  • The effect of temperature on natural frequency and damping is investigated in two different composite materials, Kevlar 29 fiber woven and polyethylene cloth, used especially to design ballistic armor. A damping monitoring method is used experimentally to measure the frequency response curve and it is also modeled numerically using a finite element program. The natural frequencies of a material, or a system, are a function of its elastic properties, dimensions and mass. This concept is used to calculate theoretical vibration modes of the composites. The damping properties in terms of the damping factor are determined by the half-power bandwidth technique. Numerically analyzed and experimentally measured time response curves are compared. It is seen that polymer matrix composites have temperature dependent mechanical properties. This relationship is functional and they have different effects against temperature.

  • Elements used in steel structures may be considered as an assembly of number of thin flat walls. Local buckling of these members can limit the buckling capacity of axial load resistance or flexural strength. We can avoid a premature failure, caused by effects of local buckling, by limiting the value of the wall slenderness which depend on its critical buckling stress. According to Eurocode 3, the buckling stress is calculated for an internal wall assuming that the latter is a simply supported plate on its contour. This assumption considers, without further requirement, that the two orthogonal walls to this wall are sufficiently rigid to constitute fixed supports to it. In this paper, we focus on webs of steel profiles that are internal walls delimited by flanges profiles. The objective is to determine, for a given web, flanges dimensions from which the latter can be considered as simple support for this web.

  • This study investigated experimentally the response of thick reinforced concrete specimens having hollow cores with critical parameters. The investigation includes testing of twelve specimens that are solid and hollow-core slab models. Each specimen consists of two pieces, the piece dimensions are (1.2 m) length, (0.3 m) width and (20 cm) thickness tested under both monotonic and repeated loading. The test program is carried out to study the effects of load type, core diameters, core shape, number of cores, and steel fiber existence. Load versus deflection at mid span, failure modes, and crack patterns were obtained during the test. The test results showed that core shape and core number has remarkable influenced on cracking pattern, ultimate load, and failure mode. Also, when considering repeated loading protocol, the ultimate load capacity, load at yielding, and ductility is reduced.

  • Three dimensional turbulent flow in the scroll volute of centrifugal compressor has been numerically investigated in this paper by solving the Navier-Stokes equations and $\kappa-\varepsilon$ equation model. The computational grid for the flow field of the scroll volute has been constructed based on the multi-block grid concept, which is good to avoid the central grid singularity as well as to promote grid stretching toward the volute wall. Numerical result has been obtained for both the two- and three- dimensions. For the latter flow, result of the scroll volute flow is compared with that of the straight conical volute. This comparison has sorted out the characteristic features of the three-dimensional scroll-type volute flow of centrifugal compressor.

  • Through the fatigue test of plastic gears using polyacetal polymer, this research aims at providing basic data for not only specifying operation conditions of plastic gears, but also designing dimensions of plastic gears with giving fatigue life and the estimated equation of fatigue life of plastic gears. That is, from the fatigue life curves, the estimated equation of fatigue life of plastic gears is taken out. For the estimated equation of fatigue life of plastic gears, this research provides two test methods; one is preserving non-limited temperature of tooth flank, the other is preserving limited temperature of tooth flank. As results, how the temperature of tooth flank affects the fatigue life is shown. In addition, based on the endurance limit, the essential factors of the unit load and K-factor are determined, which are needed in the design of gear by bending strength and surface durability.

  • In order to discriminate the morphologically analogous smallscale blackfish, Girella leonina and largescale blackfish, G. punctata, various methods were used by using biometric and geometric approaches. Morphometric analysis showed considerable 19 differences of total 44 morphometric dimensions: classical dimension 1 part; truss dimension 12 parts; and head part dimension 6 parts (P < 0.05). Some differences of morphological features primarily involved in caudal part of truss dimension. Our results of this study confirmed that two species adequately can distinguish with external body shape, and we hope that the results of our study could be used to identify in Girellidae family as taxonomical parameters.

  • The problem of transient laminar natural convection in compressible fluid in a rectangular enclosure is considered. The upper and lower boundaries of the enclosure are thermally insulating and the side boundaries are maintained at fixed temperatures. The fluid is considered to be a perfect gas with constant viscosity and thermal conductivity and the formulation differs from the boussinesq simplification in that the effects of variable density are completely retained. The motions are restricted to two dimensions. For incompressible fluid, the natural convection is driven mainly by buoyancy force. But the solutions show that for compressible fluid, the natural convection is driven by pressure and buoyancy forces and the thermally induced motion is acoustic in nature.

  • A binary-coupled dipole approximation (BCDA) is described for designing metal nanoparticles with nonperiodic structures in one, two, and three dimensions. This method can be used to simulate the variation of near- and far-field properties through the interactions of metal nanoparticles. An advantage of this method is in its combination with the binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO) algorithm to find the best array of nanoparticles from all possible arrays. The BPSO algorithm has been used to design an array of plasmonic nanospheres to achieve maximum absorption, scattering, and extinction coefficient spectra. In BPSO, a swarm consists of a matrix with binary entries controlling the presence ('1') or the absence ('0') of nanospheres in the array. This approach is useful in optical applications such as solar cells, biosensors, and plasmonic nanoantennae, and optical cloaking.

  • The structure of 1-butyl-3-sulfanyl urea, ($C_{11}H_{17}N_{3}O_{3}S$) carbutamide has been determined from 575 significant independent reflections collected on an automated four-circle diffractometer. The crystals are orthorhomic, space group, $P2_{1}2_{1}2_{1}$, Z=4, with unit cell dimensions a=9.257 (2), b=9.928 (2), c=15.287 (3)${\AA}$. The structure was solved by the direct methods and refined by least-squares procedure to a final R value of 0.062. Features of the structure include layers of molecules joined by N-H....O hydrogen bond distances ranging from 2.745 to 3.100${\AA}$ involved in a bifurcated hydrogen bond across two fold screw along a and b axes. The atoms forming the urea system are essentially planar.

  • This paper proposes a method for the global optimization of redundancy over the whole task period for a kinematically redundant robot. The necessary conditions based on the calculus of variations for an integral type cost criterion result in a second-order differential equation. For a cyclic task, the periodic boundary conditions due to conservativity requirements are discussed. We refine the two-point boundary value problem to an initial value adjustment problem and suggest a numerical search method for providing the conservative global optimal solution using the gradient projection method. Since the initial joint velocity is parameterized with the number of the redundancy, we only search the parameter value in the space of as many dimensions as the number of degrees of redundancy. We show through numerical examples that multiple nonhomotopic extremal solutions and the generality of the proposed method by considering the dynamics of a robot.
