  • Recently, hybrid concrete structures such as a concrete-filled steel tubular(CFT), a steel reinforced concrete(SRC) and a composite material are popular in structure applications. They also have merit of high strength, high ductility, and large energy absorption capacity. But the analysis of hybrid concrete structures is very difficult owing to the complex behavior of concrete under passive confinement. This paper has analyzed CFT, which receives passive confinement using Tri-Surface concrete model for three dimension finite element analysis. By the result of that, the proposed model was properly forecasted a concrete behavior that receives passive restraint as well as non-linear analysis of concrete which receive uniaxial stress and high active confinement of 400Mpa. If the model through the steady study is set up especially on the factor of concrete under passive confinement, the proposed concrete model will be surely useful for analysis of the hybrid concrete structures.

  • We experimented cutting characteristics-cutting force, behavior of chip, surface roughness-under low temperature, which generated by liquid nitrogen(77K). The results obtained are as follows; 1) The workpice is became to-195 .deg. C in 5, minutes, and in cooled cutting, cutting force bycooled workpices is stronger than normal temperature condition. Chip thickness is decreasing comparative toN.C and shear angle in shear plane is in creasing. 2) Chip formation becomes long or short tubular chips in turning SXM440, SNCM21 steel, when cutting speed is low and cutting temperatre is cooled condition, but in the STS304 steel the variation of c formations isn't known to. 3) In C.C, surface roughness of workpices is better than N.C and found to make more the crat wearthan N.C 4) It is possible to detect the behavior of chip by monitoring the maximum amplitude of gai value of cutting force.

  • Fatigue test was conducted on a S45C steel using hour-glass shaped smooth tubular specimen under biaxial loading in order to investigate the crack formation and growth at room temperature. Three types of loading system, i.e fully reserved cyclic torsion without a superimposed static tension or compression, fully reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static tension and fully reserved cyclic torsion with a superimposed static compression were employed. The test results show that a superimposed static tensile mean stress reduced fatigue lifetime. however a superimposed static compressive mean stress increased fatigue lifetime. Experimental results indicated that cracks were initiated on planes of maximum shear strain with either a superimposed mean stresses or not. A biaxial mean stress had an effect on the direction which cracks nucleated and propagated at stage I (mode II).

  • This study explores the lateral deflections of diagonal braces in concentrically-braced earthquake-resisting frames. The performance of this widely-used system is often compromised by the flexural buckling of slender braces in compression. In addition to reducing the compressive resistance, buckling may also cause these members to undergo sizeable lateral deflections which could damage surrounding structural components. Different approaches have been used in the past to predict the mid-length lateral deflections of cyclically loaded steel braces based on their theoretical deformed geometry or by using experimental data. Expressions have been proposed relating the mid-length lateral deflection to the axial displacement ductility of the member. Recent experiments were conducted on hollow and concrete-filled circular hollow section (CHS) braces of different lengths under cyclic loading. Very slender, concrete-filled tubular braces exhibited a highly ductile response, undergoing large axial displacements prior to failure. The presence of concrete infill did not influence the magnitude of lateral deflection in relation to the axial displacement, but did increase the number of cycles endured and the maximum axial displacement achieved. The corresponding lateral deflections exceeded the deflections observed in the majority of the previous experiments that were considered. Consequently, predictive expressions from previous research did not accurately predict the mid-height lateral deflections of these CHS members. Mid-length lateral deflections were found to be influenced by the member non-dimensional slenderness (${\bar{\lambda}}$) and hence a new expression was proposed for the lateral deflection in terms of member slenderness and axial displacement ductility.

  • Hot forming using boron steel is currently used for manufacturing low-weight automobile body parts, and a high tensile strength of about 1,500 MPa is obtained after hot forming. However, a high fatigue life is a more important factor than high strength when it is used for automobile suspension parts. A tubular torsion beam axle (TTBA) is one of these suspension parts, and this research deals with the fatigue characteristic of TTBA using hot forming. The low cyclic fatigue life of boron steel is investigated according to the cooling method. In addition, a structural and fatigue analysis of TTBA is performed to predict the fatigue life. The stress concentration that occurs in the tubular torsion beam is found, and the longest fatigue life occurs when rapid cooling is utilized in the TTBA fabrication.

  • Stiffeners can be utilised to enhance the strength of thin-walled wind turbine towers in engineering practise, thus, structural performance of wind turbine towers by means of different stiffening schemes should be compared to explore the optimal structural enhancement method. In this paper two alternative stiffening methods, employing horizontal or vertical stiffeners, for steel tubular wind turbine towers have been studied. In particular, two groups of three wind turbine towers of 50m, 150m and 250m in height, stiffened by horizontal rings and vertical strips respectively, were analysed by using FEM software of ABAQUS. For each height level tower, the mass of the stiffening rings is equal to that of vertical stiffeners each other. The maximum von Mises stresses and horizontal sways of these towers with vertical stiffeners is compared with the corresponding ring-stiffened towers. A linear buckling analysis is conducted to study the buckling modes and critical buckling loads of the three height levels of tower. The buckling modes and eigenvalues of the 50m, 150m and 250m vertically stiffened towers were also compared with those of the horizontally stiffened towers. The numbers and central angles of the vertical stiffeners are considered as design variables to study the effect of vertical stiffeners on the structural performance of wind turbine towers. Following an extensive parametric study, these strengthening techniques were compared with each other and it is obtained that the use of vertical stiffeners is a more efficient approach to enhance the stability and strength of intermediate and high towers than the use of horizontal rings.

  • This study introduces the CFTA girder(Concrete-Filled and Tied Steel Tubular Arch Girder) which is a combined structural system of traditional CFT, arch, and prestress structures. Static load tests and structural behavior analyses were carried out for a 25m long CFTA girder. In the analysis, each load of 58kN, 88kN, 148kN, 207kN,and 298kN was applied incrementally at the positions of 1.0 m distances in both directions from the center of the girder. On each test, strain and displacement were measured. Linear static FEM analyses using Strand7 code were also performed to check the structural stability and to investigate the effects of prestressing(${\pm}$20%) and material property(Young's modulus) on the displacement and strain. The results of this study are summarized as follows: the initial strain & displacement under selfweight and prestressing were influenced with the variation of prestressing, but they were mainly effected only by Young's modulus when additional loads were applied.

  • Recently, high-performance steels have been increasingly used for structural materials in buildings and bridges with the demand for high-rise and long-span of main structures. This paper offers a series of basic study for the design specification of structural members using high performance steel, that is material properties of HSA800 (High-performance rolled steel for building structures). Built-up square tube stub columns with variables of width-to-thickness ratios are planned as a parametric study in order to investigate the local buckling behaviors and check the current design limit of width-to-thickness ratio. In addition, the buckling behaviors of stub columns obtained finite element (FE) analysis were compared with those from experimental tests. The verified FE model was used for parametric study and checked applicability of high-strength steel on current design specification.

  • The CFT columns used in thin-walled steel tubes can be more economical, because it was expected the increase of strength by restriction for the local buckling of steel tubes. The purpose of this paper is to review feasibility of existing design formula and verify the applicability limit of width-to-thickness ratio for increasing the strength of rectangular CFT columns. As the main parameters of experiments, width-to-thickness ratios of steel tube, height of rectangular concrete columns, and concrete filled or not. The strength of concrete are selected to 90MPa. From the test results, the confinement effect of steel tube on the compressive strength of infilled concrete is remarkably appeared in the thin-walled rectangular steel tube columns infilled wih high strength concrete. By the non-linear analysis, the axial strength from experiment result was given higher than analysis result for all CFT stub columns.

  • Open-cut method has been widely used to construct underground structures, but it causes several problems such as traffic congestion and public resentment resulting from severe construction noise and ground settlement. In many cases, it is very difficult to build underground structures safely due to the unknown locations of buried facilities such as water pipes, drainage pipes, gas pipes and high-pressure cable conduits etc. Also in open-cut method, moving buried facilities causes additional cost and extension of construction period. Therefore, this paper is to present a case study in which Tubular Roof construction Method (T.R.c.M.), a newly developed construction method for underground structures using slab steel pipes and PC wall trench, is applied for the construction of a subway tunnel in Seoul. As a result, it is found that T.R.c.M. is a construction method by which tunnels can be constructed safely without any effect on the surrounding environment and traffic flow due to the minimized construction vibration and noise.
