This study investigates the effects of sediment on the flow characteristics such as velocity distribution, friction velocity, turbulent intensities, Reynolds stress, etc. Particle tracking velocimetry (PTY) is used to measure the vertical flow field. Results show that flow over the high bed-load concentration region has larger values of mean velocity and friction velocity and smaller values of turbulence intensities, compared to those for flow over the low bed-load concentration region.

The flow characteristics on the centerline in case of free jet, sudden expansion jet and impinging jet have been investigated. Centerline flow behaviors and similaritis with mean velocities, turbulent intensities, shear stresses, isotropic structures and turbulent kinetic energies on the streamwise direction were looked into and compared with three jets, The results show that mean velocities have represented potential core and decayed with similar gradients. The turbulent intensities and shear stresses were presented peak values in the self-preserving region, and then they were in decay. Aeolotropy in the initial region were possible returned to isotropy patterns with asymptotic approach in the downstream region. It has been found that the turbulent kinetic energies for the three cases of jet existed in the similarity and they coincided with Gaussian profile.
This paper presents three-dimensional mean velocities, turbulent intensities and Reynolds shear stresses measured in the Y-Z plane of the gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate by using an X-type hot-wire probe. This experiments is carried out at the flow rate of 450ℓ/min which is equivalent to the combustion air flow rate necessary to heat release 15,000 kcal/hr in a gas furnace. Mean velocities and turbulent intensities etc. show that their maximum values exist around the narrow slits situated radially on the edge of and in front of a burner. According to downstream regions, they have a peculiar shape like a starfish because the flows going out of the narrow slits and the swirl vanes of an inclined baffle plate diffuse and develop into inward and outward of a burner. The rotational flow due to the inclined flow velocity going out of swirl vanes of a cone type baffle plate seems to decrease the magnitudes of mean velocities V and W respectively by about 30% smaller than those of mean velocity U. The turbulent intensities have large values of 50%∼210% within the range of 0.5

Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of the surface roughness on the flat plate turbulent boundary layer. The square rods were installed at the leading edge to make surface roughness. The particle image velocimetry was used to measure the mean velocities and velocity fluctuation component. All measurements were made over a range of w/k=1. 2 5 and $Re_x=80.000{\sim}360,000$. Friction velocity was measured by using Clauser plot method. The level of turbulent intensities on roughness surface appears more strongly than that of turbulent intensities on flat plate. A correlation of boundary layer thickness in term of $Re_x$ and w/k are presented.

The effect of thermal stratification on the stratified flow past a circular cylinder was examined in a wind tunnel. Turbulent intensities, the rms values of temperature and turbulent convective heat flux as well as the velocity and temperature profiles in the cylinder wake with a strong thermal gradient of $200^{\circ}C/m$ were measured by using a hot-wire and cold-wire combination probe. It is found that the temperature field affects as an active contaminant, so that the vertical growth of vortical structure is suppressed and the strouhal number decreases with increasing the extent of stratification. And also, the wake structure can not sustain their symmetricity about the wake centerline and vertical turbulent motion dissipates faster than that of the neutral case when such a strong thermal gradient is superimposed. It is evident that the turbulent mixing in the upper half section is stronger than that of the lower of the wake in a stably stratified flow because the turbulent intensities and convective heat flux in the upper half section are larger than those of the lower half of the wake.

The turbulent structures of the free plane jet and two dimensional impinging jet are investigated experimentally. In order to get the two dimensional jet, the contour of the cubic equation suggested by Morel is used for a contracting nozzle. A linearized constant-temperature hot-wire anemometer is used for measurement. Mean velocities and turbulent intensities are measured along the centerline of the jet. Jet halp width spatial double velocity correlation coefficients and integral length scales are obtained. It is established that the free plane jet is truly self-preserving about 40 slot widths downstream of the nozzle. The experiments for the impinging jet are carried out at four different impingement wall locations within the self-preserving region of the free plane jet, and comparing the results with that of free plane jet, the mean velocity is changed in the region of 0.25H and turbulent intensities are affected in the region of 0.2H from the wall, respectively, where H means the distance between the nozzle exit and the wall.
This paper presents vector fields, three dimensional mean velocities, turbulent intensities, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stresses measured in the X-Y plane of the gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate by using an X-type hot-wire probe. This experiment is carried out at the flow rates of 350 and 450ℓ/min which are equivalent to the combustion air flow rate necessary to release 15,000 kcal/hr in a gas furnace. The results show that the maximum axial mean velocity component exists around the narrow slits situated radially on the edge of a burner. Therefore, there is some entrainment of ambient air in the outer region of a burner. The maximum values of turbulent intensities occur around the narrow slits and in front of a burner up to X/R=1.5. Moreover, the turbulent intensity components show a relatively large value in the inner region due to the flow diffusion and mixing processes between the inclined baffle plate and the swirl vane. Consequently, the combustion reaction is expected to occur actively near these regions.

A theoretical method is described to simulate the propagation of turbulent premixed flames in a closed vessel. The objective is to develop and test an efficient technique to predict the propagation speed of flame as well as the geometric structure of the flame surfaces. Flame is advected by the statistically generated turbulent flow field and propagates as a wave by solving twodimensional Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In the simulation of the unburned gas flow field, following turbulence properties were satisfied: mean velocity field, turbulence intensities, spatial and temporal correlations of velocity fluctuations. It is assumed that these properties are not affected by the expansion of the burned gas region. Predictions were compared with existing experimental data for flames propagating in a closed vessel charged with hydrogen/air mixture with various turbulence intensities and Reynolds numbers. Comparisons were made in flame radius growth rate, rms flame radius fluctuations, and average perimeter and fractal dimensions of the flame boundaries. Two dimensional time dependent simulation resulted in correct trends of the measured flame data. The reasonable behavior and high efficiency proves the usefulness of this method in difficult problems of flame propagation such as in internal combustion engines.
Experiments were conducted to show the characteristics of the flow on unventilated parallel plane jets. Measurements of mean velocity components and turbulent intensities were carried out with a particle image velocimetry. The measurements range of these experiments was Reynolds number of 5300 based on the nozzle width and the cases of nozzle-to-nozzle distance were 4, 6, 8, and 10 times the width of the nozzle. Results show that a recirculation zone with a sub-atmospheric static pressure was bounded by the inner shear layers of the individual jets and the nozzles plate. The positions, where maximum value of mean turbulent intensities and mean turbulent kinetic energy show, were at the same position with the merging point. The spread of jets in the merging region increases more rapidly than that of jets in the converging and the combined region. As nozzle-to-nozzle distances were increased, it was shown that merging and combined lengths were shorter.
Large eddy simulation(LES) of fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to investigate the effect of Reynolds number on the flow field at $Re_{\tau}$=180, 395, 590 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. A dynamic subgrid-scale model for the turbulent subgrid-scale stresses was employed to close the governing equations. The mean flow properties, mean velocity profiles and turbulent intensities obtained from the present LES are in good agreement with the previous numerical and experimental results currently available. The Reynolds number effects were observed in the higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor). Furthermore, the budgets of the Reynolds stresses and turbulent kinetic energy were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effect of Reynolds number on the turbulent structures.
