  • In karst formation area, the tunnel support system is an important factor for the tunnel safety during operation. This paper presents the simplified tunnel support systems to be adopt in karst formation. For the tunnel planned in the project area, karst features and the expected scenarios in the tunnel area were developed based on the results of the geological and geotechnical assessment. In order to provide specific supporting system and construction details for a wide range of possible karst features, the generalized typical support systems are developed according to the classification of karst features. In addition, the initial support systems and construction sequence for each karst feature are also presented in this paper.

  • We must notice ground movement by excavation for reasonable tunnel designs. The convergence confinement method is an attempt to evaluate tunnel stability conditions by means of a mathematical model and a ground response curve. In this study, the convergence confinement method by numerical model was examined. This method don't need the basic assumptions for a mathematical model of circular tunnel shape, and hydrostatic in situ stress. Also modified ground response curve that is calculated after installing the support, is suggested, which informs us the ground movement mechanism. The ground response curve and the support reaction curve are mutually dependent. Especially the support reaction curve depends upon the ground response curve. The mechanism of tunnel must be analyzed by the interaction between support and ground. Consequently the stability of tunnel must be qualitatively investigated by a ground response curve and quantitatively adjudged by a numerical analysis for the reasonable design of tunnel.

  • With increasing the number of tunnel constructions, more reliable analysis methods for tunnel excavation is needed to accomplish technically sound design, and stable and economical constructions. For this purpose, a series of construction procedures, which include excavation and support stages of tunneling, need to be considered. In this study, therefore, rock-support response behavior due to railway tunnel construction has been examined by using analytic methods and numerical calculations. For examining rock-support response behavior, the effects of shotcrete, thickness and time of installation have been considered. Through analytic and numerical calculations, it is shown that support pressure becomes higher with increasing the shotcrete thickness and stiffness, and hence the tunnel deformation tends to be stable. It is also important to notice that there is a significant effect of shotcrete installation time on the tunnel deformation, although no significant change in support pressure is observed.

  • Due to the constraints in pre site-investigation for tunnel, it is essential to redesign the support structures suitable for rock mass conditions such as rock strength, ground water and discontinuity conditions for safe tunnel construction. For the selection of optimum support, it is very important to carry out the rock mass classification and in-situ measurement in tunnelling. In this paper, in a mountain tunnel designed by NATM in hard rock, the selectable system for optimum support has been studied. The tunnel is situated at Chun-an in Kyungbu highspeed railway line with 2 lanes over a length of 4, 020 m and a diameter of 15 m. The tunnel was constructed by drill & blasting method and long bench cut method, designed five types of standard support patterns according to rock mass conditions. In this tunnel, face mapping based on image processing of tunnel face and rock mass classification by RMR carried out for the quantitative evaluation of the characteristics of rock mass and compared with rock mass classes in design. Also, in-situ measurement of convergence and crown settlement conducted about 30 m interval, assessed the stability of tunnel from the analysis of monitoring data. Through the results of rock mass classification and in-situ measurement in several sections, the design of supports were modified for the safe and economic tunnelling.

  • Despite of the popularity of using empirical methods for support design, empirical rules suffer from the inherent problem of providing no indication of the safety degree of the design. For the support design of large span tunnel, it was considered that the empirical design guidelines should be augmented by more explicit design methods. This paper presents an overview of the analytical support design methodology that is used to refine initial empirical recommendations. The initial support design supplemented by analytical methods is validated by probabilistic and deterministic approach applied to stress-induced and structurally controlled gravity-driven instability problem each. As a result, the extent of the potential failure zone is sorted out and numerical parametric studies were performed to gain insight into the overall behavior of tunnel in the potential failure zone. Concequently, it was decided that additional conservation techniques have to be planed as a reserved support pattern.

  • The behavior of an opening and the performance of support system depend upon the load-deformation characteristics of ground and support as well as of the manner and of timing of support installation. The load-deformation characteristics of ground and support are derived by the interaction between ground and support. The interaction between ground and support is qualitatively illustrated by a ground response curve. • Generally the NATM technique uses shotcrete, rock bolts, H-beam steel ribs, and concrete lining for the tunnel support in Korea. Among them, H-beam steel ribs are extremely heavy and difficult for workers to handle. Therefore, especially in Europe, lattice girders are being used instead of H-beam steel ribs for tunnel support. Lattice girders have basically the same function as H-beam steel ribs in tunnelling. The main advantages of using lattice girders compared to H-beam steel rib supports are as follows: 1) lattice girders have relatively a low weight enough to be easily lifted and installed by labors and 2) they create a more effective bond with the shotcrete. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness and applicability of lattice girders compared to H-beam steel ribs used in construction tunnel sites and to show that lattice girders can be adequately applied in domestic tunnel construction sites as a new tunnel support system.

  • Geological and geotechnical surveys, in general, should precede the excavation to ensure the safety of the tunnel and should be followed up according to the various geological condition during the excavation. However actually the standard support patterns which were decided during the design step used be insisted for the whole excavation steps in spite of the various geological conditions. OO tunnel was excavated with NATM and a support pattern type-V in weak rocks. When the tunnel was excavated up to 25m long, the severe displacement was generated in the portal area and the shotcrete was damaged to make the cracks and the tunnel face was totally collapsed. It might happen owing to the one-day heavy rain, but the exact reason for that accident should be found out and the new optimal support patternt needed. Consequently three dimensional numerical analysis was applied for the evaluation of the cause of the tunnel collapse instead of two dimensional analysis, because three dimensional analysis can show better the real field phenomenon than two dimensional analysis in which the load distribution methods are adopted for the tunnel excavation. We could simulate the actual situations with three dimensional finite difference code and propose the new optimal support patterns.

  • During the tunnel construction the major failure mode can be categorized as: tunnel failure just after the tunnel excavation without support, failure after application of shotcrete and finally failure after setting the concrete lining. The failure mode just after the tunnel excavation without support, can be further classified as : bench failure, crown failure, face failure, full face failure, failure due to weak strata and failure due to overburden. Moreover the failure after application of shotcrete is classified as heading face failure, settlement of shotcrete support, local failure of shotcrete lining and invert shotcrete. To find out the major causes of tunnel collapse, the investigation was done in case of the second phase of Seoul subway construction. The investigation results depicted that the major causes of tunnel collapse were due to the weak layer of rock/fault and sudden influx of ground water from the tunnel crown. While the investigation results of the mountain road tunnels construction have shown that the major causes of tunnel failure were inadequate analysis of tunnel face mapping results, intersection of faults and limestone cavities. In this paper some recent measurement in order to mitigate such tunnel collapse are presented
