  • In order to study the shape and dimensions of heart, a procedure to reconstruct a three dimensional left ventricular geometry from two dimensional echocardiographic images was studied including the coordinate transformation, curve fitting and interpolation utilizing three dimensional position registration arm. Nonlinear material property of the left ventricular myocardium was obtained by finite element method performed on the reconstructed geometry and by optimization techniques which compared the computer predicted 3D deformation with the experimentally determined deformation. Elastic modulus ranged from 3.5g/$cm^2$ at early diastole to l53g/$cm^2$ at around end diastole showing slightly nonlinear relationship between the modulus and the pressure. Afterwards using the obtained nonlinear material propertry the stress distribution related with oxyzen consumption rate was analyzed. The maximum and minimum of ${\sigma}_1$ (max. principal stress) occurred at nodes on the second level intersection points of x-axis with endocardium and with epicardium, respectively. And the tendency of the interventricular septum to be flattened was observed from the compressive ${\sigma}_1$ on the anterior, posterior nodes of left ventricle and from the most significant change of dimension in $D_{RL}$ (septal-lateral dimension of right ventricle).

  • We present the first BVRI CCD photometric observations of V345 Cas made on 22 nights during the observing seasons in 2007-2008. Our light curves, resembling those of EB-type binary stars, are analyzed with the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney binary code. The photometric study shows that V345 Cas is a typical semi-detached binary system with the primary star being about ${\Delta}T$ = 2400 K hotter, two times more massive, but only 17% larger than the secondary star being filled with it's Roche-lobe. The orbit has a relatively large inclination of about $88^{\circ}$. A cool spot on the secondary component is modeled to explain a small light curve asymmetry. Absolute dimensions and related radiometric parameters of the eclipsing pair are calculated and their evolutionary states are discussed with the HR diagrams of mass-radius and temperature-luminosity. A period analysis of all available times of minima, including our measurements, indicates that the orbital period may vary in a cyclical way, unfortunately the secondary period for the variation can not be uniquely determined because of lack of present timing data.

  • Section forces of greenhouse structures were studied to suggest basic information for the structural design of greenhouses with respect to roof types and support conditions. Structural analyses were performed for pitched and arched roof, and fixed and hinged support under snow loads and wind loads. Followings are the results obtained and are expected to be useful in determining the span length and roof type in greenhouse design. 1. Special considerations might he required for roof design at the heavy snow region, and for the support design at the strong wind region, respectively. 2. Single-span structure was found to be stronger than multi-span structure under the snow load, but the former was found to be weaker than the latter under the wind load. 3. Arched roof structure was expected to be safer than pitched roof structure if the dimensions and loads were equal. 4. Greenhouse orientation and roof slope should be considered in optimum structural design of grrenhouses, because these two factors are closely related with the influence of wind load and snow load.

  • This study has successfully demonstrated the direct fabrication of polymer resistors using ink-jet printing technology as an alternative patterning to traditional photolithography. The polymer resistors were fabricated just by two layer processes using a ink-jet printer (DMP-2800, Fujifilm Dimatix). First, resistive materials was patterned by a ink-jet printing with the desired width and length. Next, resistor fabrication was completed by printing metal contact pads on the both sides of the polymer resistor. We used poly (3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS) for the resistor material and a nano-sized silver colloid for the metal contact pads. We characterized the electrical properties of PEDOT:PSS by measuring sheet resistance and specific resistance on a glass substrate. From analysis of the measured resistances, the electrical resistances of the polymer resistors linearly increased as a function of printed width and length of resistors. The accuracy of the fabricated polymer resistor showed about $0.6{\sim}2.5%$ error for the same dimensions.

  • This paper presents the soil ionization phenomena and the parameters with the transient characteristics of model grounding system under lightning impulse voltages. lonization properties of dry and wet sands were investigated by using two test cells of concentric cylindrical electrode system with different dimensions. As a result non-linear electrical behavior of sand under high impulse voltage is caused by ionization process. The transient impedance of sand depends not only on the water content but also on the magnitude of applied impulse voltages. The grounding impedance is decreased with increasing the water content and the magnitude of a lied voltages. The results resented in this paper will provide useful information on the design of high performance grounding systems against lightning surge.

  • It will be a real good news for the people who were lost their hometown by the construction of a large dam to be restored to the former state. Focused on Cheung-Pyung around where most part were flooded by the Chungju large Dam founded in early 1980s, we used Remote Sensing Technique in this study in order to restore topographical features before the flood with 3 dimensional effects. We gathered comparatively good satellite photos and remotely sensed digital images, then we made a new color image from these and the topographical map which had been made before the flood. This task was putting together two kinds of different timed images. And then, we generated DEM including the outskirts of that area as harmonizing current contour lines with the map. That could be a perfect 3D image of Cheung-Pyung around before when it had been flood by making perspective images from all directions, north, south, east and west, for showing there in three dimensions. Also, flying simulation we made for close visiting can bring us to experience their real space at that time.

  • Top-to-bottom compression strength of corrugated fiberboard boxes is partly dependent on the load-carrying ability of the central panel areas. The ability of these central areas to resist bending under load will increase the stacking strength of the box. The difference of box compression strengths, among boxes which are made with identical dimensions and fabricated with same components but different flute sizes, is primarily due to difference of the flexural stiffness of the box panels. Top-to-bottom compression strength of a box is accurately predicted by flexural stiffness measurements and the edge crush test of the combined boards. This study was carried out to analyze the flexural stiffness, maximum bending force and maximum deflection for various corrugated fiberboards by experimental investigation. There were significant differences between the machine direction (MD) and the cross-machine direction (CD) of corrugated fiberboards tested. It was about 50% in SW and DW, and $62%{\sim}74%$ in dual-medium corrugated fiberboards(e.g. DM, DMA and DMB), respectively. There were no significant differences of maximum deflection in machine direction among the tested fiberboards but, in cross direction, DM showed the highest value and followed by SW, DMA, DMB and DW in order. For the corrugated fiberboards tested, flexural stiffness in machine direction is about $29%{\sim}48%$ larger than cross direction, and difference of flexural stiffness between the two direction is the lowest in DMA and DMB.

  • We described a simple and efficient fabrication method for generating microfluidic channels with a circular-cross sectional geometry by exploiting the reflow phenomenon of a thick positive photoresist. Initial rectangular shaped positive photoresist micropatterns on a silicon wafer, which were fabricated by a conventional photolithography process, were converted into a half-circular shape by tuning the temperature to around $105^{\circ}C$. Through optimization of the reflow conditions, we could obtain a perfect circular micropattern of the positive photoresist, and control the diameter in a range from 100 to 400 ${\mu}m$. The resultant convex half-circular photoresist was used as a template for fabricating a concave polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) through a replica molding process, and a circular PDMS microchannel was produced by bonding two half-circular PDMS layers. A variety of channel dimensions and patterns can be easily prepared, including straight, S-curve, X-, Y-, and T-shapes to mimic an in vivo vascular network. To inform an endothelial cell layer, we cultured primary human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) inside circular PDMS microchannels, and demonstrated successful cell adhesion, proliferation, and alignment along the channel.

  • For investigating rubber pad sheet metal forming process, the rubber pad deformation characteristics as well as the contact problem of rubber pad-sheet metal has been analyzed. In this paper, the behavior of the rubber deformation is represented by hyper-elastic constitutive relations based on a generalized Mooney-Rivlin model. Finite element procedures for the two-dimensional responses, employing total Lagrangian formulations are implemented in an implicit form. The volumetric incompressibility condition of the rubber deformation is included in the formulation by using penalty method. The sheet metal is characterized by elasto-plastic material with strain hardening effect and analyzed by a commercial code. The contact procedure and interface program between rubber pad and sheet metal are implemented. Inflation experiment of circular rubber pad identifies the behaviour of the rubber pad deformation during the process. The various form dies and scaled down apparatus of the rubber-pad forming process are fabricated for simulating realistic forming process. The obtaining experimental data and FEM solutions were compared. The numerical solutions illustrate fair agreement with experimental results. The forming pressure distribution according to the dimensions of sheet metal and rubber pads, various rubber models and rubber material are also compared and discussed.

  • This paper deals with an automated computer-aided process planning and die design system by which designer can determine operation sequences even if they have a little experience in process planning and die design for axisymmetric products. An attempt is made to link programs incorporating a number of expert design rules with the process variables obtained by commercial FEM softwares, DEFORM and ANSYS, to form a useful package. The system is composed of four main modules. The process planning and the die design modules consider several factors, such as the complexities of preform geometry, punch and die profiles, specifications of available multi former, and the availability of standard parts. They can provide a flexible process based on either the reduction in the number of forming sequences by combining the possible two processes in sequence, or the reduction of deviation of the distribution on the level of the required forming loads by controlling the forming ratios. Especially in die design module an optimal design technique and horizontal split die were investigated for determining appropriate dimensions of components of multi-former die set. It is constructed that the proposed method can be beneficial for improving the tool life of die set at practice.
