reinforcements is not clear to satisfy the required seismic performance. Composite bridge piers were suggested to reduce the sectional dimensions and to enhance the ductility of the columns under earthquake loadings. In this paper, five specimens of concrete encased composite columns of 400mm diameter with single core steel were fabricated to investigate the seismic performance of the composite columns. Shaking table tests and a Pseudo-Dynamic test were carried out and structural behavior of small-scaled models considering near-fault motions was evaluated. Test parameters were the pace of the transverse reinforcement, lap splice of longitudinal reinforcement and encased steel member sections. The displacement ductility from shaking table tests was lower than that from the pseudo-dynamic test. Limited ductile design and 50% lap splice of longitudinal reinforcement reduced the displacement ductility. Steel ratio showed significant effect on the ultimate strength. Lap splice and low transverse reinforcements reduced the displacement capacity. The energy dissipation capacity of composite columns did not show significant difference according to details.

This paper is a study for behaviour of cavern type anchorage tunnels for suspension bridges with cable tension. Anchorage behaviour, design method for anchorage, and failure surface angle, ${\delta}$ are analyzed by comparing numerical analysis results and ultimate pullout capacities($P_u$) using bilinear corelation equation. Results show that design depths for cavern type anchorage tunnels are easily checked with linear relationships for $P/{\gamma}/H$ vs. displacement and $P_u/{\gamma}/H$ vs. H/b. The analysis results of maximum shear strain distribution and plastic status show that failure shapes are closer to circular arc model than soil cone model which frequently used. To an easy calculation of the ultimate pullout capacity, we propose a simple bilinear failure model in this study. The calculated ultimate pullout capacities from the proposed bilinear corelation equation using two failure angles results are similar to the ultimate pullout capacities from numerical analysis.
A total of 36 carbon steel and stainless steel bolted connections subjected to shear loading at different strain rates was experimentally investigated. The connection specimens were fabricated from carbon steel grades 1.20 mm G500 and 1.90 mm G450, as well as cold-formed stainless steel types EN 1.4301 and EN 1.4162 with nominal thickness 1.50 mm. The connection tests were conducted by displacement control test method. The strain rates of 10 mm/min and 20 mm/min were used. Structural behaviour of the connection specimens tested at different strain rates was investigated in terms of ultimate load, elongation corresponding to ultimate load and failure mode. Generally, it is shown that the higher strain rate on the bolted connection specimens, the higher ultimate load was obtained. The ultimate loads were averagely 2-6% higher, while the corresponding elongations were averagely 8-9% higher for the test results obtained from the strain rate of 20 mm/min compared with those obtained from the lower strain rates (1.0 mm/min for carbon steel and 1.5 mm/min for stainless steel). The connection specimens were generally failed in plate bearing of the carbon steel and stainless steel. It is shown that increasing the strain rate up to 20 mm/min generally has no effect on the bearing failure mode of the carbon steel and stainless steel bolted connections. The test strengths and failure modes were compared with the results predicted by the bolted connection design rules in international design specifications, including the Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS4600 2018), Eurocode 3 - Part 1.3 (EC3-1.3 2006) and North American Specification (AISI S100 2016) for cold-formed carbon steel structures as well as the American Specification (ASCE 2002), AS/NZS4673 (2001) and Eurocode 3 - Part 1.4 (EC3-1.4 2015) for stainless steel structures. It is shown that the AS/NZS4600 (2018), EC3-1.3 (2006) and AISI S100 (2016) generally provide conservative predictions for the carbon steel bolted connections. Both the ASCE (2002) and the EC3-1.4 (2015) provide conservative predictions for the stainless steel bolted connections. The EC3-1.3 (2006) generally provided more accurate predictions of failure mode for carbon steel bolted connections than the AS/NZS4600 (2018) and the AISI S100 (2016). The failure modes of stainless steel bolted connections predicted by the EC3-1.4 (2015) are more consistent with the test results compared with those predicted by the ASCE (2002).

Two case studies on the application of Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) are introduced. It is shown that the PDA and CAPWAP are effective tools for the construction control of pile foundations with minimum cost and time. The PDA and CAPWAP techniques are able to evaluate the performace of hammer and driving system: to check the stresses in the pile due to driving: to determine the damage of pile: to predict the ultimate bearing capacity of pile: to estimate the important soil paramaters such as the soil resistance, quake, and damping etc.: and to provide the load - displacement curve from the simulated static load test. Theoretical backgrounds of wave mechanics is briefly reviewed and the methodology of construction control using the PDA is also discussed.

FRP-concrete composite slab is consisted of brittle materials and then shows brittle failure mechanism. This study suggests a new design approach that FRP-concrete composite slab leads to ductile failure, and investigates their failure behaviors for two types of section by numerical analysis. Box-type section is higher than I-type section in load capacity to required FRP quantity. Each section was designed so that the strain of FRP plate is 50% to its ultimate strain on initiation of concrete crushing, and it is verified that displacement ductility is more than two. Ductility capacity can be improved by reducing the strain of FRP on initiation of concrete crushing, but as the strain of FRP is reduced load capacity to required FRP quantity is also reduced. Therefore section optimization study is needed considering safety and economical efficiency.

The seismic behavior of framed structure with Chevron-type bucking restrained braces were investigated and their behavior factors were evaluated following the procedure proposed in ATC-19 & ATC-34. Two types of structures, building frame systems and dual systems, with 4, 8, 12, and 16 stories were designed per the IBC 2000, the AISC LRFD and the AISC/SEAOC Recommended Provisions for BRBF. Nonlinear static pushover analyses were carried out to observe the plastic hinge formation and to identify the loads and the displacements at the yield and the ultimate states. Time history analyses were also carried out to compute the permanent displacement md the dissipated hysteretic energy. According to the analysis results, the response modification factors of model structures fumed out to be larger than what is proposed in the provision in low story structures, and a little smaller in medium-story structures. The dual systems, even though designed with smaller seismic load, showed superior static and dynamic performances.

This study is performed to investigate the behavior of multi-column piers and to evaluate the seismic performance. In this study, 3 types of scale model piers with 2-column are designed and tested by quasi-static load in both longitudinal and transverse directions. Each type of model consisting of 2 specimens has different reinforcement details in the lap splice of longitudinal bars and amount of transverse reinforcements. This paper reports that the ductility of the model in transverse direction is rather higher than in longitudinal direction because of formation of several plastic hinges and that the ultimate displacement and the energy absorbtion capacity are enhanced by using continuous longitudinal bars instead of lap-splice ones. And it is confirmed that relatively large amount of ductility can be achieved by providing sufficient lap-splice length and transverse reinforcements with end hook even if longitudinal bars are lap spliced in the base of pier.

Full scale structural test of 765kv electric transmission tower was performed to measure the stresses and displacement of towers under the design loadings, and the results were compared with analytical results based on three dimensional frame analysis. Also, the actual ultimate strength of the tower was measured through destructive test. Especially, to predict the behavior and failure of the connection of tubular member, finite element analysis was performed and compression test for the segments of tubular member were carried out. Valuable information for the overall and local behavior of the tower was obtained and reliability of current analytical method was confirmed.

In this study, confinement stress of concrete compression members rehabilitated with C.F.L were analyzed from the test. Test parameters are spacing, thickness and ply of rehabilitation material. Displacement, failure load were measured during test. The failure mode and ultimate load were analyzed from these measured data. In this study, a model equation for calculation of the confining stress with C.F.L was proposed based on the test results investigated here. The proposed equation included the effects of spacing, thickness and ply of rehabilitation material.
