  • This paper is concerned with face recognition for human-robot interaction (HRI) in robot environments. For this purpose, we use Tensor Subspace Analysis (TSA) to recognize the user's face through robot camera when robot performs various services in home environments. Thus, the spatial correlation between the pixels in an image can be naturally characterized by TSA. Here we utilizes face database collected in u-robot test bed environments in ETRI. The presented method can be used as a core technique in conjunction with HRI that can naturally interact between human and robots in home robot applications. The experimental results on face database revealed that the presented method showed a good performance in comparison with the well-known methods such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) in distant-varying environments.

  • Fruition for a diverse uIT(Ubiquitous Information Technology) service is currently required through the convergence of what is known as ubiquitous computing technology. In recent years, with the rapid growth of the need for information services, heavier demands have been made upon the supply of high-quality multimedia services that require a high bandwidth. Today, various home network solutions have been proposed to manage these service smoothly and a system able to deal with various types of network traffic without delays. In addition, in established home network environments that mix wired and wireless networks, along with the steady evolution of wireless network technology and the earnest development of ubiquitous computing technology, sensor-based wireless networks have emerged as a core solution for home networks. In this paper, a sensor network-based home control system supporting the next generation home gateway system for ubiquitous home environments is designed and implemented.

  • Ubiquitous home is emerging as the future digital home environments that provide various ubiquitous home services like u-Life, u-Health, etc. It is composed of some home appliances and sensors which are connected through wired/wireless network. Ubiquitous home services become aware of user's context with the information gathered from sensors and make home appliances adapt to the current home situation for maximizing user convenience. In these context-aware home environments, it is the one of significant research topics to predict user behaviors in order to proactively control the home environment. In this paper, we propose Multi-Level prediction algorithm for context-aware services in ubiquitous home environment. The algorithm has two phases, prediction and execution. In the first prediction phase, the next location of user is predicted using tree algorithm with information on users, time, location, devices. In the second execution phase, our table matching method decides home appliances to run according to the prediction, device's location, and user requirement. Since usually home appliances operate together rather than separately, our approach introduces the concept of mode service, so that it is possible to control multiple devices as well as a single one. We also devised some scenarios for the conceptual verification and validated our algorithm through simulations.

  • In this paper we propose the U-VR Simulator which seamlessly connects entities in real and virtual environments by exploiting context, based on the concept of ubiquitous virtual reality. Using the U-VR Simulator, a smart home environment can be simulated and new virtual entities such as sensors, actuators, and services can be added to existing real entities. The proposed approach is fast and cost-effective because the simulator effectively utilizes both existing and simulated devices. In addition, our approach allows application developers to rapidly develop U-VR applications and extend them to relevant domains. As a future work, we will expand our simulator to intelligently augment virtual entities into real environments.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the importance of exterior environments and to identify the design guidelines for the therapeutic garden for cognitively impaired seniors with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The data was collected from 4 Adult Day Care Centers, 2 Nursing Homes, & 1 Assisted living in the U.S.A. from 2001 to 2002 by interview and the floor plan about the outdoor space. Although some may believe that patients with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders are unresponsive to environment, evidence shows that environments especially designed for cognitively impaired seniors can maintain or increase their level of functioning. The use of specially designed exterior environments nay have in reducing incidents of aggressive behavior, and contributing significantly to a wanderer management program. The checklist includes 6 dimensions: safety environment, various sensual stimulations, social interactions, wandering, privacy, and support orientation and reality. The results indicated that the exterior environment have to support wandering behavior, orientation and reality.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze and describe the characteristics of reading environment for the teens and their reading behavior in the U.S.A. Some researches and statistics on the reading behavior of young students in the U.S.A., the U.K. and Ireland were examined, and the reading environments for the teens in society and at schools and home were described. The development of school media centers since the 1950s and services for young adults in public libraries in the U.S.A. confirms that government, school, society and home should altogether cooperate in order to help students read more and build better reading environment for the teens.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how residents of assisted living facility (ALF) are satisfied with their residence and to identify the reasons for this satisfaction or dissatisfaction as a home. For this purpose, residents'experiences and opinions of the physical environment, the social environment, and the organizational environments such as policies and programs of ALFs were identified. As a multi-site case study, five ALFS in Southwest Virginia were studied using a cross-case analysis. Face-to-face interviews with 25 residents and five administrators of five ALFs, observations, and personal journal were done. Regardless of the type of facilities and the residents'characteristics, most of the respondents were satisfied with their current dwelling. In spite of high satisfaction with the facility, many people did not think of their current dwelling as a real "home." Residents of ALFs may have reordered their priorities in their current life situation so that safety, security, and care were more important to them than feeling "at home.""at home."

  • In present study, using 1572 low-income families and 266 Head Start teachers from Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES) in the U.S., we examined the effects of mothers' reading and the characteristics of interaction between teacher-child interaction on 4-and 5-year-olds' cognitive development represented by their verbal and numerical abilities. Frequencies of mothers' reading at home consistently predicted higher scores of children's Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and Woodcock Johnson Applied Problems. Teachers' sensitivity and permissiveness in their interactions with children in classroom were positively related to children's verbal abilities and teachers' sensitivity predicted better numerical abilities of children after controlling for mothers' reading and the characteristics of family and teacher. The findings shed light on the contributions of teacher behaviors and familial factors to children's cognitive development calling for attention to the need for parent education on cognitively stimulating family environments and continuing education for early childhood teachers focusing on quality interactions with young children.

  • A greater number of persons with disabilities including an increasing number of aging population has brought concerns on diversity and equality in use of products and environments. Universal design concepts have been introduced rapidly and widely in the built environments in Korea. The purpose of this study was to analyze a model house built in 2006, in the U.S. as a universal design home, systematically examine the universal design model house features, and explore possibility of application of the universal design features in the U.S. into a Korean setting. For this study, site analysis and contents analysis methods were used. Although housing norm, behavioral patterns and environmental contexts would be different, majority of universal design features appeared in the model house were expected to apply. Overall universal design features in the model house sought for attractive, comfort, convenient and safe environment with a little cost. Universal design features in the model house appeared in unobtrusive ways. Universal design considerations on floor materials in living room and bath and furniture arrangement need to modify or replace according to Korean lifestyle.
