  • We studied the nematic liquid crystal (NLC) alignment capability by the Ultraviolet (UV) alignment method on a-C:H thin-films, and investigated electro-optical performances of the UV aligned twisted nematic (TN)-liquid crystal display (LCD) with the UV exposure on a-C:H thin film surface. A good LC alignment by UV irradiation on a-C:H thin-film surfaces was achieved. Monodomain alignment of the UV aligned TN-LCD can be observed. The good electro-optical (EO) characteristics of the UV aligned TN-LCD was observed with oblique UV exposure on the a-C:H thin film surface for 1min.

  • Objectives: To determine the incidence of crack formation and propagation in apical root dentin after retreatment procedures performed using ProTaper Universal Retreatment (PTR), Mtwo-R, ProTaper Next (PTN), and Twisted File Adaptive (TFA) systems. Materials and Methods: The study consisted of 120 extracted mandibular premolars. One millimeter from the apex of each tooth was ground perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth, and the apical surface was polished. Twenty teeth served as the negative control group. One hundred teeth were prepared, obturated, and then divided into 5 retreatment groups. The retreatment procedures were performed using the following files: PTR, Mtwo-R, PTN, TFA, and hand files. After filling material removal, apical enlargement was done using apical size 0.50 mm ProTaper Universal (PTU), Mtwo, PTN, TFA, and hand files. Digital images of the apical root surfaces were recorded before preparation, after preparation, after obturation, after filling removal, and after apical enlargement using a stereomicroscope. The images were then inspected for the presence of new apical cracks and crack propagation. Data were analyzed with ${\chi}^2$ tests using SPSS 21.0 software. Results: New cracks and crack propagation occurred in all the experimental groups during the retreatment process. Nickel-titanium rotary file systems caused significantly more apical crack formation and propagation than the hand files. The PTU system caused significantly more apical cracks than the other groups after the apical enlargement stage. Conclusions: This study showed that retreatment procedures and apical enlargement after the use of retreatment files can cause crack formation and propagation in apical dentin.

  • An impeller is a type of high-speed rotor that is used to compress or transfer fluid under high-speed and pressure at high temperatures. The impeller is composed of an axial hub and several blades attached along the hub. The weight and shape of an impeller must be balanced, because their imbalances can cause noise and vibration, which can lead to the breakage of the impeller blades during operation. Thus, the hub and blades of an impeller are commonly machined in a 5-axis NC machine to obtain qualified surfaces. The impeller machining strategy or process plan can not be easily obtained due to the complex, overlapped and twisted shapes of impeller blades. Skillful machining process planners may generate appropriate machining strategies based on their experiences and floor data. However, in practice most shop floor data for the impeller machining is not well-structured such that it does not effectively provide a process planner with information for machining strategies and/or process plans. This paper reports the development of a case-based machining strategy support system (CBMS) that employs case-based reasoning to obtain the machining strategy of an impeller by using the existing machining strategies of the shop floor. The CBMS generates impeller machining strategies through a stepwise reasoning process considering the similarity features between the blade shapes and machining regions. A case study is provided to demonstrate that CBMS can generate useful machining strategies facilitating process planners. The developed system can simulate the tool paths of impeller machining and runs on the web.

  • In an attempt to optimize the in vitro-regeneration conditions necessary for the genetic manipulation of tomato species, we examined 'Ailsa Graig' cultivar of Lycopersicon for regeneration ability. The basal medium used for callus formation and shoot regeneration was MS (MS + vitamin) supplemented with six combinations of zeatin 2 mg/l, zeatin 2 mg/l + IAA 0.1 mg/l, zeatin 2 mg/l + IAA 0.5 mg/l, zeatin 4 mg/l, zeatin 4 mg/l + IAA 0.1 mg/l and zeatin 4 mg/l + IAA 0.5 mg/l. When all conditions tested were considered, however, only zeatin 2 mg/l was shown to be the best in shoot regeneration. The morphological characterization from in vitro-cultured callus of Lycopersicon esculentum L. var. 'Ailsa Craig' was investigated with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The surfaces of in vitro-cultured callus had well-defined epidermal cell in condition of zeatin 2 mg/l, but those of different treatments were twisted. These results suggested that shape of callus was involved in efficiency of shoot regeneration in tomato 'Ailsa Craig'.

  • In the present study, we synthesized CBDA-FDA and its analogue, poly(4,4' -(9,9-fluorenyl)diphenylene pyromellitimide) (PMDA-FDA), and then investigated quantitatively the orientational distributions of the polymer chain segments in the surfaces of their films by using linearly polarized Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and optical retardation analysis. We also examined the films' surface topographies using high spatial resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM). Further, rubbed films were used to assemble antiparallel and $90^{\circ}-twisted$ nematic (TN) LC cells, and the alignment behaviors, pretilt angles and anchoring energies of the LC molecules in the cells were determined. The films were found to have very interesting surface morphologies and LC alignment behaviors, which have not previously been reported. The observed LC alignments, pretilt angles and anchoring energies are discussed by taking into account the interactions of the LC molecules with the oriented polymer chain segments and the surface morphologies.

  • In general, polyimides (PIs) are used in liquid crystal displays (LCDs) as alignment layer of liquid crystals (LCs). Up to date, the rubbing alignment technique has been widely used to align liquid crystals on the PI surface, which is suitable for mass-production of LCDs because of its simple process and high productivity. However, this method has some disadvantages. Rubbed PI surfaces include the debris left by the cloth and the generation of electrostatic charges during rubbing process. Therefore, rubbing-free techniques for LC alignment are strongly required in LCD technology. In this experiment, PI was uniformly coated on indium-tin-oxide electrode substrates to form LC alignment layers using a spin-coating method and the PI layers were subsequently imidized at 433 K for 1 h. The thickness of the PI layer was set at 50 nm. The LC alignment layer surfaces were exposed to an $Ar^+$ ion-beam under various ion-beam energies. The antiparallel cells and twisted-nematic (TN) cells for the measurement of pretile angle and electro-optical characteristics were fabricated with the cell gap of 60 and $5\;{\mu}m$, respectively. The LC cells were filled with nematic LC (NLC, MJ001929, Merck) and were assembled. The NLC alignment capability on ion-beam-treated PI was observed using photomicroscope and the pretilt angle of the NLC was measured by the crystal-rotation method at room temperature. Voltage-transmittance (V-T) and response time characteristics of the ion-beam irradiated TN cell were measured by a LCD evaluation system.

  • possessed by Dong-A University Museum is designated as Treasure No. 595, and has been known for a more exquisite, delicate and realistic expression and a colorful three-dimensional structure compared to the 'grass and insect painting' work and its value in art history. However, it has not been analyzed and studied in fabric craft despite it being an embroidered work. This study used scientific devices to examine and analyze the Screen's fabric, thread colors, and embroidery techniques to clarify its patterns and fabric craft characteristics for its value in the history of fabric craft. As a result, consists of eight sides and its subject matters and composition are similar to those of the general paintings of grass and insects. The patterns on each side of the 'grass and insect painting' include cucumber, cockscomb, day lily, balsam pear, gillyflower, watermelon, eggplant, and chrysanthemums from the first side. Among these flowers, the balsam pear is a special material not found in the existing paintings of grass and insect. The eighth side only has the chrysanthemums with no insects and reptiles, making it different from the typical forms of the paintings of grass and insect. The fabric of the Screen uses black that is not seen in other decorative embroideries to emphasize and maximize various colors of threads. The fabric used the weave structure of 5-end satin called Gong Dan [non-patterned satin]. The threads used extremely slightly twisted threads that are incidentally twisted. Some threads use one color, while other threads use two or mixed colors in combination for three-dimensional expressions. Because the threads are severely deterioration and faded, it is impossible to know the original colors, but the most frequently used colors are yellow to green and other colors remaining relatively prominently are blue, grown, and violet. The colors of day lily, gillyflower, and strawberries are currently remaining as reddish yellow, but it is anticipated that they were originally orange and red considering the existing paintings of grass and insects. The embroidery technique was mostly surface satin stitch to fill the surfaces. This shows the traditional women's wisdom to reduce the waste of color threads. Satin stitch is a relatively simple embroidery technique for decorating a surface, but it uses various color threads and divides the surfaces for combined vertical, horizontal, and diagonal stitches or for the combination of long and short stitches for various textures and the sense of volume. The bodies of insects use the combination of buttonhole stitch, outline stitch, and satin stitch for three-dimensional expressions, but the use of buttonhole stitch is particularly noticeable. In addition to that, decorative stitches were used to give volume to the leaves and surface pine needle stitches were done on the scouring rush to add more realistic texture. Decorative stitches were added on top of gillyflower, strawberries, and cucumbers for a more delicate touch. is valuable in the history of paintings and art and bears great importance in the history of Korean embroidery as it uses outstanding technique and colors of Korea to express the Shin Sa-im-dang's 'Grass and Insect Painting'.

  • Of various factors indicated for effective use of straight wire appliances, there was a great lack of studies both domestic and international about the curvatures of tooth crowns. This study was performed to investigate the labio/buccal clinical crown curvatures of Korean permanent teeth. For this study, three-dimensional laser scanning was performed on 36 dental casts with normal anatomic structures. Andrews plane and Facial axis of clinical crown (FACC) were designated as horizontal and vertical reference planes respectively. 2 or 3 lines, 1mm apart, were drawn superior, inferior, left and right of these reference planes. A three-dimensional coordinate table was made for points formed by crossing these lines, and averages of each coordinate point on the 36 dental casts were obtained. The curvature equation was made using three-dimensional coordinate points (x,y,z) and by this curvature equation, the curve ratio of each tooth was obtained. Curve ratio changes of each section of teeth were calculated by curve ratios of simplified curves. These two dimensional curves were simplified horizontally and vertically Conclusions for this study are as follows. 1. The basic data of labial and buccal clinical crown curvatures were obtained about Korean permanent teeth. 2. No significant difference was found between male and females. 3. Individual tooth characteristics 1) In maxillary central incisors, the difference in the curve ratio between the gingival and incisal sides was greater than for the other teeth. And the gingival side showed a greater curve ratio. 2) Maxillary canines showed more curvatures in the mesio-occlusal surface than the other surfaces. 3) In maxillary $1^{st}$ premolars, more curvatures were found in mesio-occlusal and disto-gingival surface, thus showing a twisted crown surface, but in maxillary $2^{nd}$ premolars, the crown curvatures of mesial and distal ends became parallel to each other. 4) No significant difference in crown curvatures was found between mandibular central and lateral incisors. 5) Occluso-gingival curvatures of mandibular$2^{nd}$ premolar turned out to be more rounded than mandibular $1^{st}$ premolars or maxillary $2^{nd}$ premolars. From the above conclusions, it can be deduced that the same bracket bases can be used for mandibular central and lateral incisors. But for maxillary $1^{st}\;and\;2^{nd}$ premolars and for mandibular $1^{st}\;and\;2^{nd}$ premolars, because crown curvatures showed significant differences, when making bracket bases there is ample reason to make bracket base curves differently for each type of tooth.
