A gas turbine consists of an upstream compressor and a downstream turbine with a combustion chamber, and also the compressor and the turbine are generally coupled using a single shaft. Large scale gas turbine compressor is designed as multi-stage axial flow and the blade is fan-type which is thick and wide. Recently radial cracking happens occasionally at the compressor blade tip of large scale gas turbine. So, FEM was performed on the compressor blade and vibration modes and dynamic stresses were analyzed. According to the analysis, 9th natural frequency mode of the blade, which is 2 strip mode, is near the vane passing frequency by the vane located at the upstream of the blade.

Turbine blade is subject to torsional load by torsion-mount, centrifugal load by rotation of rotor and repeated bending load by steam pressure. Turbine with partially cracked blade has normal working condition at initial repair time but vibratory working condition at middle repair time due to crack growth. Finite element analysis on turbine blade indicates that repeated bending load out of all loads is the most important factor on fatigue strength of turbine blade. Therefore, this study shows root mean square roughness has linear relation with stress intensity factor range in 12% Cr steel and can predict loading condition of fractured turbine blade.
This study simulated the operation of a steam injected gas turbine combined heat and power (CHP) system. A full off-design analysis was carried out to examine the change in the turbine blade temperature caused by steam injection. The prediction of turbine blade temperature was performed for the operating modes suggested in the previous study where the limitation of compressor surge margin reduction was analyzed in the steam injected gas turbine. It was found that both the fully injected and partially injected operations suggested in the previous study would cause the blade temperature to exceed that of the pure CHP operation and the under-firing operation would provide too low blade temperature. An optimal operation was proposed where both the turbine inlet temperature and the injection amount were modulated to keep both the reference turbine blade temperature and the minimum compressor surge margin. The modulation was intended to maintain a stable compressor operation and turbine life. It was shown that the optimal operation would provide a larger power output than the under-firing operation and a higher efficiency than the original partially injected operation.

The turbine is one of the most important components in the tidal current power device which can convert current flow to rotational energy. Generally, a tidal turbine has two or three blades that are subjected to hydrodynamic loads. The blades are continuously deformed by various incoming flow velocities. Depending on the velocities, blade size, and material, the deformation rates would be different that could affect the power production rate as well as turbine performance. Surely deformed blades would decrease the performance of the turbine. However, most studies of turbine performance have been carried out without considerations on the blade deformation. The power estimation and analysis should consider the deformed blade shape for accurate output power. This paper describes a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis conducted using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and the finite element method (FEM) to estimate practical turbine performance. The loss of turbine efficiency was calculated for a deformed blade that decreased by 2.2% with maximum deformation of 216mm at the blade tip. As a result of the study, principal causes of power loss induced by blade deformation were analysed and summarised in this paper.
An effective method to calculate aerodynamic loads and aeroelastic responses of large wind turbine tower-blade coupled structures in yaw condition is proposed. By a case study on a 5 MW large wind turbine, the finite element model of the wind turbine tower-blade coupled structure is established to obtain the modal information. The harmonic superposition method and modified blade-element momentum theory are used to calculate aerodynamic loads in yaw condition, in which the wind shear, tower shadow, tower-blade modal and aerodynamic interactions, and rotational effects are fully taken into account. The mode superposition method is used to calculate kinetic equation of wind turbine tower-blade coupled structure in time domain. The induced velocity and dynamic loads are updated through iterative loop, and the aeroelastic responses of large wind turbine tower-blade coupled system are then obtained. For completeness, the yaw effect and aeroelastic effect on aerodynamic loads and wind-induced responses are discussed in detail based on the calculating results.
For a given axial turbine blade, reverse design method is developed to improve blade efficiency, optimize blade profile, or repair parts etc. In this process, design parameters for designing axial turbine blade are induced. The induced design parameters are as follows; ellipse at leading edge, radios of trailing edge, axial chord, tangential chord, wedge angle at the inlet, and unguided turning angle. Suction and pressure surfaces of turbine blade are described by cubic polynomials. Two sample blades we chosen and their blade profiles are measured at the mean radius. Values of design parameters for sample blades are obtained by the reverse design method. Re-designed blade profiles using calculated design parameters are compared with the measured data, and they show good agreement. So, the developed design method could be applied to design general turbine blades. Various blade shapes are designed, and they show that designed blade profiles can be adjusted by controlling design parameters.

Turbine-generator torsional response is caused by interaction between electrical transient air-gap torque and mechanical characteristics of turbine-generator shafts. There are various factors that affects torsional interaction such as fault, circuit breaker switching and generator mal-synchronizing, etc. Fortunately, we can easily simulate above torsional interaction phenomena by using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP). However, conventional EMTP shows the incomplete response of super- synchronous torsional mode since it does not consider turbine blade section. Therefore, in this paper, we introduced mechanical-electrical analogy for detailed modeling of turbine-generator shaft system including low pressure turbine blade section. In addition, we derived the natural frequencies of modeled turbine-generator shaft system including turbine blade section and analyzed the characteristics of mechanical torque response at shaft coupling and turbine blade root area according to power system balanced/unbalanced faults.
In the turbine-blade manufacturing industry, turbine-blades are machined and then are assembled to form a circular roll of blades. The roll of blades should be balanced as much as possible, since otherwise the efficiency of the turbine generator might be damaged. A locking blade is a blade whose location is fixed and a non-locking blade is a blade whose location can be freely changed. In this paper, we study methods for balancing the weights of the rotating blades for a turbine where some blades are locking blades. The turbine-blade balancing problem is formulated into a mixed-integer programming problem, which turns out to be NP-hard. A heuristic method based on the number partitioning algorithm is developed and the computational experiments show very promising results.

This research describes on airfoil shape design, crucial to core technique and algorithm optimization for the wind turbine blade development. We grasped the parameter to define the airfoil shape in the wind turbine blade and aircraft, and the important performance characteristic of the airfoil. The airfoil shape function is selected by studying which is suitable for wind turbine blade airfoil development. The selected method is verified by to compare the generated airfoil shape with base airfoil. The new airfoils were created by the selecting shape function based on the well-known airfoil for wind turbine blades. In addition, we performed aerodynamic analysis about the generated airfoils by XFOIL and estimated the point of difference in the airfoil shape parameter using the aerodynamic performance results which is compared with basic airfoil. This result data applies to the fundamental research for a wind turbine blade optimization design and accomplished the aerodynamic analysis manual.

The objective of this study is to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a vertical axis wind turbine blade as the basic study of a design of a vertical axis wind turbine. The lift and drag coefficients of the various shape of the vortical axis wind turbine blades are analyzed and compared using the CFD code Fluent. To validate the numerical analysis, the predicted results of the Fluent are compared with those of the Xfoil code and the experimental results. We conclude that the program Fluent can be used to predict the aerodynamics of the wind turbine blade. By comparing the predicted results of the aerodynamic characteristics of the different shape of the blades, an appropriate shape of the blade is suggested to design the vortical axis wind turbine blade.
