  • Plant factory can control artificially the environments for crop cultivation, so they can produce high quality agricultural products all year round. This study was carried to select suitable kohlrabi cultivar for hydroponics in a closed-type plant factory system. We used three cultivars of red kohlrabi, 'Asac kohl', 'Kolibri', and 'Purple king' as plant materials. The artificial light source was LED light, light intensity and photoperiod were $249{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ and 12/12 hours (day/night period), respectively. Hydroponic cultivation type was used circulating deep flow technique. At 43 days after transplanting, fresh weight of whole plant and tuber and leaf area were not significantly different among cultivars. Shoot dry weight and tuber dry weight were highest in 'Asac kohl' cultivar, and number of leaves was highest in 'Purple king' cultivar. Sugar content and yield were highest in 'Asac kohl' cultivar. Considering the growth and marketable yields, 'Asac kohl' was the optimal kohlrabi cultivar for hydroponic cultivation in a closed-type plant factory system.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the changes of rate of infected common scab and yield characteristics of fall potato(Solanum tuberosum L.) where green manual crops had been previously cultivated, crushed and tilled and P\ulcornerE transparent vinyl film had been mulched and tunneled to solar heating of soil from May 21. 1998 to July 28. 1998. The total yields of green manual crops which had been previousely cultivated were as followed order : pioneer 855F(64.3MT/ha), soybean(25.0MT/ha), red clover and orchardgrass. The average below-ground temperature at the depths of 5, 10 and 20cm were 54, 45 and 44$^{\circ}C$ during the mulching period, respectively The rate of infected area per potato tuber of common scab decreased by solar heating the soils with mulching after the soybean and red clover cultivation as with previous croppings. Plant height, SPAD(soil plant analysis development) reading, fresh weight of stems, and fall potato's tuber yields tended to increase by the cultivation of green manual crops and mulching of P\ulcornerE film. Fall potato's tuber yields were remarkably affected in the plot of soybean, red clover and pioneer 855F+cultivation of fall potato. T-N, K and Ca contents of fall potato(stem and tuber) also tended to increase by the cultivation of green manual crops and mulching of P\ulcornerE film. T-N, K and Ca contents of soil tended to increase after the cultivation of green manual crops and mulching of P\ulcornerE film and then reduced to contents of soil before green manual planting after potato harvesting.

  • Tuber yield and content of general component and diosgenin which is a main bioactive property were investigated in order to determine the growth characteristics of round typed yam(Dioscorea opposita L.) and the potential of artificial culture at Suwon, Korea. Tubers of round yam were initiated to form at 60 days after planting and then enlargement of tubers lasted by 160 days after planting. Compared to short typed yam(108g), tuber weight of round yam was higher(127g) on the basis of dry weight at 200 days after planting. In comparison of general component between round yam and short yam, protein of round yam$(3.62\%)$ was higher than short yam$(2.10\%)$. Water content in round yam$(64.5\%)$ was lower in short yam$(79.4\%)$, indicating a higher dry weight ratio of round yam. Hardness of round yam was 2787.6 while short yam showed about two times higher hardness(4946.9). Lightness was higher in round yam(77.4). In tuber extracts analysis, diosgenin content was respectively $3.32\%$ in round yam and $2.61\%$ in short yam.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the ecology of weed occurrence and to establish an economical paddy field weed control system for direct-seeded rice on water. The main problem weed among annual and perennial weeds was Eleocharis kuroguwai. The control effect of E. kuroguwai was low by the application of azimsulfuron + carfentrazone-ethyl + pyriminobac-methyl at the early stages of rice in directly seeded paddy fields, but most annual weeds including Echinochloa crus-galli were controlled. Also, the additional application of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl + thiobencarb GR at 20 days after first treatment or of bentazone SL at 43 days after the first treatment effectively controlled E. kuroguwai. Tuber formation of E. kuroguwai was inhibited by the additional application of pyrazosulfuron-ethyl + thiobencarb by 84%, but the dormancy rate of old tubers of E. kuroguwai under the soil was higher than that of E. kuroguwai tubers following single application of azimsulfuron + carfentrazone-ethyl + pyriminobac-methyl at the early stages of rice. Tuber formation was inhibited by the additional application of bentazone by approximately 87%, and the old tuber dormancy rate was low in the bentazone treatment. High amounts of old dormant tubers of E. kuroguwai were found in the weedy plots.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of planting density on thegrowth and yield of Rehmannia glutinosa. A local variety was planted on the 100cm row, with different planting density of 20, 30 and 40 plants per $m^2$. Nitrogen, phosporus and potassium fertilizers were applied as 12, 12, and 16 kg /10a, respectively with compost of 1,000kg /10a. Plant height became shorter with increase in the planting density from 20 to 40 $plants\;/\;m^2$. But emergence date, leaf length and width were not significantly changed with planting density. As the planting density was increased, tuber diameter got slender and tuber number was decreased, but tuber length was not affected. The tuber yield was 793kg /10a at the planting density of 20 $plants\;/\;m^2$ and it increased 40% at 30 $plants\;/\;m^2$ and 45% at 40 $plants\;/\;m^2$ Regarding on the farmer's income, optimum planting density was estimated 30 $plants\;/\;m^2$.

  • This study was carried out in 2002 to determine the usefulness of Jeju scoria for a component of a growth medium and optimum planting density of 'Dejima' seed potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) grown in a wick hydroponic system. The minitubers ($7.0{\pm}0.2\;g$) produced in an aeroponics system were planted at five planting densities (3 to 15 tubers/box; 19 to $95\;tubers/m^2$) in polystyrene boxes (51 cm long $\times$ 31 cm wide $\times$ 20 cm high) containing two media (perlite + peatmoss and Jeju scoria + peatmoss 1:2, v/v mixtures). There were no significant interactions between medium and planting density for the growth and tuber yield traits. Shoot growth and the number of tubers per plant were not significantly affected by the media. However, tuber yield was higher in the perlite + peatmoss mixture than in the Jeju scoria + peatmoss mixture. The percentage of underdeveloped plants ranged from 8.3 to 14.7% at four lower planting densities (3 to 12 tubers/ box), and was 25.8% at the highest planting density (15 tubers/box). As planting density was increased from 3 to 15 tubers per box, seed potato (${\geq}5\;g$ tuber) number increased from 101 to 269 and yield from 6.3 to $11.6\;kg/m^2$. These results indicate that the perlite + peatmoss mixture might be more suitable for seed potato production in the wick hydroponic system, and considering the percentage of underdeveloped plants and tuber yield, optimum planting density would be 56 to $76\;tubers/m^2$ in the system depending on availability of seed potatoes.

  • To develop a nutrient solution for a closed hydroponic system in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) 'Atlantic' and 'Superior' potatoes were grown with the nutrient solutions whose strengths were 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 of the concentration of the nutrient solution developed by the National Horticultural Experiment Station in Japan. The best results in potato growth and yield were obtained with 0.5 and 1.0 strength nutrient solutions, and nutrient compositions for potato were determined based on the 1.0 strength nutrient solution; $14.4me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;N,\;4.2me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;P,\;7.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;K,\;5.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Ca$, and $3.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Mg$ for stolon growth stage and $14.8me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;N,\;4.0me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;P,\;8.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;K,\;6.5me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Ca$, and $3.0me{\cdot}L^{-1}\;Mg$ for tuber growth stage. To examine the suitability of the nutrient solutions developed for potato, the strengths of 1.0 (PS 1.0S), 0.75 (PS 0.75S), or 0.5 (PS 0.5S) were compared with half-strength of Japanese Horticultural Experiment Station' solution (JH 0.5S). Changes in pH, EC, and mineral concentrations in nutrient solutions depended more on solution strength and growth stage than on the type of nutrient solution. However, most elements in solution remained constant with plant age in PS 0.75S solution during stolon growth stage, and in PS 0.5S solution during tuber growth stage. The greatest growth and tuber yield was obtained in the standard strength solution (PS 1.0S), and potato solution developed in this experiment was recommended for hydroponic culture of potato in a closed system.

  • The physicochemical properties of tuber starch in water chestnut have been studied. Peak viscosity, hot paste viscosity and cooling peak viscosity were 5679, 3146 and 4262 RVU, respectively. In three transition parameters, onset temperature ($T_o$), peak temperature ($T_p$), and conclusion temperature ($T_c$) were 64.1, 68.5 and $72.3^{\circ}C$, respectively. Gelatinization enthalpy (${\Delta}H$ gel) was 4.48 J/g. A-type starch has a smaller proportion (11.4%) of short chains ($DP{\geq}12$) and a larger proportion (57.2%) of short chains ($13{\leq}DP{\geq}24$). The tuber starch of water chestnut displayed an A-type X-ray diffraction pattern showing a strong diffraction peak at $2{\Theta}$ values of $15.18^{\circ}$, $17.13^{\circ}$, and $23.1^{\circ}$, and a weak peak at $2{\Theta}$ values of $18.1^{\circ}$, $20.06^{\circ}$, and $26.69^{\circ}$. Their crystallinity was 28.6% and the mean starch granule size was 21.5 ${\mu}m$.

  • This study is to select good diploid clones and develope them into FDR clones. Seventeen diploid clones were selected by tuber plants from the imported diploid potato seeds and from the progenies of the crosses between them. The characteristics of the selected clones were reported. Fifteen clones were crossed among them or open pollinated or bulk pollinated, and 18 selections were made from the seed progenies of these pollinations. Male and female unreduced gametes were searched by crossing 2x, 4x and by microtechnique. Only one clone, D6-21 was found to produce unreduced male gamete with the rate of 27-30% by FDR. Unreduced female gamete has not been found among these diploids.
