  • Due to the rapid developments in information and computer technology, the warfare paradigm is being transformed into information-centric and knowledge-based warfare. This atmosphere may have significant impact on the ROK armed forces' Force Improvement Plans (FIP) which is documented in 'Defense White Paper 2004'. We focus here on the relationship of information-centric force and deterrence of invasion. Particularly, we are interested in understanding the level of information superiority that might be required to deter the invasion. In order to solve this problem, we employed two-sided, zero-sum strategic game to simulate the outcome with six hypothetical cases devised by varying the level of information superiority.

  • In the vibration target localization algorithms based on time difference of arrival (TDOA), Fang algorithm is often used in practice because of its simple calculation. However, when the delay estimation error is large, the localization equation of Fang algorithm has no solution. In order to solve this problem, one dimensional search location algorithm based on TDOA is proposed in this paper. The concept of search is introduced in the algorithm. The distance d1 between any single sensor and the vibration target is considered as a search variable. The vibration target location is searched by changing the value of d1 in the two-dimensional plane. The experiment results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to traditional methods in localization accuracy.

  • Marsupialization is widely used as a primary treatment modality for reducing size of large cysts. However, there is no recommendation for specific duration of marsupialization. In addition, Carnoy's solution usually is applied at the time of enucleation as a fixative agent. In this report, we present an appropriate marsupialization duration of ameloblastoma involving two unerupted teeth. In this present study, marsupialization using a Foley catheter was performed in two cases of ameloblastoma of the mandible involving two adjacent impacted teeth. Carnoy's solution was applied for 3-5 minutes after enucleation in both patients. Periodically during marsupialization, the size of the radiolucency was measured in panoramic view, and clinical examination was performed. No remarkable paresthesia or soft tissue injury was observed after application of Carnoy's solution or during follow-up. We recommend 12 to 16 weeks as an adequate marsupialization duration for a large ameloblastoma involving two impacted teeth based on increased radiopacity along the margins of the lesions. Poor oral hygiene was an issue after 12 weeks of marsupialization in one case. There were no remarkable complications with Carnoy's solution in either case. The Foley tube has a two-way system that is more effective for irrigating the cavity than is the conventional one-way system.

  • Aim: XRCC1 and XPD are two major repair genes involved in nucleotide excision repair (NER), which is reported to be associated with risk of several cancers. We explored the association of XRCC1 and XPD polymorphisms with the risk of HCC. Methods: A total of 410 cases with HCC and 410 health controls were collected. XRCC1 Arg194Trp, XRCC1 Arg399Gln, XPD Lys751Gln and XPD Asp312Asn genotyping was performed by duplex polymerase-chain-reaction with the confronting-two-pair primer (PCR-CTPP) method. Results: XRCC1 194Trp/Trp was strongly significantly associated with an increased risk of HCC cancer when compared with the wide-type genotype (OR=2.26, 95% CI=(1.23-5.38). Individuals carrying the XRCC1 399Gln/Gln showed increased risk of HCC (OR=1.74, 95%CI=1.06-2.74). The XPD 751Gln/Gln and Gln allele genotype were associated with strong elevated susceptibility to HCC (OR=3.51 and 1.42, respectively). Conclusion: These results suggest that polymorphisms in XRCC1 and XPD may have functional significance in risk of HCC.

  • We intended to describe 2 digenean trematodes found from a Chinese sea snake, Laticauda semifasciata, as the new fauna in the Republic of Korea. The snake was caught offshore of Aewol-eup, Jeju-do, in August 2017. Two species of fluke were found in the lung and intestinal tract of the snake in the process of necropsy. They were identified as Pulmovermis cyanovitellosus Coil and Kuntz, 1960 and Harmotrema laticaudae Yamaguti, 1933, respectively based on the morphological characters. Pulmovermis cyanovitellosus showed elongated body with well-developed and elongated male genital system and compact vitelline. And H. laticaudae was characterized by linguiform body with heavily armed cirrus with excretory system. This is the first time both species have been reported and described off the Korean coast. We provide morphological descriptions with some comments on their biology and geographical distribution. In addition, the taxonomic validity of the genus Hydrophitrema Sandars, 1960 was discussed, in terms of morphological descriptions and host ranges. This study provides novel insight into digenean fluke species existing off the coast of Korea.

  • The authors describe a case of choriocarcinoma that metastasized to the cerebral cortex, vertebral body, and intramedullary spinal cord. A 21-year-old woman presented with sudden headache, vomiting and a visual field defect. Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance examinations revealed an intracranial hemorrhage in the left temporo-parietal lobe and two enhancing nodules in the left temporal and right frontal lobe. After several days, the size of the hemorrhage increased, and a new hemorrhage was identified in the right frontal lobe. The hematoma and enhancing mass in the left temporo-parietal lobe were surgically removed. Choriocarcinoma was diagnosed after histological examination. At 6 days after the operation, her consciousness had worsened and she was in a state of stupor. The size of the hematoma in the right frontal lobe was enlarged. We performed an emergency operation to remove the hematoma and enhancing mass. Her mental status recovered slowly. Two months thereafter, she complained of paraplegia with sensory loss below the nipples. Whole spine magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-enhancing mass in the thoracic intramedullary spinal cord and L2 vertebral body. Despite chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the patient died 13 months after the diagnosis.
