The purposes of this study were to develop the computer program for the contrast and geometric correction in digital subtration radiography with the IDL (Interactive Data Language) and compare the results with this program for the correction of the non-standardized radiographs to those of standardized radiographs and those with "Emago" software, the commercial program for the correction. The procedures were written for the contrast correction and subtraction with the geometric correction, using IDL. 32 pairs of periapical radiographs of premolar and molar portion of two dry human mandibles were taken at two different occasions with XCP film holder(nonstandardized films) and another 32 pairs with customized XCP film holder(standardized films). Subtraction of standardized film pairs was performed. Subtraction after the contrast and geometric correction of non-standardized films was performed using the newly developed program and Emago software. Standard deviations of grey levels of the subtracted images by the newly developed program were compared with those of the standardized group and Emago-corrected group. Standard deviations of grey levels of new program-corrected group were much smaller than those of the Emago-corrected group (p<0.001) and slightly larger than those of standardized group (p<0.05). However, the difference was very minute. This study indicates that the newly developed program written with IDL may substitute the mechanical standardization for digital subtraction radiography.
On rare occasions, percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) may be associated with adverse spinal and extraspinal events. Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) has not been reported complication following a PV. This is a report of two elderly women with spine compressions who developed idiopathic SAH after injecting polymethylmethacrylate into the thoracolumbar region transcutaneously. PV was performed as an usual manner on prone position under local anesthesia for these patients. During the interventions, two patients complained of a bursting nature of headache and their arterial blood pressure was jumped up. Computed tomography scans revealed symmetric SAH on the both hemispheres and moderate degree of hydrocephalus. Any intracranial vascular abnormalities for their SAH were not evident on modern neuroangiography modalities. One patient received a ventricular shunt surgery, but both fully recovered from the procedure-related SAH. The pathophysiologic mechanism that induce SAH will be discussed, with suggesting the manner that prevent and minimize this rare intracranial complication after PV.
In such special or precious occasions as a wedding ceremony, brides, handicapped or not, wish to wear a beautiful wedding dress. However, an ordinary wedding dress is not suitable nor convenient to a bride who has a bodily impediment. A one-piece type wedding dress, which even a normal bride needs assistants to help her wear, will create more inconvenience to crippled females. In this connection, this study is purposed to convert a normal ready-made wedding dress design into one suitable to the bodily handicapped females. For handicapped people on a wheelchair who generally put on and off a wedding dress while sitting on the chair, a one-piece type wedding dress is divided into the top and the skirt to make it a two-piece type wedding dress which is easy to get into and take off. The top should be separated from the skirt in such a manner that the wearer may not be aware of the division of the two pieces but easily put on and off since the sides or back of the top is opened. An opening is also given to the sides of the skirt so that handicapped people may sit on the skirt on the chair and then close the opening by themselves. Converting ready-made wedding dress design into functional clothes for handicapped people is really significant in that ready-made clothes can be recycled, their production cost reduced, and the economic burden of handicapped people relieved.
This study examined two students' problem solving approaches: the similarities and the differences in their problem solving approaches, and the general problem solving strategies (heuristics) the students employed were discussed. The two students represent differences not only in terms of grades earned, but also in terms of participation, motivation, attention to detail, and approaches to answering questions and problem solving. Three separate problems were selected for this study: A stoichiometry problem; a fruit salad problem; and a limiting reactant problem. Each student was asked individually on three separate occasions to contribute to this study. There are more similarities in the students' problem solving strategies than there are differences. Both students were able to correctly solve the stoichiometry and the fruit salad problems, and were unable to correctly solve the limiting reactant problem. They recognized that an algorithm could be used for both chemistry problems(a stoichiometry problem & a limiting reactant problem). Both students were unable to correctly solve the limiting reactant problem and to demonstrate a clear understanding of the Law of Conservation of Mass. Nor did they show an ability to apply it in solving the problem. However, there was a difference in each one's ability to extend what had been learned/practiced/quizzed in class, to a related but different problem situation.
Computerized densitometry was developed or the quantitative measurement of diffuse retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) atrophy and intra- and inter-operator reliability and clinical validity of this system were evaluated. Vertical diameter, center of the optic disc, and peripapillary circles which had radii of 1.5 and 2.5 times that of the optic disc were user-interactively determined in digitized RNFL photograph and density profile along each circle was measured and normalized. The areas under the normalized density profiles of the superior and the inferior segments in both circle were used or the study of RNFL. To determine the variability and correspondence in the measurements of density variations, 21 RNFL photographs of glaucoma patients which showed varying degrees of atrophy underwent computerized densitometry by two operators on two separate occasions. Coefficient of variation in the densitometric measurements was $1.2{\sim}5.4%$. Intra- and inter-operator reliabilities were excellent. The correlations between the densitometric values and mean deviations of Humphrey C30-2 visual field showed statistical significance. Computerized densitometry of RNFL photographs was useful in the objective and quantitative assessment of diffuse RNFL atrophy.
Pressure pain thresholds are routinely used in orofacial pain research to evaluate the response of deep orofacial tissues to mechanical stimulation. Like other psychophysical measurements, however, this technique must stimulate cutaneous tissues before stimulating deeper tissues. This study aimed at evaluating the influence of the cutaneous hypoesthesia on the pressure pain threshold in 30 healthy volunteers. PPTs were determined with electric pressure algometry over masseter, temporalis anterior, sternocleidomastoid, and trapezius muscle before and after skin hypoesthesia. A local anesthetic cream and a control cream were applied following a placebo-controlled double-blind design and PPTs were reassessed. Two examiners measured PPTs two times on each muscles, randomly. And the EMG activity of all muscles were measured to evaluate the relationship with PPTs. The collected data were processed by SAS/STAT program. The obtained results were as follows : 1. There were a tendency to increase PPTs after than before cutaneous hypoesthesia, but, there were no significant difference statistically. 2. PPTs were consistently higher in anterior temporalis than in masseter muscle. 3. In all occasions, PPTs were higher in males than in females(p<0.001). 4. A statistically significant correlation was obtained from values of intra-examiners and inter-examiners in all measured muscles. 5. A significantly positive correlation was not found between PPT and functional EMG activity.
Benign biliary strictures are uncommon in children. Classically, these cases are managed surgically, however less invasive approaches with interventional radiology and or endoscopy may have similar results and improved safety profiles While benign biliary strictures have been described in literature on several occasions in young children, (most older than 1 year and once in an infant 3 months of age), all reported cases were managed surgically. We present two cases of benign biliary strictures in infants less than 6 months of age that were managed successfully with novel non-invasive procedures and a review of all current pediatric cases reported in the literature. Furthermore, we describe the use of a Rendezvous procedure, which has not been reported as a treatment approach for benign biliary strictures.
Eight hundred thousand asteroids in the solar system have been identified so far under extensive sky surveys. Kilometer to sub-km sized asteroids, however, are still waiting for discovery, and their size and orbital distribution will provide a better understanding of the collisional and dynamical evolution of the solar system. In order to study the number of asteroids which is detectable with 1.6 m telescope and their orbital distribution, we conducted a small observation campaign as a part of Deep Ecliptic Patrol of the Southern Sky (DEEP-South) project, which is an asteroid survey in the southern hemisphere with Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet). We observed the ecliptic plane near opposition ($2^{\circ}{\times}2^{\circ}$ field of view centering on ${\alpha}=22h40m31s$, ${\delta}=-08^{\circ}22^{\prime}58^{{\prime}{\prime}}$) in August 2018, and identified 464 moving objects by visual inspection. As a result, 266 of 464 moving objects turn out to be previously unknown asteroids, and their signal to noise ratio is below two on numerous occasions. Most of the newly detected objects are main belt asteroids (MBAs), while three Hildas, one Jupiter trojan, and two Hungarias are also identified. In this meeting, we report the differences in the orbital distributions between the previously known asteroids and newly discovered ones using statistical methods. We also talk about the observational bias of this survey and suggest future works.
Objectives: This study was a methodological study to verify the reliability and validity and to make a diagnosis of a diagnostic tool for climacteric and postmenopausal syndrome pattern identification (CaPSPI). Methods: This study was conducted from June 1, 2018 to October 18, 2018 with ${{\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}}$ University Korean Medicine Hospital IRB's approval (2018-3). To make a diagnosis using CaPSPI, we decided the cut-points for the tool. Three professors of ${{\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}}$Korean Medical University conducted pattern identification diagnosis. The result is marked from 0 to 3, 0 is 'No', 1 is 'Slightly Yes', 2 is 'Yes' and 3 is 'Very Yes'. And if two or more professors' diagnoses are the same, we took the diagnoses as a diagnostic criteria. The decision of pattern by three experts converted to 0-1 scores in two ways. In "method 1", if the diagnosis was zero points, the score was 0 (have no such identification), and the rest was 1 (have such identification). In "method 2", if the diagnosis was zero or 1 point, the score was 0, and the rest was 1. After that, intraclass correlation was calculated for experts agreement. And logistic regression was conducted. A response variable was the results of the experts' diagnosis and an explanatory variable was the results of the pattern identification diagnostic tool. Results: The diagnosis of the three experts showed excellent concordance of more than 0.794 and showed a significant correlation with the diagnostic tool. Both 'Method 1' and 'Method 2' showed statistically significant effects with the diagnosis of 3 experts and the results of the diagnostic tool. The frequency of cumulative pattern identification diagnosis in 'Method 1' and 'Method 2' were found to be 578 occasions and 203 occasions, respectively. The average number of pattern held by participants in 'Method 1' and 'Method 2' were found to be 5.26 and 1.85, respectively. In both "Method 1" and "Method 2," the yield frequency of liver qi depression was the highest, and the frequency of kidney yin deficiency and liver-kidney yin deficiency was relatively high. Conclusions: Based on the above results, it is thought that, in diagnosis using CaPSPI of menopausal women, 'method 1' could be used for the health diagnosis and prevention, 'method 2' could be used for the pattern diagnosis. On the conclusion, CaPSPI is thought to be available for pattern diagnosis of menopause women.
