  • Effects of different heat treatments on microstructure and damping capacity of Cu-55%Mn alloy were investigated to find an optimum heat treatment condition for a maximum damping capacity. The alloy showed the high level of damping capacity in case of the aging at 375 and $400^{\circ}C$. This is ascribed to the FCC${\rightarrow}$FCT martensitic transformation and microstructural changes from mottled to tweed band type. The damping capacity had a maximum value of 0.33 in logarithmic decrement when the alloy was aged at $375^{\circ}C$ for 14 hours followed by 20 times of thermal cycling between room temperature and $250^{\circ}C$. The refinement of tweed structure by thermal cycling is thought to be responsible for the highest damping capacity.

  • XRD results on annealing studies of Na-feldspars (Amelia albite) show rapid changes in the lattice parameters of the $1073^{\circ}C$-heated samples owing to disordering of Al and Si as well as lattice distortions upon quenching of the heated specimens. While a low albite transformed to a high albite by 7-days annealing at $1073^{\circ}C$, it remains as an early intermediate albite even by 140-days annealing at $924^{\circ}C$ due to the slower Al-Si disordering rate. From the heated samples tweed structures of $100∼200\AA$ were typically observed by TEM, which showed different ways of development between the $1073^{\circ}C$ -heated one and the $923 ^{\circ}C$ -heated one. The former locally trans-farmed to rnicrostructures similar to albite twin, while the latter transformed to domain structures containing albite twin plane in the wider area. The origin of tweed structures is suggested to be formation of incipient twins (albite twin and pericline twin) to reduce the lattice instability which is increased by disordering of Al and Si as well as quenching.

  • Tweed-Merrifield directional force technology is a very useful concept, especially for the treatment of Glass II malocclusion. It has contributed to treating a favorable counter-clockwise skeletal change and balanced face, while head gear force using high pull J-hook (HPJH) in an appropriate direction is also essential to influence such results. Clinicians have encountered some problems concerning patients' compliance; however skeletal anchorage has been used widely of late because it does not necessitate patients' compliance, yet produces absolute anchorage. In this case, a good facial balance was obtained by Tweed-Merrifield directional force technology using HPJH together with skeletal anchorage, which provided anchorage control in the maxillary posterior area, torque control in the maxillary anterior area, and mandibular response. This indicates 4hat skeletal anchorage can be used to reinforce sagittal and vortical anchorage in the maxillary posterior area during the retraction of anterior teeth. The author used HPJH for torque control, Intrusion, and the bodily movement of maxillary anterior teeth during on masse movement. However, it is thought that such a result nay also be achieved by substituting mini- or microscrews for HPJH. Consequently, Tweed-Merrifield directional force technology using skeletal anchorage for the treatment of Class II malocclusion not only maximiaes the result of treatment but can also minimize patients' compliance.

  • The purpose of this exploratory research is to study Cashin's fashion philosophy and to draw her design characteristics through analysis of her work. As a result of this research, 76 garment pieces were selected from the 180 Bonnie Cashin collections at the University of Cincinnati to document and evaluate. The final selection includes: sixteen jackets, fifteen skirts, five pants, five tops, seven dresses, twenty five coats, and three capes. Bonnie Cashin specialized in practical and functional; yet innovative designs such as leather trimmed tweed Jackets/coats, canvas raincoats, suede leather coats, and ponchos. Her trademark elements include toggle closures, oversized pockets, her Noh coats, tweed suits, canvas raincoats, fringed suede dresses, funnel neck pullovers, jersey dresses, and ponchos. She emphasized function and comfort and she believed that a good design must also be practical. The examination of these 76 pieces from the University of Cincinnati's private Bonnie Cashin Collection brings to light Bonnie Cashin's creative design and what she represented in the development of American fashion design in the $20^{th}$ century.

  • This research was designed to compare clothing fabric images between on- and off-line by fabric types and its characteristics. 125 subjects who have a fashion design major evaluated the fabric image of various 16 kinds of specimens on- and off-line. Frequency, x2-test, t-test, and Pearson correlation were used for statistical analysis by SPSS WIN 11.0. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The advantage of on-line shopping includes low price and purchasing convenience, etc. On-line shoppers mostly purchase clothing items, such as T-shirt and slacks. In most cases, texture of fabrics provides a main cause for the shoppers' discontentment with internet shopping. 2. The results of t-test for the difference of the evaluation score show that plain or pile weave and highly thick or thin fabrics-for example, Organdy, Corduroy, Nylon Taffeta, Plush, etc.-have a large difference between on-and off-line image. On the other hand, medium-thick twill weave-for example, Tweed, Flannel, etc.-or patterned weave-Chiffon, Dobby fabric, etc.-shows a small difference. 3. The results of correlation of the evaluation score indicate that wool twill fabrics like Tweed, Saxony, and Polafleece show a high correlation between two kinds of evaluation score. In texture preference, no correlation exists between on-line and off-line. 4. With an analysis on fabric image evaluation by fabric characteristics, smooth, shiny pink Satin was found the most positively-evaluated item in all evaluation fields except in pattern preference and individuality. On the other hand, thick olive green Corduroy was evaluated most negatively in the fields of elegance, luxury, and feminine. 5. When compared with real ones, thin fabrics provide a different on-line fabric image. For example, Nylon Taffeta and Organdy were evaluated positively on-line because of luster and pastel tone color. However, lusterless uneven cotton Seersucker was evaluated negatively. 6. Real fabrics preference is more negative than on-line ones. In addition, patterned or unique fabrics display a high agreement between the two kinds of images.
