  • This paper describes development procedure of the four types of fuel cell's blowers: pressurized fuel blower, selective oxidation air blower, cathode air blower, and burner air blower. Diaphragm blowers having two heads are selected to maintain force balance when the rotating arms are moving by the driving motor. Dimensions of a diaphragm cavity is designed according to the optimal design procedure using numerical simulation and experimental measurement. Experimental apparatus is designed by considering the bower characteristics having low flow rate and high pressure. Test blower is operated by a diaphragm, which has suction and discharge port on the top of the blower. For analyzing the internal flow of the blower, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis is introduced in the present study. Throughout the optimal design of the blowers, blower performance is enhanced by reducing the unbalance motion of the rotating arm and loss region in the diaphragm cavity.

  • Rubber mounts so called grommets and pipes are two major paths of vibration transmission from a compressor, an important vibration source in an air conditioner, to the whole unit. A procedure of configuring the suction and discharge pipes of the compressor was developed in this paper so as to reduce the vibration transmission through the pipes as well as the grommets. Through investigating the effects of shapes and connecting disrections of pipe elements on vibration transmission, a guideline to configure the pipe layout, which enables to reduce vibration transmission, was proposed. The initial pipe layout by the guideline was optimized with the objective function, minimization of boty vibration transmission and the cost, and with the constraints to yield the final dimensions of the pipes. The procedure not only minimizes the transmitted force to the circumferential devices but enables to eliminate rubber blocks or dampers, which are generally used to avoid resonances of the pipe system.

  • A rectangular fin with a fluid in the inside wall is analyzed and optimized using a two-dimensional analytical method. The influence of the fluid convection characteristic number in the inside wall and the fin base thickness on the fin base temperature is listed. For the fixed fin volumes, the maximum heat loss and the corresponding optimum fin effectiveness and dimensions as a function of the fin base thickness, convection characteristic numbers ratio, convection characteristic number over the fin, fluid convection characteristic number in the inside wall, and the fin volume are represented. One of the results shows that both the optimum heat loss and the corresponding fin effectiveness increase as the fin base thickness decreases.

  • In order to study the shape and dimensions of heart, the procedures to reconstruct a three dimensional left ventricular geometry from two dimensional echocardiographic images is studied including the coordinate transformation, curve fitting and interpolation utilizing three dimensional position registration arm. Nonlinear material property of the left ventricular myocardium was obtained by finite element method performed on the reconstructed geometry and optimization techniques which compare the computer predicted 3D deformation with the experimentally determined deformation. Afterwards using the obtained nonlinear material propertry the stress distribution related with oxyzen consumption rate was analyzed.

  • Form-ratio means the ratio of height/Width/Depth in 3-dimensions. The golden ratio or golden section is included as one of the form-ratio. We conducted two kinds of kansei experiments of cubic model and refrigerator varied from 1:1:1 to 1:1:3.66 on the scale of x:y:z. The subjects evaluate the form-ratios of 3-dimensional cubes and virtual products with SD-scale Kansei words(feelings and images). We applied the factor analysis to identify semantic space in cube model and virtual products. Finally, we compared with kansei structure of cube model and virtual product.

  • This paper discusses two algorithms for recommending notebook computer (NBC) and workstation adjustments so that the user can assume an ergonomic seated posture during NBC operation. Required input data are the user's anthropometric data and physical dimensions of the NBC and the workstation. The first algorithm is based on an assumption that there are no workstation constraints while the second algorithm considers the actual seat height and work surface height. The results from the algorithms include recommendations for adjusting the NBC (tilt angle of the NBC base unit, angle between the base and screen units, and base support height) and the workstation (heights of seat support and footrest, and distance between the body and the NBC).

  • Calcination, which represents thermal decomposition of $CaCO_3$, is the key reaction in a cement process. Some reactions including heating-up also take place simultaneously in the calcination reactors. Basic thermal performance and dimensions of the reactors in two cases, which are a rotary kiln wih a four-stage cyclone pre-heater and a simple single rotary kiln, were compared. To employ the heat transfer, mass transfer and reaction rate as well as calcination, one-dimensional modeling was conducted in each case. Some simplification about the reactors was described, however, the reliable Nusselt number and heat transfer coefficients on the reactors were used to make results reliable.

  • This work gives an application of stochastic techniques for the optimization of stiffened plates in vibration. The search strategy consists of substituting, for finite element calculations in the optimization process, an approximate response from a Rayleigh-Ritz method. More precisely, the paper describes the use of a Rayleigh-Ritz method in creating function approximations for use in computationally intensive design optimization based on genetic algorithms. Two applications are presented; their deal with the optimization of stiffeners on plates by varying their positions, in order to maximize some natural frequencies, while having well defined dimensions. In other words, this work gives the fundamental idea of using a Ritz approximation to the response of a plate in vibration instead of finite element analysis.

  • A stepped septum polarizer has been designed and fabricated for the 43 GHz band KVN receiver system. The dual-circular polarizer converts left and right hand circularly polarized signals into linear polarizations in two separated rectangular waveguides. Measurements show that the performance of the designed septum polarizer covering 42-48 GHz frequency band is adequate to meet the requirement of KVN receivers. Especially, a polarizer for the KVN receiver of 85-95 GHz frequency band can be fabricated by scaling the dimensions of the septum polarizer developed in this paper.

  • SPI (Software Process Improvement) activities have been considered one of the crucial approaches to achieve high quality, productivity and timely delivery of software products and services. The basic premise of SPI model is that higher maturity levels lead to better performance. In this research, the relationships between SPI results and performance were empirically investigated with Korean software companies. CMM key process areas were categorized into two dimensions, "Process Implementation" and "Quantitative Management". The relationship between process implementation and performance was significant, but the relationship between quantitative management and performance was insignificant. The control variable, size of OU(Organizational Unit), did not have significant impact on the relationships between SPI activities and OU performance.
