  • The tumble or swirl flow is used to promote mixing of air and fuel in the cylinder and to enlarge turbulent intensity in the end of the compression stroke. Since the in-cylinder flow is a kind of transient state with rapid flow variation, which is non-steady state flow, the tumble or swirl flow has not been analyzed sufficiently whether they are applicable to combustion theoretically. In the investigation of intake turbulent characteristics using PIV method, typical flow characteristics were figured out by SCV configurations. An engine installed SCV had higher vorticity and turbulent strength by fluctuation and turbulent kinetic energy than a baseline engine, especially near the cylinder wall and lower part of the cylinder. Above all, the engine with SCV 8 was superior to the others in aspect of vorticity and turbulent strength. For energy dissipation, a baseline engine had much higher energy loss than the engine installed SCV because flow impinged on the cylinder wall. Consequently, as swirl flow was added to existing tumble flow, it was found that fluctuation increased and flow energy was conserved effectively through the experiment.

  • The air velocity flowing in inner combustion chamber of SCramjet is supersonic and the time of its stay is very short as a few milliseconds. Within this short time, fuel injection, air-fuel mixing, and combustion process should be accomplished. Several methods are suggested for mixing enhancement. Among these, cavity is selected to study for mixing characteristics. The numerical simulation is performed in the case of freestream Mach number of 2.5 and cavity located in front of fuel jet injection. 3 different sized cavities of the same length-height ratio were used in order to recognize the effect about cavity size. Also, the case without cavity was analyzed to find the effect of cavity. Used code compared with the result of experiment under identical conditions and it was verified. Through this comparison and verification, mixing enhancement by cavity size could be confirmed.

  • In this study, it is investigated that the possibility of the numerical simulation for the incineration of the hazardous material, crbon tetrachloride($CCl_4$). A 3-dimensional numerical technology is applied for turbulent reacting flows of the full-scale Dow Chemical incinerator. The calculations are made by a CRAY-2S, super computer. The major parameters considered in this study are kiln revolution rate (rpm), filling ratio of the solid waste(f), burner Injection velocity and angle, and turbulent air jets for swirl. And the employed turbulent reaction model is the eddy break-up model which is a kind of fast chemistry model assuming general equilibrium and used for a premixed flame. The calculated flow fields are presented and discussed. 1) The presence of turbulent air nozzles for swirl gives rise to visible increase of the convective motion over the region of the solid waste. This implies the possibility to enhance the mixing of the waste with the surrounding all and thereby to reduce thermal and species stratification, which were reported in a large rotary kiln operation. 2) Considering that the location of the recirculation region has a strong relation with the heating rate of the solid waste, the control of the recirculation region by the burner injection angle Is quite desirable in the sense of the flexible design of the rotary kiln incinerator for a carbon tetrachloride. 3) Finally, it is found that the eddy break-up model Is not suitable for carbon tetrachloride($CCl_4$) because this model is not incorporated the flame inhibition trend due to the presence $CCl_4$compound.

  • In this paper, the recirculation flow motion and mixing characteristics driven by air bubble stream in a rectangular water tank is studied. The time-resolved PIV technique is adopted for the quantitative visualization and analysis. 488 nm Ar-ion CW laser is used for illumination and orange fluorescent ($\lambda_{ex}=540nm,\;\lambda_{em}=560nm$) particle images are acquired by a PCO 10bit high-speed CCD camera (1280$\times$1024). To obtain clean particle images, 545 nm long pass optical filter and an image intensifier are employed and the flow rates of compressed air is 3 l/min at 0.5 MPa. The recirculation and mixing flow field is further investigated by time-resolved POD analysis technique. It is observed that the large scale recirculation resulting from the interaction between rising bubble stream and side wall is the most dominant flow structure and there are small scale vortex structures moving along with large scale recirculation flow. It is also verified that the sum of 20 modes of velocity field has about 67.4% of total turbulent energy.

  • Numerical analysis for the combustion flow in the combustion chamber of incineration system has been carried out in order to acquire the basic design capability of incineration system. Established mathematical model was applied to the performance prediction of the pre-designed combustion chamber of commercial plant. Especially, combustion characteristics and the variation of flow pattern have been deeply discussed in accordance with secondary air injection. Secondary air injection was effective for the turbulent mixing between air and carbon monoxide/volatile matter resulting in considerably reduced CO content at the exit. Secondary air injection was found to be one of the key design parameters because the size of recirculation zone could be changed with the variation of injection characteristics.

  • A cycle simulation method is developed by coupling a commercial code, Ricardo's WAVE, with the SENKIN code from CHEMKIN packages to predict combustion characteristics of an HCCI engine. By solving detailed chemical kinetics the SENKIN code calculates the combustion products in the combustion chamber during the valve closing period, i.e. from IVC to EVO. Except the combustion chamber during the valve closing period the WAVE code solves thermodynamic status in the whole engine system. The cycle simulation of the complete engine system is made possible by exchanging the numerical solutions between the codes on the coupling positions of the intake port at IVC and of the exhaust port at EVO. This method is validated against the available experimental data from recent literatures. Auto ignition timing and cylinder pressure are well predicted for various engine operating conditions including a very high ECR rate although it shows a trend of sharp increase in cylinder pressure immediate after auto ignition. This trend is overpredicted especially for EGR cases, which may be due to the assumption of single-zone combustion model and the limit of the chemical kinetic model for the prediction of turbulent air-fuel mixing phenomena. A further work would be needed for the implementation of a multi-zone combustion model and the effect of turbulent mixing into the method.

  • The isothermal flow structure and mixing characteristics of a hybrid/dual swirl jet combustor for micro-gas turbine were numerically investigated. Location of pilot nozzle, angle and direction of swirl vane were varied as main parameters with constant fuel flow rates for each nozzle. As a result, the variation in location of pilot nozzle resulted in significant change in turbulent flow field near burner exit, in particular, center toroidal recirculation zone (CTRZ) as well as turbulent intensity, and thus flame stability and emission characteristics might be significantly changed. The swirl angle of $45^{\circ}$ provided similar recirculating flow patterns in a wide range of equivalence ratio (0.5~1.0). Compared to the co-swirl flow, the counter-swirl flow leaded to the reduction in CTRZ and fuel-air mixing near the burner exit and a weak interaction between the pilot partially premixed flame and the lean premixed flame. With the comparison of experimental results, it was confirmed that the case of co-swirl flow and swirl $angle=45^{\circ}$ would provided an optimized combustor performance in terms of flame stability and pollutant emissions.

  • In this study, a laser sheet technique and PLIF (Planar laser-induced fluorescence) are applied to a laboratory-scale pulverized coal burner of the open type, and the spatial relationship of the pulverized coal particle zone and the combustion reaction zone is examined by simultaneous measurement of Mie scattering and OH-LIF images. It is found that this technique can be used to investigate the spatial relationship of the combustion reaction zone and pulverized-coal particles in turbulent pulverized-coal flames without disturbing the combustion reaction field. In the upstream region, the combustion reaction occurs only in the periphery of the clusters where high-temperature burned gas of the methane pilot flame is entrained and oxygen supply is sufficient. In the downstream region, however, combustion reaction can be seen also within clusters of pulverized-coal particles, since the temperature of pulverized-coal particles rises, and the mixing with emitted volatile matter and ambient air is promoted.

  • Propellants pressurized and fed into the combustion chamber undergoes the mechanical, chemical combustion processes. Along with their distinctive physical characteristics, propellant combustion is typically divided into the processes; injection, atomization, mixing, vaporization and chemical reaction. These processes assumed to happen in a serial manner are strongly coupled, thereby involves formidable physical complexities. In this study a numerical experiment is attempted to simulate the burning sprays due to OFO, FOF triplet / FOOF split doublet injectors. Based on Eulerian-Lagrangian frame, Navier-Stokes equation system for compressible flows is preconditioned with low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model and time-integrated by LU-SGS, and the sprays are described by DSF model with the characteristics initialized by experimentally determined spray characteristics. Simplified single global reaction model approximates heptane-air reaction. It was observed that FOOF split doublet injector shows better atmization with shortest residence and the FOF triplet injector produces better combustion performance.

  • The flowfield of transverse jet in a supersonic air stream subjected to shock wave turbulent boundary layer interactions is simulated numerically by Generalized Taylor Galerkin(GTG) finite element methods. Effects of turbulence are taken into account with a two-equation (k-$\varepsilon$) model with a compressibility correction. Injection pressures and slot widths are varied in the present study. Pressure, separation extents, and penetration heights are compared with experimental data. Favorable comparisons with experimental measurements are demonstrated.
