Comparison of the bovine blood gas parameters produced with three types of portable blood gas analyzers

  • Background: A definite diagnosis should be made in the bovine practice field, however, it was difficult to perform laboratory analysis immediately. Currently, three types of portable blood gas analyzers are available in Korea. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the correlations among these three analyzers. Methods: Seventy-two plasma samples from Holstein-Friesian cows were used for blood gas analysis, and three instruments (EDAN i15 Vet, VETSCAN i-STAT, and EPOC) were operated simultaneously. Moreover, plasma calcium levels were compared between these portable analyzers and blood chemistry device, which is usually used in a laboratory environment. Pearson analysis was performed to confirm the correlation of each parameter produced with the three instruments and blood chemistry analyzer. Results: As results, high correlation was observed in parameters of pH, pO2, potassium ion, ionized calcium, and glucose (p < 0.001, r > 0.7). In addition, pCO2 showed a moderate correlation among the three analyzers (p < 0.001, r > 0.5), and there was no correlation among all instruments for sodium ions. There was also a high correlation between ionized calcium from the three portable devices and total calcium from the biochemistry analyzer (p < 0.001, r > 0.9). Conclusions: In conclusion, there was a high correlation between results from the three different blood gas analyzers used in the bovine clinical field in Korea. Thus, a consistent diagnosis can be made even with different equipment if the operator is aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each piece of equipment and operates it properly.

Experimental Evaluation of Scattered X-Ray Spectra due to X-Ray Therapeutic and Diagnosis Equipment for Eye Lens Dosimetry of Medical Staff

  • Background: For proper monitoring of the eye lens dose, an appropriate calibration factor of a dosimeter and information about the mean energies of X-rays are indispensable. The scattered X-ray energy spectra should be well characterized in medical practices where eye lenses of medical staffs might be high. Materials and Methods: Scattered X-ray energy spectra were experimentally derived for three different types of X-ray diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, i.e., the computed tomography (CT) scan, the angiography and the fluoroscopy. A commercially available CdZnTe (CZT) spectrometer with a lead collimator was employed for the measurement of scattered X-rays, which was performed in the usual manner. Results and Discussion: From the obtained energy spectra, the mean energies of the scattered X-rays lied between 40 and 60 keV. This also agreed with that obtained by the conventional half value layer method. Conclusion: The scattered X-rays to which medical workers may be exposed in the region around the eyes were characterized by means of spectrometry. The obtained mean energies of the scattered X-rays were found to match the flat region of the dosimeter response.

중국(中國)의 수산업분야(水産業分野) 교육(敎育) 및 연구체제(硏究體制) (Fisheries Education and Research System in P.R.China)

  • Notwithstanding Korea and P. R.China are located in the neighborhood each other geographically, the break of diplomatic relations of them continued a long term, and the difference of ideology and social structure of two countries was acting as a barrier to understand each other in many fields. Two countries established formal diplomatic relation in 1992, and then the interchange and mutual cooperation between both countries are being performed rapidly, but the field of fisheries education and research system is continuing in the early stage yet. It can be easily expected that the interchange and mutual cooperation in the field of fisheries through the ocean contribute not only to the international friendship, but to the rational management of fisheries resources. In accordence with the necessity mentioned above, the author considered the general situation of fisheries education and research system in P. R. China. P. R. China runs two kinds of fisheries education system which are regular and irregular system. The regular education system is the principal means of cultivating fisheries scientists and technicians. And there are three grade levels in regular education : the tasks of which are undertaken by the fisheries universities, fisheries colleges and fisheries high schools. Adult education system in fisheries are of the following types : fishery cadet training courses, evening schools, correspondence courses and broadcasting or TV programs. The fisheries research in P. R. China is undertaken by the research institutes under the Bureau of Aquatic Products, and the basic research of oceanography is undertaken by the oceanographic institutes under the Chinese Academy of Science.

A Study on the Prioritization of Policy for Gendered Innovations

  • Gendered innovation in Science, Technology and Innovation, which seeks better science for both men and women by integrating sex and gender analysis, has become an important issue in the entire process of STI, as initiated by the European Commission, Canadian Institutes of Health Research in Canada and the National Institutes of Health in the United States. Korea has also attempted to reflect gendered innovations in Science and Technology as a critical factor in the 3rd and 4th National Plan, followed by the Act on Women Scientists and Engineers (2002). Against this background, the aim of this study is to prioritize the policy instruments regarding gendered innovation in Research and Development. Through the Focus Group Interview (FGI) and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), this study attempts to set the priority among selected criteria, various types of policy instruments, and the applied research development area. As a result, this study shows the preparation of the relevant legal and institutional mechanisms for the full introduction of gendered innovation in S&T, and the importance of various policy instruments for S&T innovation in the fields of planning, budgeting, managing national R&D projects, evaluating and impact assessment, etc., being derived in a systematic way to ensure their effectiveness.

요양보호사의 직무만족이 조직몰입에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Care Workers on Job Satisfaction on Organization Commitment)

  • 본 연구는 요양보호사의 직무만족이 조직몰입에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 연구대상은 전라남도 동부지역의 노인장기요양기관에서 근무하는 요양보호사 230명을 대상으로 우편조사를 실시하였으며, 결측값을 제외한 141부를 분석자료 활용하였다. 조사자료는 SPSS 18.0을 이용하여 빈도분석, 신뢰도분석, t/F-test, 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석결과는 첫째, 요양보호사의 개인적 특성과 직무특성에 따른 조직몰입 차이는 개인적 특성 중 연령과 직무특성 중 기관유형, 근무형태에 따라 조직몰입이 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 요양보호사의 개인적 특성과 직무환경 변인을 통제한 상태에서 요양보호사의 직무만족이 조직몰입에 미치는 영향력을 분석한 위계적 회귀분석 결과, 직무만족이 조직몰입에 가장 큰 영향이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 요양보호사들의 조직몰입 수준을 결정짓는 것은 자신의 직무에 대한 만족에 따라 달라짐을 의미한다.

Innovative Writing Assignments in Engineering to Enhance Learning, Thinking and Motivation

  • Three benefits of incorporating writing in engineering curricula are presented. The first benefit is in improving the communication skills which are essential for engineers and are attained through practice. The second benefit is in enhancing learning and is achieved by utilizing the complex process of writing to heighten the level of understanding. The third benefit, though difficult to recognize and even more difficult to promote in a society (and educational institutes) steeped in the behaviorist tradition, is in promoting meaningful learning by cultivating motivation internal to students themselves. The boundaries of writing activities are broadened to include that of stating a paragraph or even one complete sentence such that it may be incorporated in engineering without undue strain. A two-year trial of incorporating four types of writing assignments in six different courses (a total of 12 classes) at Michigan Technological University shows that writing assignments can be designed to achieve different degrees of the three aforementioned benefits. It is found that different types of writing activities need to be assigned depending on the status of course (elective vs. required) and on the composition of the students taking the course (upper division vs. lower division; majors vs. non-majors).

가구주 직업이 가계의 부채구조에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Householder's Occupation on the Debt Structures of Households)

  • This study investigated the effect of householder's occupation on the debt structures of households. Household debts were categorized into six types according to borrowing sources: debts from banks, other financial institutes, employers, private sources, Gye, and retailers. Householder's occupations were classified into four groups: full-time employees, employers, farmers & fishermen, and part-time employees. The data came from the 1996 Korean Household Panel Study. It was found that the rates of holding each types of debt and the debt amounts were different according to householder's occupation. The human and economic resources to overcome the possible household debt problems were also different by the householder's occupation.

독성가스 감지용 센서 기술 동향 리뷰 (Review on Sensor Technology to Detect Toxic Gases)

  • The excess use and generation of various toxic gases from many industrial complexes and plant facilities have increased the possibility of leakage or explosion accidents, which can cause fatal damage to human beings in the wide range of neighboring area. To prevent the exposure to the fatal toxic gases, it is very important to monitor the leakage of toxic gases using gas sensors in real time. Various types of gas sensors, which can be classified as semiconductor, electrochemical, optical, and catalytic combustion types according to the operating principles, have been developed. In this review, the operation principles of gas sensors are explained and the performance of those sensors is compared. The state-of-the-art gas sensor technologies developed by research institutes or companies are reviewed also.

친환경 쌀의 유통 특성 및 재배유형별 경영성과 분석 (Analysis of Economic Effects and Distribution Structure for Environment-friendly Rice's Production)

  • This study was carried out to present the measures for the stable environment-friendly rice's production, farm income increase and consumption revitalization and so on by analyzing economic effects of the environment-friendly rice's production complex by certification type, cultivation type and distribution type. Data were collected from the environment-friendly rice's production complex in Kyunggi, Kangwon, Chungnam and Chunnam provinces. Survey was conducted with sorted by organic and no-pesticide farming. Of the samples 5 types of organic farming and 4 types of no-pesticide farming were surveyed in 17 and 18 complex, respectively. The farmers income of organic and no-pesticide farming per 10a were individually about $29{\sim}68%$ and 50% higher than the conventional farming. Base on the above results, the reasonable measures fur the stable environment-friendly rice's production and distribution and consumption revitalization were to secure partnership among business, universities, government and research institutes sectors, to organize farmers group and production complex, to establish RPC for environment-friendly rice and to introduce certification system for the distribution dealers.

노인장기요양보험 급여 주야간보호사업소의 운영현황 (Current Management Status of 'Day and Night Care Facilities' for Long-Term Care Insurance Benefit)

  • 본 연구는 노인장기요양보험제도 도입 이후 주야간보호사업소 운영현황을 파악하고 가동률 관련 요인을 탐색하고자 하였다. 전국 주야간보호사업소에 2010년 7월 14일에서 7월 28일까지 설문지를 우편 발송하여 설문에 성실히 응답한 277개소의 조사지를 분석하였다(응답률 24.5%). 사업소의 운영주체는 법인이 219개소(79.1%), 개인이 48개소(17.8%), 국공립 등이 10개소(3.6%)이었으며, 평균 가동률은 국공립 등은 79.08%, 법인은 72.49%인 반면, 개인운영 사업소는 57.58%로 낮았다. 사업소 운영주체별로 전체 인력 수에는 차이가 없었으나, 국공립 사업소는 간호사 수가 1.07명인데 비해 개인 사업소는 0.08명으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 법인 및 국공립사업소가 개인사업소보다 프로그램 실시율이 높았고, 신체활동, 음악활동, 물리치료, 레크레이션, 작업치료 등에서는 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었다. 본 연구결과에 기초할 때, 개인운영 사업소와 2008년 이후에 설립된 사업소에 대해 대상자 평가 및 모니터링, 프로그램 실시에 대한 교육훈련 및 서비스 질 관리를 강화할 필요성이 제기된다. 또한, 주야간보호서비스 이용자의 가족에 대한 실효성 있는 지원을 강화하여 주야간보호서비스에 대한 수요를 확대해야 할 것이다.
