Background: Studies on the association between occupational stress and depression have been frequently reported. However, the cross-sectional designs of studies limited insight into causal associations. In this study, we investigated the longitudinal association between occupational stress and new-onset depression among employees in a single manufacturing plant. Methods: The annual health checkup data of employees at a manufacturing plant in Korea were collected. A total of 1,837 male employees without depression who completed a health checkup during two consecutive years were included. Occupational stress was measured using a short form of the Korea Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS-SF), and depression was assessed using a Patient Health Questionnaire-2. The association between occupational stress change over the two years and newly developed depression was investigated using two logistic regression models. Results: Across all sub-factors of KOSS-SF, employees who reported increased occupational stress had a higher risk of new-onset depression. Newly developed depression was significantly associated with job demand (odds ratio [OR]: 4.34; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.37-7.96), job insecurity (OR: 3.21; 95% CI: 1.89-5.48), occupational climate (OR: 3.18; 95% CI: 1.91-5.31), lack of reward (OR: 2.28; 95% CI: 1.26-4.12), interpersonal conflict (OR: 2.14; 95% CI: 1.18-3.86), insufficient job control (OR: 1.93; 95% CI: 1.05-3.56), and the organizational system (OR: 1.84; 95% CI: 1.01-3.36). Conclusions: For every sub-factor of the KOSS-SF, occupational stress increase and persistent high stress were associated with the risk of developing new-onset depression. Among the seven sub-factors, job demand had the most significant effect. Our results show that occupational stress should be managed to promote employee mental healthcare.
The purpose of this paper is to extract the vowel formants of the ten young male speakers from the Buckeye Corpus of Conversational Speech [1] and to analyze them in comparison to earlier works in terms of various phonetic factors that are expected to affect the realization of the formant distribution. The first two formant frequency values were automatically extracted with a Praat script along with such factors as the place of articulation, the content versus function word information, syllabic stress information, the location in a word, location in utterance, speech rate of three consecutive words, and the word frequency in the corpus. The results indicated that the formant patterns from the corpus were very different from those of earlier works although the overall pattern was similar and that the factors were strongly responsible for the realization of the two formants. The present study examined differences in children's behavior problems and peer interaction, and parental factors including self-esteem, depression and childrearing stress between atopic dermatitis(AD) and normal(non-AD) children in each gender, and analyzed the effects of the parental factors on the two variables of AD children. 165 AD and 1176 non-AD children of age 5 were selected from the 6th year data of the Panel Study on Korean Children. The results from t-test and multiple regression are as follows. First, only AD boys showed a higher level of behavior problems than non-AD boys, but peer interaction showed no difference between AD and non-AD groups. Compared with non-AD children's parents, mothers of AD children showed a higher stress level and mothers of AD boys had a higher depression level. But there were no differences in maternal self-esteem and paternal factors between the groups. Second, AD boys' behavior problems were related to maternal factors and paternal stress, and some characteristics of AD girls' behavior problems were related with some parental variables. But peer interaction of AD children had no relation with parental factors. Third, behavior problems were influenced by maternal stress in AD boys and influenced by maternal depression and parental self-esteem in AD girls.
This study investigated the relationship between infants' temperament and mothers' parenting stress. This investigation is done by focusing on the interaction effects between the infants' temperament and maternal factors. A total of 1,120 infants and their mothers from a national sample were selected as subjects for carrying this investigation. The EAS (Emotionality, Activity and Sociality) Temperament Survey for Children: Parental Ratings was used to measure the infants' emotionality temperament, and PSI-SF(Parenting Stress Index-Short Form), KMSS(Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale) and a survey on socio-demographic variables were used for the maternal factors. Two-way ANOVA revealed that the parenting stress was significantly different according to the infants'emotionality temperament. Most importantly, there were significant interaction effects between the infants' emotionality temperament and maternal factors(education level, employment status and marital satisfaction). The results were discussed in terms of the goodness of fit of the temperament and parenting models.
Purpose : This study was performed to measure the level of stress that is perceived by nurses and nursing students and promote the effect of clinical nursing education. Method : the questionnaire measuring the level of stress was developed by researchers and distributed to 200 nursing students and 300 nurses in three provincial city, Korea The data was collected by self-reporting from March 1 to 15 of 2002. For data analysis, SPSS/PC was used. Result : The stress score of nursing students was higher than that of nurses. But it was not significant different in statistics. The items that had a significant difference between two groups were 17 items among the 35 items. The factors that had a significant difference between two groups were 3 factors among the 4 factors. In relationship between the subjects' demographic characteristics and their stress, the only nursing unit had a relationship to their stress. Conclusion : The level of stress being perceived by nursing students and nurses was no significant different in statistics and the subjects' demographic characteristics that had a relationship to their stress was only the nursing unit.
Purpose : To investigate academic stress, coping method, and stress symptoms of high school students. Methods : Four hundreds-forty five high school students were studied from 14th July to 21th July, 2006. All subjects were in 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade of two high school in Seoul. The academic stress, coping method and stress symptoms were evaluated by questionnaire. Results : Male students showed more academic stress than female students. There was a significant difference in the academic stress according to sex. The 2nd grade students show the highest score of academic stress in the 3 factors(parents, teacher, and friend). Male students used more active coping methods to academic stress than female students. There was a significant difference in the coping methods to academic stress according to sex. There were positive correlations between the academic stress and the stress symptoms. Among the academic stress factors, parents and teacher factor influenced physiologic, psychologic, and behavioral symptom of stress symptoms. The friend factor influenced psychologic and behavioral symptom of stress symptoms. Conclusion : According to the study results, we must provide high school students more effective coping methods to academic stress at school environment.
Abdi's numerical method(ref.13) for representing a stress singularity by shifting the mid-side nodes of isoparametric elements is reviewed. A simple technique to obtain the optimal position of the mid-side nodes in quadratic isoparametric finite element is presented. From this technique we can directly obtain the position of the side-nodes adjacent to the crack tip. It is also observed that the present technique provides good accuracy for the expression of the opening displacement and the determination of the mid-side nodes for more wide range of material properties than that obtained by Abdicant the finite element method is applied to determine stress intensity factors for pressurized crack perpendicular to and terminating at the interface of two bonded dissimilar materials. A proper definition for stress intensity factors of a crack perpendicular to bimaterial interface is provided. It is based upon a near-tip displacement solutions on the crack surface for interface crack between two dissimilar materials. Numerical testing is carried out with the eight-node and six-node elements. The results obtained are compared with the previous solutions.
The reliable stress intensity factor analysis is required for fracture mechanics design or safety evaluation of mechanical joints at which cracks often initiate and grow. It has been reported that cracks in mechanical joints usually nucleate as corner cracks at the faying surface of joints and grow as elliptical arc through cracks. In this paper, three dimensional finite element analyses are performed for elliptical arc through cracks in mechanical joints. Thereafter stress intensity factors along elliptical crack front including two surface points are determined by the virtual crack closure technique. Virtual crack closure technique is a method to calculate stress intensity factor using the finite element analysis and can be applied to non-orthogonal mesh. As a result, the effects of clearance on the stress intensity factor are investigated and crack shape are then predicted.
This paper focused to classify the consumption stress coping types among married women consumers and to investigate the differences of socio-economic variables, social class, perceived health status, and consumption stress among coping types. Data were collected from 500 married women through online surveys in South Korea. Two factors of consumption stress(consumption stress before purchase, consumption stress after purchase), and three factors of consumption stress coping(Social support coping, problem solving focused coping, Passive avoidance coping) were identified. K-mean cluster analysis classified into 4 coping types with consumption stress coping. 15% of the sample were included to the passive coping type, and 25% were classified into the ambivalent coping type. 26.8% of the sample were identified to the active coping type, and 35.2% were maladaptive coping type. There were significant differences among the consumption stress coping types on education, family income, social class, health status, consumption stress after purchase. Consumer education programs should develop and implement especially for passive coping type and maladaptive coping type to cope effectively with consumption stress.
