Four new records of family Diphyidae (Hydrozoa: Siphonophorae) in Korean waters

  • Siphonophores are unique, gelatinous zooplankton, which many individuals gather and live like one "Superorganism". The role of individuals in the colony differs greatly depending on their morphological difference, making them more unique. In this study, we report four species belonging to Diphyidae Quoy and Gaimard, 1827 sampled from the South Sea and off Jeju Island, Korea. Two Chelophyes Totton, 1932 (C. appendiculata (Eschscholtz, 1829); C. contorta (Lens and van Riemsdijk, 1908)) and two Eudoxoides Huxley, 1859 (E. mitra (Huxley, 1859); E. spiralis (Bigelow, 1911)) species are described with multi-focus stacked digital images. Our findings update the confirmed order Siphonophorae Eschscholtz, 1829 in Korea to be three suborders, five families, eight genera, and 13 species. In addition, we summarize the synonyms and global distributions of these four newly recorded species in Korean waters.

  • This study deals with the Korean cumaceans collected from the coast of the Yellow Sea and other Korean waters. Three species in two families (Lampropidae and Bodotriidae) are identified as new records for Korean fauna: Hemilamprops californicus Zimmer, 1936, Bodotria parva Calman, 1907 and Iphinoe sagamiensis Gamo, 1958. They are redescribed and figured in detail. The two genera, Hemilamprops and Iphinoe, are reported for the first time from Korea.

New Record of Kellicottia bostoniensis and Redescription of Two Freshwater Rotifers from Korea (Rotifera: Monogononta)

  • In this study, we identified three monogonont rotifers from South Korea: Kellicottia bostoniensis (Rousselet, 1908), Trichocerca tenuior (Gosse, 1886), and Lepadella triptera (Ehrenberg, 1830). The distribution records of K. bostoniensis were mainly located in the Nearctic, Neotropic and Western Palearctic regions. After Japan, this is the second record of it in Asia. Trichocerca tenuior and Lepadella triptera have already been recorded in Korea, but the data of two species were insufficient in previous study. Here, we describe the morphological characteristics of the three species and the trophi structures of K. bostoniensis and T. tenuior. This study is the first to characterize the trophi structure of K. bostoniensis, observed using a scanning electron microscope. In addition, we have determined the partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and 18S rRNA gene sequences of T. tenuior and L. triptera for their DNA barcodes.

Two New Records of Scopula (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) from Korea

  • Two species of Scopula, S. asthena Inoue, 1943 and S. tenuisocius Inoue, 1942, were newly recorded from Korea. Scopula asthena can be distinguished by the bipectinate male antennae and whitish wings with four blackish dots on each wing. This species is similar to S. superior (Butler, 1878) but differs in the large blackish discal dots on both wings. Scopula tenuisocius can be distinguished by its whitish forewing with light grayish, dentate antemedial line, short-line shaped discal dot and line light grayish, weakly rounded, dentate postmedial line, and whitish hindwing with a blackish discal dot and light grayish, undulating medial lines. Scopula tenuisocius is similar to S. floslactata (Haworth, 1809) but the species can be distinguished by the thinner and blackish subterminal line of the forewing that appears minutely dentate along the line. To date, 41 species of the genus Scopula are known in Korea.

Three new records of wolf spiders(Araneae: Lycosidae) from Korea

  • Three wolf spiders of the family Lycosidae Sundevall, 1833 are newly described from Korea: Arctosa labiata Tso & Chen, 2004, Pardosa altitudis Tikader & Malhotra, 1980, and Pardosa laevitarsis Tanaka & Suwa, 1986. These spiders were collected during a seasonal survey of the spider fauna of National Parks located in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsanbuk-do in 2018-2019; two males of A. labiata from Mt. Songnisan National Park, one female of P. altitudis from Mt. Chiaksan National Park, and two males of P. laevitarsis from Mt. Odaesan and Sobaeksan National Parks. The three newly recorded spiders have previously been known to be distributed in Taiwan, India, China, and Japan. These spiders were collected by hand in mixed forest leaf litter in mountainous terrains. The present paper taxonomically describes these three wolf spiders with measurements and morphological illustrations.

Clonostachys divergens and Chrysosporium merdarium: Two New Records from Soil in Korea

  • During an investigation of micro-fungi in soil, two fungal isolates belonging to the phylum Ascomycota, namely KNUF-20-NI011 and KNUF-20-NI006, were collected from Gyeongbuk Province and Dokdo Island in Korea and identified as Clonostachys divergens and Chrysosporium merdarium, respectively. The fungal isolates were confirmed through molecular phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer regions, 28S rDNA large subunit, and β-tubulin sequences. Cultural and morphological characteristics were observed and determined using different media. These species were identified based on phylogenetic relationships along with their cultural and morphological characteristics. To our knowledge, this is the first report on Clonostachys divergens and Chrysosporium merdarium in Korea.

  • Two pelagic thaliacean tunicates, Pyrosoma atlanticum and Cyclosalpa quadriluminis, with bioluminescent organ, were collected from Jejudo Island and Korea Strait. In this study, the Pyrosomatida, which is holoplanktonic colonial tunicate with ascidiozooids embedded in a common test, and to which P. atlanticum belongs, is reported for the first time in Korea. The Cyclosalpa in the Salpida has a bar-shaped alimentary canal beside the branchial bar in both oozooids and blastozooids. Cyclosalpa quadriluminis is added to make Cyclosalpa species in Korea from four to five (C. affinis, C. bakeri, C. polae, C. sewelli, and C. quadriluminis). As a result of this study, 27 species of thaliaceans have been reported from Korea.

Two New Records of Eudistoma (Aplousobranchia: Polycitoridae) from Korea

  • Two colonial ascidians, Eudistoma glaucum and Eudistoma purpureum, are reported for the first time in Korean waters through taxonomic study on ascidians collected from a subtidal zone of Jejudo Island. Eudistoma glaucum is distinguished by opaque green color of colony in living, massive colony with large corona, smooth surface of corona, sparse sand only at the peduncle, zooids in circle, about 8-10 stigmata of 3 stigmata rows and test process. Eudistoma purpureum is distinguished by brilliant, opaque, purple color of colony in living, less lobed colony form, smooth shiny surface, sparse sand only at the basal test, absence of symbionts, zooids in circle, no distinct bulging sphincter in siphon, long atrial siphon and about 20 stigmata of 3 stigmata rows. As a result of this study, four species of the genus Eudistoma are now recorded in Korean fauna.

Efficient Similarity Joins by Adaptive Prefix Filtering (맞춤 접두 필터링을 이용한 효율적인 유사도 조인)

  • As an important operation with many applications such as data cleaning and duplicate detection, the similarity join is a challenging issue, which finds all pairs of records whose similarities are above a given threshold in a dataset. We propose a new algorithm that uses the prefix filtering principle as strong constraints on generation of candidate pairs for fast similarity joins. The candidate pair is generated only when the current prefix token of a probing record shares one prefix token of an indexing record within the constrained prefix tokens by the principle. This generation method needs not to compute an upper bound of the overlap between two records, which results in reduction of execution time. Experimental results show that our algorithm significantly outperforms the previous prefix filtering-based algorithms on real datasets.
