  • Recently, there has been a rapid increase of interest in u-Health systems or instruments. The importance of testbeds has been discussed deeply also. However, beyond laboratory or ward environments, testbeds covering metropolitan area cannot be found easily. Moreover, there has been few papers which discuss the results of testbed operations for various instruments in different age groups. In this paper, the results of testbed which operated in Daegu metropolitan area are discussed and improvement directions to strengthen the competitiveness are proposed using user analysis. In particular, the results of trial services using the u-Life support instruments (medication reminder, falling safety phone, bio-patch and shirts, etc) for super aging societies in the near future are discussed.

  • This study aimed to identify differences in the level of work-life balance as well as the effect of independent variables, including family (sharing family work, support for working), organization (culture, support services and systems), and community variables (accessibility to and amount of work-life balance programs), on work-life balance in South Korea, Japan, and the U.K. For these purposes, data were collected from 311, 324, and 322 married, working women (from 30 to 50 years of age) from Korea, Japan, and the U.K., respectively. It was consistently shown that U.K. employees scored higher in work-life balance than Korean and Japanese employees. Compared with Japan and the U.K., Korean participants were significantly lower in terms of work-leisure balance and work-self-development balance. The regression analysis revealed that 'sharing family work with partner' was commonly important and a major factor in all three countries. A 'supportive organizational culture' predicted work-life balance for Korean and Japanese participants, while work-life balance programs had a powerful effect on work-life balance only for U.K. participants. In the case of community variables, there were no significant effects for U.K. participants with regard to work-life balance. In contrast, 'the amount of work-life balance programs offered' was shown to affect the work-life balance of Korean working women, while 'accessibility to the programs' was significantly influential in Japan. We interpret these results according to social, economic, political, and psychological factors.

  • Purpose:The purpose of this study was to find the ways to improve a quality of life of cancer patients through the family support by analyzing the correlation between quality of life and family support that cancer patients perceived. Methods: The questionnaires for this study were collected from 43 cancer patients who were admitted in general hospitals at Gyounggido from July 2004 to August 2004. The questionnaire was composed of total 60 items, which were general characteristics of 18 items, family support of 11 items and quality of life of 31 items. Kang's(1984) scale of family support and Tae's(2000) scale of quality of life were used. The data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 10.0 program using frequency, mean±SD, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: Forty three cancer patients answered the questionnaire. Twenty three patients was a male and 20 a female. Mean scale of family support according to general characteristics was 3.87±0.71. Mean scale of quality of life according to general characteristics was 5.89±1.08 and relatively high. The better degree of education, the higher quality of life significantly and the less physical discomfort, the higher quality of life significantly. The quality of life when the patient burdens the spouse with treatment cost was significantly higher. A correlation between degree of family support and quality of life was r=0.488 and the higher family support that cancer patients perceived, the higher quality of life significantly(p<0.001). Conclusion: The higher family support that cancer patients perceived, the higer quality of life significantly. We suggest concrete and systemic program for family support.

  • Each life has its own properties that distinguish one another. With this property, Oriental medicine suggests original diagnosis and treament. Our process of aging shows typical outline of cycle, i. e. from one's birth to death. Understanding the life cycle of men gives us very good hint to predict one's state of health, possible diseases, characteristics of disease in each term of his/her life cycle. It's because body and mode of diseases change according to age. Aging starts when $\breve{U}$m Essence(陰精)-the essence one receive from parents-dries up or when Deficient Fire(虛火) soars. Parts that compose our body-bones, muscles, flesh, etc.-gradually weaken and worn out as they no longer get support from Yang-Ki(陽氣), In "Yellow Emperor's Classic", aging starts around one's forties when $\breve{U}$m Essence(陰精) is reduced to less than half. However, what is usually accepted is that women start aging from 49 and men 64, regarding significant geriatric disease. As it is mentioned, aging starts with exhaustion of $\breve{U}$m Essence(陰精) which results in soaring Deficient Fire. Main symptoms are weak mental state due to Sin(神) disorder, and weak physical state due to Spleen and Stomacn(脾胃) disorder. Main principle in treating and preventing diseases related to aging is preserving $\breve{U}$m Essence(陰精), as well as fortifying Ki and Blood(氣血). To do this, Lung(肺)-which collects $\breve{U}$m Essence(陰精), and Kidney(腎) stores-which stores $\breve{U}$m Essence(陰精).

  • The advancement in ubiquitous healthcare specifically in preventive healthcare can lead to longer life expectancy especially for the elderly patients. To aid in preventing premature loss of lives as well as lengthening life span, this research aims to implement the use of mobile and wireless sensor technology to improve the quality of life and lengthen life expectancy. The threats to privacy and security have received increasing attention as ubiquitous healthcare applications over the Internet become more prevalent, mobile and universal. Therefore, we propose Context-aware Service of U-Healthcare Application based Knowledge using Ontology in secure health information exchange. This research also applies ontology in secure information exchange to support knowledge base, context modeling, and context reasoning by applying the general application areas for ontologies to the domain of context in ubiquitous computing environments. This paper also demonstrates how knowledge base, context technologies, and mobile web services can help enhance the quality of services in preventive ubiquitous healthcare to elderly patients.

  • As the research environment, such as Open Science, has recently changed, the scope of research support services conducted by university libraries is also expanding. In particular, there is a movement that needs to develop research support services of university libraries that are suitable for this through a clear understanding of the research life cycle centering on overseas. The purpose of this study is to provide suggestions that university libraries can refer to when developing research support services that can systematically support all phases of the research life cycle. To this end, the research life cycle was divided into five stages, "planning," "project," "publishing," "preservation" and "disseminating" and the research support services provided at each stage were examined around the cases of U.S. and domestic university libraries. Based on the implications obtained from the case, a service plan was proposed for domestic university libraries to systematically support each phase of the research life cycle.

  • Since the early 2000s, the United States has applied TLCSM to reduce life cycle costs while maintaining the weapons system's combat readiness. With the application of TLCSM, the ILS concept centered on the acquisition stage shifted to IPS, a concept that manages life cycle costs throughout the entire life cycle. In addition, LSAR for developing ILS has switched to LPD for developing IPS. In this study, LSAR in Korea and LPD in the United States were compared and analyzed, and policies necessary for the introduction of LPD in Korea were proposed.
