  • A computational analysis has been conducted on the compressible flow in the turbine exhaust nozzle of the gas generator cycle liquid rocket engine. The commercial CFD code Fluent has been used. Four nozzle designs have been compared to select the turbine exhaust nozzle concept. Three candidates with single nozzle have comparable performance. The model with bifurcated nozzles shows significant performance loss. However it will be better in the view of balanced thrust distribution because of its symmetric geometry.

  • To improve the durability of the turbocharger, it is important to suppress cracking of the turbine housing; therefore, we investigated the initiation and growth of these cracks. First, we initiated a crack in the turbine housing using endurance experiments. After the endurance test, cracks mainly occurred in the valve seat, the nozzle area, and the scroll part of the turbine housing. The results of a fracture analysis of the cracks showed that cracks in the valve seat were initiated by fatigue fracture. This seems to be caused by the accumulation of mechanical and thermal stresses due to vibration of the turbine wheel and high-temperature exhaust gas. Also, cracks in nozzle and scroll area were initiated by intergranular corrosion due to the exhaust gas. Thus, although there are differences in the cause of initiation according to the site, a concentric waveform was observed in all fracture planes. This phenomenon indicates that cracks gradually grow due to repeated stress changes, and the main causes are the temperature difference of the exhaust gas and the vibration caused by the turbine shaft.

  • The turbine exhaust system consists of a turbine flange, heat exchanger, exhaust duct and thrust nozzle. Heat exchanger is used for the launch vehicle because of the advantage of reducing the weight of the helium gas and the storage tank by using the heat exchanger pressurization method compared to the cold gas pressurizing method. Since the gas generator is combusted in fuel-rich condition, the soot is contained in the combustion gas. Hence, the heat exchanger should be designed considering the reduction of the heat exchange efficiency due to the soot effect. In addition, the uncertainty of the heat exchange calculation and the evaluation of the influence of the combustion gas soot on the heat exchange can not be completely calculated, so the design requirements must include a structure that can guarantee and control the temperature of the heat exchanger outlet. In this paper, it is described that the component allocation, the design method considering the manufacture of internal structure, the advantages of new concept of nozzle design.

  • A Propulsion System of the CRW(Canard Rotor Wing) type UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) was composed of the turbojet engine to generate the propulsive exhaust gas, and the duct system including main and rotary ducts, the nozzle subsystem including main and tip jet nozzle for three flight modes such as lift/landing mode, low speed transition flight mode and high speed forward flight mode. Transient simulation performance utilized the ICV (Inter-component volume) method and simulated using the SIMULINK. Transient performance analysis was performed on 3 cases. Fuel flow schedules to accelerate from Idle to maximum rotational speed were divided into the step increase of the most severe case and ramp increase cases to avoid the overshoot of turbine inlet temperature, and variations of thrust and the turbine inlet temperature were investigated in some transient analysis cases.

  • The Aft-deck is being applied to the latest unmanned aircraft for the purpose of shielding the gas turbine exhaust plume or spreading jets to increase the mixing rate with the ambient air, thereby reducing the temperature of exhaust gases. In this study, we would like to find out how the performance of the nozzle is affected by the design variables of the Aft-deck. The design variables of aft-deck are selected as length, expansion angle and upper deck shape. The correlation between thrust and plume shielding rate with the length variable is presented. And the correlation between the thrust and the jet diffusion range is presented according to the expansion angle. In addition, the thrust increase effect is confirmed by the removal of the upper deck and the characteristics of transverse velocity vector determined mixing performance with external flow.

  • A prestudy on expendable turbine engine for high-speed vehicle was conducted. After two possible mission profiles were established to decide the engine requirements, design point analysis was performed with the values of design parameter which were obtained from similar class engines, references, etc. The results showed that specific net thrust and specific fuel consumption with turbine inlet temperature of 3,600 R are 2,599.4 ft/s and 1.483 lb/(lb*h) respectively at the flight condition of sea level, Mach 1.2. It was also found that major design parameters for determining maximum net thrust were turbine inlet temperature for low supersonic and transonic flight speed and compressor exit temperature for high supersonic flight speed from the results of performance analysis on the two possible mission profiles. In addition, simple turbojet engine with an axial compressor, a straight annular combustor, an one stage axial turbine and a fixed throat area converge-diverge exhaust nozzle was proposed as the configuration of simple low cost lightweight turbine engine.

  • For the protection of the local air quality and the global atmosphere, the emissions of trace species including nitric oxides (NO and NO$_2$) from gas turbines are regulated by local governments and by the International Civil Aviation Organization. In-situ measurements of such species are needed not only for the development of advanced low-emission combustion concepts but also for providing emissions data required for the sound assessment of the effects of the emissions on environment. We have been developing a laser absorption system that has a capability of simultaneous determination of NO and NO$_2$concentrations in the exhaust jets from aero gas turbines. A diode laser operating near 1.8 micrometer is used for the detection of NO while a separated visible tunable diode laser operating near 676 nanometers is used for NO$_2$. The sensitivities at elevated temperature conditions were determined for simulated gas mixtures heated up to 500K in a heated cell of a straight 0.5 m optical path. Sensitivity limits estimated as were 30 ppmv-m and 3.7 ppmv-m for NO and NO$_2$, respectively, at a typical exhaust gas temperature of 800K. Experiments using the simulated exhaust flows have proven that $CO_2$ and $H_2O$ vapor - both major combustion products - do not show any interference in the NO or NO$_2$ measurements. The measurement system has been applied to the NO/NO$_2$ measurements in NO and NO$_2$ doped real combustion gas jets issuing from a rectangular nozzle having 0.4 m optical path. The lower detection limits of the system were considerably decreased by using a multipass optical cell. A pair of off-axis parabola mirrors successfully suppressed the beam steering in the combustion gas jets by centralizing the fluctuating beam in sensor area of the detectors.
