  • When a circular tube with uniform heat generation within the wall was placed in a cross flow, heat flows by conduction in the circumferential direction due to the asymmetric nature of the fluid flow around the perimeter of the circular tube The circumferential heat flow affects the wall temperature distribution to such an extent that. in some cases, significantly different results may be obtained for geometrically similar surfaces. In the present investigation, the effect of circumferential wall heat conduction is investigated for forced convection around circular tube in cross flow of air and water Two-dimensional temperature distribution $T_w(r,{\theta})$ is calculated through the numerical analysis. The difference between one-dimensional and two-dimensional solutions is demonstrated on the graph of local heat transfer coefficients. It is observed that the effect of working fluid is very remarkable.

  • In this study, laboratory experiments were performed to investigate the flow characteristics of a two-dimensional neutrally buoyant jet in the inlet region of a rectangular laboratory settling tank. Velocity measurements were made with a three-component ADV. Two types of baffles were installed in front of two-dimensional slot; a one-sided and a two-sided baffle. The flow fields from a plane jet impinging on these two types of baffles and a plane jet without a baffle showed quite different characteristics. To concentrate on investigating these flow characteristics, the effects of density currents due to temperature difference or the presence of sediments were not studied. Results of the experiments reveal that the use of the two-sided baffle results in the shortest inlet region. Also shown is that, in addition to the types of baffles, the Froude number turns out to be an important factor in the extent of the inlet region.

  • The dynamic character of a system of the governing differential equations for the one- dimensional two-fluid model, where the momentum flux parameters are employed to consider the velocity and void fraction distribution in a flow channel, is investigated. In response to a perturbation in the form of a'traveling wave, a linear stability analysis is peformed for the governing differential equations. The expression for the growth factor as a function of wave number and various flow parameters is analytically derived. It provides the necessary and sufficient conditions for the stability of the one-dimensional two-fluid model in terms of momentum flux parameters. It is demonstrated that the one-dimensional two-fluid model employing the physical momentum flux parameters for the whole range of dispersed flow regime, which are determined from the simplified velocity and void fraction profiles constructed from the available experimental data and $C_{o}$ correlation, is stable to the linear perturbations in all wave-lengths. As the basic form of the governing differential equations for the conventional one-dimensional two-fluid model is mathematically ill posed, it is suggested that the velocity and void distributions should be properly accounted for in the one-dimensional two-fluid model by use of momentum flux parameters.s.

  • Flow through compliant tubes with linear taper in wall thickness is numerically simulated by finite element analysis. Two models are examined: a planar two-dimensional channel, and an axisymmetric tube. For verification of the numerical method, flow through a compliant stenotic vessel is simulated and compared to existing experimental data. Computational results for an axisymmetric tube show that as cross-sectional area falls with a reduction in downstream pressure, flow rate increases and reaches a maximum when the speed index (mean velocity divided by wave speed) is near unity at the point of minimum cross-section area, indicative of wave speed flow limitation or "choking" (flow speed equals wave speed) in previous one-dimensional studies. For further reductions in downstream pressure, flow rate decreases. Cross-sectional narrowing is significant but localized. When the ratio of downstream-to-upstream wall thickness is ${\le}$ 2 the area throat is located near the downstream end; as wall taper is increased to ${\ge}$ 3 the constriction moves to the upstream end of the tube. In the planar two-dimensional channel, area reduction and flow limitation are also observed when outlet pressure is decreased. In contrast to the axisymmetric case, however, the elastic wall in the two-dimensional channel forms a smooth concave surface with the area throat located near the mid-point of the elastic wall. Though flow rate reaches a maximum and then falls, the flow does not appear to be choked.

  • Holographic interferometric tomography can provide reconstruction of instantaneous three-dimensional gross flow fields. The technique however confronts ill-posed reconstruction problems in practical applications. Experimental data are usually limited in projection and angular scanning when a field is captured instantaneously or under the obstruction of test models and test section enclosures. An algorithm, based on a series expansion method, has been developed to improve the reconstruction under the ill-posed conditions. A three-dimensional natural convection flow around two interacting isothermal cubes is experimentally investigated. The flow can provide a challenging reconstruction problem and lend itself to accurate numerical solution for comparison. The refractive index fields at two horizontal sections of the thermal plume with and without an opaque object are reconstructed at a limited view angle of 80$\circ$. The experimental reconstructions are then compared with those from numerical calculation and thermocouple thermometry. It confirms that the technique is applicable to reconstruction of reasonably complex, three-dimensional flow fields.

  • For a fixed parametrization of a curve in an orientable two-dimensional Riemannian manifold, we introduce and investigate a new frame and curvature function. Due to the way of defining this new frame as being the time-dependent rotation in the tangent plane of the standard Frenet frame, both these new tools are called flow.

  • Bubble flow characteristics in fluidized beds were analyzed by CPFD simulation. A fluidized bed, which had the size of $0.3m-ID{\times}2.4m-high$, was modeled by commercial CPFD $Barracuda^{(R)}$. Properties of bed material were $d_p=150{\mu}m$, ${\rho}_p=2,330kg/m^3$, and $U_{mf}=0.02m/s$. Gas was uniformly distributed and the range of superficial gas velocity was 0.07 to 0.16 m/s. Two other geometries were modeled. The first was a three-dimensional model, and the other was a two-dimensional model of $0.01m{\times}0.3m{\times}2.4m$. Bubble size and rising velocity were simulated by axial and radial position according to superficial gas velocity. In the case of three-dimensional model, simulated bubble rising velocity was different from correlations, because there was zigzag motion in bubble flow, and bubble detection was duplicated. To exclude zigzag motion of bubble flow, bubble rising velocity was simulated in the two-dimensional model and compared to the result from three-dimensional model.

  • Frequently occurring flood and drought have increased the necessity of an effective water resources control and management of river flows. Therefore, the simulation of the flow distribution in natural rivers is very important to the solution of a wide variety of practical flow problems in water resources engineering. Usually in many flow problems, two-dimensional approach can provide good estimates of complex flow features in the flow around islands and obstructions, flow at confluence and flow in braided channel. The objective of this study is to examine validation of developed an accurate and robust two-dimensional finite element method with wet and dry simulation in complex natural rivers. Milyang river, and Kumho river and Keum river were performed for tests. The results were compared with those of existing model. The suggested model displayed reasonable flow distribution compared with existing model in dry area for application of natural river flow. As a result of this study, the developed general two-dimensional model provide a reliable results for flow distribution of wet and dry domain, it could be further developed to basis for extending to water quality and sediment transport analysis.

  • Basic flow fields of two dimensional V flames were examined as a preliminary work to study the instability of premixed flame with vorticity generation. Laminar premixed propane and methane flame were anchored by electrically heated wire to make two dimensional V flames. Flow fields were measured mainly by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetray) and the results were compared with those obtained by LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) to confirm their reliability. Because the curvatures of V flames are so small, V flames were locally assumed to be inclined planar flames in gravitational field. The measured flow fields were locally compared with those of analytical solutions, which showed the qualitatively similar results. In downstream region, the vorticity fields were nearly constant except region near the center line, which support the assumption of locally one dimensional flame. Besides it was tried to find experimentally the similarity of flow fields in downstream region. Finally, stability diagram of propane and methane flames were drawn for the equivalence ratio less than one and the wide range of mean velocity.

  • Two-dimensional stagnation flow toward a plane wall coated with magnetic fluid of uniform thickness is investigated. The flow field is represented as a similarity solution of the Navier-Stokes equation for this incompressible laminar flow. The resulting third order ordinary differential equation is solved numerically by using the shooting method and by determining two shooting parameters so as to satisfy the boundary and interface conditions. Features of the flow including streamline patterns are investigated for the varying values of density ratio, viscosity ratio, and Reynolds number. An adverse flow with double eddy pair in magnetic fluid region is found to emerge as the Reynolds number becomes higher than a threshold value. The results for the interface velocity, interface and wall shear stress, and boundary layer and displacement thickness are also presented.
