  • The purpose of this paper was to analyze the role of illustrations in elementary textbooks (3~4 grade) of the 2009 revised curriculum of science education in Korea from point of view of aim of science by applying the criteria of 5E inquiry process model for reflecting core aim of the science education. The subjects of the paper was the 105 illustrations in the earth-science domain of elementary science textbooks (3~4 grade) of the 2009 revised curriculum of science education in Korea. The analysis criterion was of two categories, the function of illustration and the role of illustration. the function of illustration was divided into three subcategories such as Exclusiveness type, correspondence type and supplementary type. The role of illustration was divide into five subcategories such as Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration and Evaluation. According to results of the illustration analysis are as follows: the result of the function of illustration are exclusiveness type 39, correspondence type 36 and supplementary type 30, the important of point to note is that there are a lot of exclusiveness type considerably. compared with other subjects, this fact indicate character of illustration of the only science textbook. The result of the role of illustration are Engagement 14, exploration 64, explanation 25, elaboration 2 and evaluation 0. This data indicate main role of illustrations in earth-science domain is to help the students to be able to observe and explore. Cross-analysis of the function and role was a significant difference. Role of illustration was evenly distributed within Exclusiveness type on the other hand, the role of illustrations was mainly exploration and explanation in correspondence and supplementary type. Especially, illustration of exploration was mainly correspondence type.

  • Despite the creative strengths fashion illustrations, most fashion related advertisements use photographs instead. Furthermore, there is not much study done on the effects of fashion illustrations. Through this study the authors discover the effectiveness of fashion related magazine advertisements using fashion illustrations by looking into the level of recognition due to interaction effects between advertisements using photographs and advertisements using fashion illustrations. This study, however, does not focus on comparing the different levels of recognition effect between photographs and fashion illustrations. After a literature review of magazines with high rank subscriptions, an experiments was conducted. A booklet was made using 16 fashion illustration advertisements and 16 photograph advertisements all designed to control variables other than advertisement type. Then a survey was taken using the booklet to measure the recognition levels of the different types of advertisements. Through an ANOVA test of the 2 ${\times}$ 3 factorial designed model the authors derived results implying that interaction effects do exist between the different types of advertisements. In the environment where advertisements using photographs dominate, advertisements using fashion illustrations can effectively be recognised by the consumers. Through this study, the authors wish to give guidance to decision makers in the fashion industry related to the type of printed advertisement they should seek.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the illustrations used in elementary science textbooks of Korea and BSCS in USA, and analyze the types, role, and characteristics of the illustrations. For the analysis, we used 8 elementary science textbooks of the 7th curriculum of science education in Korea from 3rd through 6th grade, and 16 volumes (stage 2 to stage 5) used in BSCS in USA. We examined types of illustrations, including photograph, picture, graphic, cartoon, chart, and their 4 roles such as, motivation, introducing the lesson activity, providing the materials, presenting the learning result. The results were as follows: First, Korean textbooks have more "photograph" type of illustration than BSCS. In BSCS textbooks, diverse types of illustrations were used compared to Korean textbooks. Second, large portion of illustrations in Korean textbooks took a role of providing materials. In BSCS textbooks, the roles of illustrations were more diverse. In BSCS, there were many illustrations to describe students working together with the disabled children, and to explicitly encourage cooperative learning. Considering the findings in this study, educational implications were discussed.

  • Transcribed Buddhist sutras generally consist of a frontispiece illustration, sutra illustrations, and sutra text, although some parts may be lost over time. Most transcribed sutras originally include an official record of the transcription (saseonggi) at either the beginning or end of the volume, which document various details of the production, including who commissioned the sutra and when it was transcribed. If such records are unavailable or difficult to decipher, the date of the sutra can only be estimated by comparison to other works with known production dates. This is the case with Korean Treasure #978, the "Transcription of the Avatamsaka Sutra (Zhou Version) in Gold on White Paper" (hereinafter, "Avatamsaka Sutra, Volume 29"), which does not contain any details of its production. Based on formal comparisons, the volume has been estimated to date from the early Joseon period. Important criteria for estimating the production date include the type of calligraphy script and the overall expression of the sutra illustrations. However, these features are missing from some early Joseon sutras, making it difficult to definitively assert which characteristics are representative of the period. Also, transcribed sutras from the late Goryeo period (after 1350) and early Joseon period are often very similar in terms of the expression of the frontispiece illustrations and sutra illustrations. From the late Goryeo period through the early Joseon period, the illustrations of transcribed sutras, which had previously been relatively detailed and realistic, gradually became more formalized and stylized. Significantly, Avatamsaka Sutra, Volume 29 includes illustrations showing both styles of expression (i.e., realistic and formalized). Moreover, the hemp leaf design on the frontispiece and the border around the sutra illustrations are unique features that have never been seen on any other transcribed sutras. Notably, however, Avatamsaka Sutra in Gold on White Paper, Volume 26 (hereinafter, "Avatamsaka Sutra, Volume 26"), which has not yet been introduced in academic research, is complete with frontispiece, sutra illustrations, and sutra text. This sutra is identical to Avatamsaka Sutra, Volume 29 in size, composition, and details, and is thus estimated to have been produced at the same time and by the same patrons. According to the record at the end of the volume, Avatamsaka Sutra, Volume 26 was commissioned in 1348 by Gi Cheol (d. 1365), which corresponds to the estimated date of Avatamsaka Sutra, Volume 29 derived by formal comparison. Based on this new information, Avatamsaka Sutra, Volume 29 was likely produced in the late Goryeo period rather than the early Joseon period, as has previously been presumed. The new study of Avatamsaka Sutra, Volume 26 also seems to confirm that both sutras were transcribed by highly skilled artisans in 1348 of the late Goryeo period, a transitional phase in the expression of sutra illustrations.

  • BACKGROUND: The Geomunoreum Lava Tube System (GLTS) is both vast and culturally valuable. The Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes, which are partly composed of the GLTS, have been declared as a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site. Exploration of the caves is strictly regulated to conserve these vulnerable environments. Photographs provide limited information and do not describe the entire environment comprehensively. Therefore, we created several illustrations of the lava tubes to display their environmental features. METHODS AND RESULTS: We explored six lava caves (upstream and downstream) in the GLTS and photographed their geological features and yellow walls, the colors of which are influenced by microbial mats. We compared the hex codes of the wall colors using the Clip Studio v1.10.5 software and created illustrations that accurately represent the scale and features of the caves. CONCLUSION(S): Upstream and downstream caves of the GLTS differ in scale and volcanic features. We illustrated various characteristics of the caves including lava cave features, vegetation, and microbial mats. We also described the internal and external cave environments.

  • In textbooks, illustrations are used to easily explain concepts and guide the exploration process. Therefore, the illustration should be presented accurately and easily. However, as a result of analyzing previous studies, it was confirmed that there was no research related to illustration analysis at all in the case of the elementary school 'software education' unit. Therefore, among the six practical textbooks developed according to the 2015 revised curriculum, the illustration of the 'software education' unit was analyzed in terms of type, function, and use, and provided guidelines for the adoption of textbooks, curriculum research, and next textbook development. As a result of analyzing six practical textbooks, all textbooks used more than one illustration per page, and the types of illustrations were used in the order of screen capture, picture, picture, table, illustration, illustrative function, and use.
