Zone conditional formulations for the Reynolds average reaction progress variable are used to derive an asymptotic expression for turbulent burning velocity. New DNS runs are performed for validation in a statistically one dimensional steady state configuration. Parametric study is performed with respect to turbulent intensity, integral length scale, density ratio and laminar flame speed. Results show good agreement between DNS results and the asymptotic expression in terms of measured maximum flame surface density and estimated turbulent diffusivity in unburned gas.

The lift-off characteristics of lifted laminar propane jet flames highly diluted with nitrogen are investigated introducing acoustic forcing with a fuel tube resonance frequency. A flame stability curve is obtained according to forcing strength and the nozzle exit velocity for N2 diluted flames. Flame lift-off behavior is globally classified into three regimes; 1) a weakly varying partially premixed behavior caused by a collapsible mixing for large forcing strength, 2) a coexistent behavior of the edge flame and a weakly varying partially premixed behavior for moderate forcing strength, and 3) edge flame or triple flame behavior for small forcing. It is shown that the laminar lifted flame with forcing affects flame lift-off behavior considerably, and is also clarified that the flame characteristic of flame base is well described with the penetration depth of the degree of mixing, ${\gamma}$$\_$$\delta$/. It is also confirmed that the weakly varying partially premixed flame caused by a collapsible mixing fur large forcing strength behaves as that just near flame blow-out in turbulent lift-off flame.
An analytical expression for the turbulent burning velocity is derived from the asymptotic zone conditional transport equation at the leading edge. It is given as a sum of laminar and turbulent contributions, the latter of which is given as a product of turbulent diffusivity in unburned gas and inverse scale of wrinkling at the leading edge. It was previously shown that the inverse scale is equal to four times the maximum flame surface density in the wrinkled flamelet regime [1]. The linear behavior between $U_T$ and u' shows deviation with the inverse scale decreasing due to the effect of a finite flamelet thickness at higher turbulent intensities. DNS results show that $U_T/S^0_{Lu}$ may be given as a function of two dimensionless parameters, $u'/S^0_{Lu}$ and $l_t/\delta_F$, which may be transformed into another relationship in terms of $u'/S^0_{Lu}$, and Ka. A larger $l_t/{\delta}_F$ or a smaller Ka leads to a smaller scale of wrinkling, hence a larger turbulent burning velocity in the limited range of $u'/S^0_{Lu}$. Good agreement is achieved between the analytical expression and the turbulent burning velocities from DNS in both wrinkled and thickened-wrinkled flame regimes.

The soot yield has been studied by a premixed propane-oxygen-inert gas combustion in a specially designed disk-type constant-volume combustion chamber to investigate the effects of pressure, temperature and turbulence on soot formation. Premixtures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of chamber at 45 degree intervals in order to observe the soot formation under high pressures. The eight flames converged compress the end gases to a high pressure. The laser schlieren and direct flame photographs for observation field with 10 mm in diameter are taken to examine into the behaviors of flame front and gas flow in laminar and turbulent combustion. The soot volume fraction in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by the in situ laser extinction technique and simultaneously the corresponding burnt gas temperature by the two-color pyrometry method. The pressure and temperature during soot formation are changed by varying the initial charge pressure and the volume fraction of inert gas compositions, respectively. It is found that the soot yield increases with dropping temperature and rising pressure at constant equivalence ratio, and that the soot yield of turbulent combustion decreases in comparison with that of laminar combustion because the burnt gas temperature increases with the drop of heat loss.
Unsteady numerical study has been conducted on combustion dynamics of a lean-premixed swirl-stabilized gas turbine swirl injector. A three-dimensional computation method utilizing the message passing interface (MPI) parallel architecture, large eddy simulation(LES), and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) technique was applied. The unsteady turbulent flame dynamics are simulated so that the turbulent flame structure can be characterized in detail. It was observed that some fuel lumps escape from the primary combustion zone, and move downstream and consequently produce hot spots. Those flame dynamics coincides with experimental data. In addition, basis modes of the unsteady turbulent flame are characterized using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis. The flame structure based on odd basis modes is apparently larger than that of even ones. The flame structure can be extracted from the summation of the basis modes and eigenvectors at any moment.
A characterization of turbulent reacting flows has proved difficult owing to the complex interaction between turbulence, mixing, and combustion chemistry. There are many types of time scales in turbulent flame which can determine flame structure. This counter jet type premixed burner produces high intensity turbulence. The goal is to gain better insights into the flame structures at high turbulence. 6 propane/air flames gave been studied with high velocity fluctuation in bundle type nozzle and in one hole type nozzle. By measuring velocity fluctuation, turbulent intensity and integral length scale are obtained. And sets of OH LIF images were processed to see flame structure of the mean flame curvatures and flame lengths for comparison with turbulence intensity and turbulent length scales. The results show that the decrease in nozzle size generates smaller flow eddy and mean curvatures of the flame fronts, and a decrease in Damkohler number estimated from flow time scale measurement.
Many previous works have been performed to provide correlations of flame length, theoretically and experimentally. Most of these results studied were conducted in vertical turbulent flame with no coaxial air condition. The present study analyzes the flame length scaling with coaxial air. In turbulent hydrogen non-premixed jet flames with coaxial air, flame length scaling theoretically proposed so far has been related with the concept of a far-field equivalent source. At high coaxial air to fuel velocity ratio, $U_A/U_F$, however, this scaling theory has some difference with experimental flame length data. This difference is understood to be due to the fact that the theory is based on far-field notion, while the effect of coaxial air on jet flame occurs in the region near the nozzle exit. Therefore, we define effective jet density $P_{eff}$ involving the concept of near-field so that effective jet diameter can be extended to the near-field region. In this condition, we modify the correlation and compare with experimental data.
In order to realistically represent the complex turbulence-chemistry interaction at the partially premixed turbulent lifted flames encountered in the gas turbine combustors, the combined conserved-scalar/level-set flamelet approach has been adopted. The parallel unstructured-grid finite-volume method has been developed to maintain the geometric flexibility and computational efficiency for the solution of the physically and geometrically complex flows. Special emphasis is given to the swirl effects on the combustion characteristics of the lean-premixed gas turbine combustor. Numerical results suggest that the present approach is capable of realistically simulating the combustion characteristics for the lean-premixed gas turbine engines and the lifted turbulent jet flame with a vitiated coflow.
Adding small amounts of air to the fuel is used in many commercial combustors to avoid sooty flame. But partially premixed jet flame has lower blowout velocity, $u_{b.o}$, than nonpremixed one. Increasing blowout limit would be one of the key factors to develope highly intense compact combustion devices. Swirling flow enhances fuel and air mixing and induces a highly turbulent recirculation zone, which helps flame stabilization. It was known that NOx emission decreases with swirl on the proper range of swirl number. And it was shown that the flame interaction in multiple jets also increases $u_{b.o}$ owing to the internal recirculation and reduces NO emission. If the effects of swirl and flame interaction are combined together in partially premixed flame, both $u_{b.o}$ increasement and NOx emission reduction could be achieved. Blowout limits of partially premixed interacting propane flame in the swirling air coflow are investigated experimentally. The results show that the flame is not extinguished up to the experimental limits, 210 m/s, at the swirl number of 0.32 and $X_{F,o}$ = 0.46.
For the better understanding of the stability of turbulent combustion, more researches on extinction and re-ignition are needed. Flame interactions in non-premixed flame have also not been greatly researched. We made a hybrid twin jet flame, the combinations of diffusion flame and partially-premixed diffusion flame, in a twin jet counterflow configuration. The extinction limits of a crossed twin jet counterflow have been extended in comparison with those of a one-dimensional counterflow because of flame interactions through heat transfer and joint ownership of various radicals. Besides, we have obtain ignition $Damk\"{o}hler$ number by experimental method without external ignition source using the extinction characteristic in a crossed twin jet counterflow flame. From results, we can identify the hysteresis between extinction and ignition $Damk\"{o}hler$ number in S-curve.
