  • Steam generator tubes are degraded from wear, stress corrosion cracking, rupture and fatigue and so on. Therefore, the failure assessment of steam generator tube is very important for the integrity of energy plants. In the steam generator tubes, sometimes, the local wall thinning may result from severe degradations such as erosion-corrosion damage and wear due to vibration. In this paper, the elasto-plastic analysis was performed by FE code ANSYS on steam generator tubes with wall thinning. Also, the four-point bending tests were performed on the wall thinned specimens, and then it was compared with the analysis results. We evaluated the failure mode, fracture strength and fracture behavior from the experiment and FE analysis. Also, it was possible to predict the crack initiation point by estimating true fracture ductility under multi-axial stress conditions at the center of the thinned area from FE analysis.

  • Composite piles have been used in ground conditions where conventional piles are unsuitable or uneconomical. They may consist of a combination of timber and concrete pile in Europe. One method of doing this was to drive a steel tube to just below water level, and a concrete pile was lowered down it and driven to the required level where corrosion was susceptible in U.K. Recently, a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite pile was developed to use in many marine locations for piers and waterfront buildings in the USA(Hoy, 1995; Phair, 1997). A steel composite (SC) pile reinforced concrete spun pile with steel tube was also proposed and used for the foundation acting a high lateral earthquake load. Composite piles have been developed and researched to increase lateral resistance or to prevent corrosion in marine structures. In paper, the composite pile consisting of the steel upper portion and the concrete lower portion is proposed and are carried out several tests to confirm the capacity of the pile such as lateral load test, dynamic load tests and bending test. It is noted that the composite pile would be a economical pile being capable of increasing lateral resistance.

  • Plastic buckling of tubular columns has been attributed to rotational instability of plastic hinges. The present study aimed to characterize the plastic hinges for two different grades of strain-hardening, examined in mild-steel (MS) and stainless-teel (SS) tubes with un-strengthened and strengthened conditions. At the primary stage, the formerly tested experimental specimens were simulated using full-scale FE models considering nonlinear response of the materials, then to estimate the characteristics of the plastic hinges, a meso model was developed from the critical region of the tubes and the moment-rotation diagrams were depicted under pure bending conditions. By comparison of the relative rotation diagram obtained by the full-scale models with the critical rotation under pure bending, the length and critical rotation of the plastic hinges under eccentric axial load were estimated. The stress and displacement diagrams indicated the mechanism of higher energy absorption in the strengthened tubes, compared to unstrengthened specimens, due to establishment of stable wrinkles along the tubes. The meso model showed that by increasing the critical rotation in the strengthened MS tube equal to 1450%, the energy absorption of the tube has been enhanced to 2100%, prior to collapse.

  • In this paper, experimental and theoretical investigations on the response and collapse of 310 stainless steel tubes with different diameter-to-thickness ratios subjected to cyclic bending are discussed. The tube-bending device and curvature-ovalization measurement apparatus were used to conduct the experiment. The endochronic theory combined with the principle of virtual work and finite element software, ANSYS, were used to simulate the moment-curvature and ovalization-curvature relationships. It is shown that although the two methods lead to good simulation of the moment-curvature relationship, the endochronic theory combined with the principle of virtual work has the better simulation of the ovalization-curvature response when compared with experimental data and the simulation by ANSYS. In addition, the theoretical formulations proposed by Kyriakides and Shaw (1987) and Lee et al. (2001) were used to simulate the controlled curvature-number of cycles to produce buckling relationship. It is shown that the theoretical formulations effectively simulate the experimental data.

  • The aeroelastic stability analysis of composite bearingless rotors is investigated using a large deflection beam theory in hover. The bearingless rotor configuration consists of a single flexbeam with a wrap-around type torque tube and the pitch links located at the leading edge and trailing edge of the torque tube. The outboard main blade, flexbeam and torque tube are all assumed to be an elastic beam undergoing flap bending, lead-lag bending, elastic twist and axial deflections, which are discretized into beam finite elements. For the analysis of composite bearingless rotors, flexbeam is assumed to be a rectangular section made of laminate. Two-dimensional quasi-steady strip theory is used for aerodynamic computation. The finite element equations of motion for beams are obtained from Hamilton's principle. The p-k method is used to determine aeroelastic stability boundary. Numerical results are presented for selected bearingless rotor configurations based on the lay-up of laminae in the flexbeam and pitch links location. A systematic study is made to identify the importance of the stiffness coupling terms on aeroelastic stability for various fiber orientation and for different configuration.

  • To study the seismic behavior of recycled aggregate concrete filled circular steel tube (RACFCST) frames, the seismic behavior experiment of RACFCST frame was carried out to measure the hysteresis curve, skeleton curve and other seismic behavior indexes. Moreover, based on the experimental study, a feasible numerical analysis model was established to analyze the finite element parameters of 8 RACFCST frame specimens, and the influence of different variation parameters on the seismic behavior index for RACFCST frame was revealed. The results showed that the skeleton curve of specimens under different axial compression ratios were divided into three stages: elastic stage, elastic-plastic stage and descending stage, and the descending stage was relatively stable, indicating that the specimen had stronger deformation capacity in the descending stage. With the increase of axial compression ratio, the peak bearing capacity of all specimens reduced gradually, and the reduction was less than 5%. With the decrease of beam-column linear stiffness ratio, the peak bearing capacity decreased gradually. With the decrease of yield bending moment ratio of beam-column, the peak bearing capacity decreased gradually, and the decreasing rate of peak bearing capacity gradually accelerated. In addition, compared with the axial compression ratio, the beam-column linear stiffness ratio and the yield bending moment ratio of beam-column had a more significant influence on the peak bearing capacity of RACFCST frame.

  • A numerical analysis and experimental study were performed to investigate the behavior and strength of tube-gusset connection subjected to axial and lateral forces. To investigate the behavior of the connections, experiment was conducted by applying three directional loads. Local buckling and local plastic bending deformation of the connection were observed from the test. Analytical results were compared with test results for the limited cases. Primary interests here are the effect of eccentricity on the strength of the connection. To suggest a formula for the strength of tube-gusset connection, lateral forces were replaced with equivalent wall moment and eccenrtric vertical component force of lateral force. Ultimate strength formula for the each force was proposed. Finally, nondimensionalized ultimate strength interaction relationships between the wall moment of tube($M_w$), vertical axial force($P_v$), and eccentric vertical component of lateral force($P_e$) were formulated through parametric study.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the strength and behavior of the composite member in case of concrete filled steel tube embedded in concrete for application concrete filled steel tube to steel rib support in tunnel. A total of six beam specimens were prepared for steel tube in-filled with plain concrete and aerated concrete, and static bending tests were performed. As a result, the member of concrete steel tube embedded with plain concrete showed higher strength than those with aerated concrete. However, it was found that the flexural strength of member with reinforcing bar around the steel tube is more influenced by the amount of the reinforcing bar than the type of the filled concrete.

  • This study investigated to the properties of structural behaviors through a series of experiment with the key parameter, such as diameter-to-thickness(D/t) ratio, selenderness ratio of steel t~ube and strength of concrete under loading condition simple confined concrete by steel tube as a fundmental study on adaptability with structural members in high-rise building. The obtained results are sumnarised as follow. (1) The fracture mode of confined concrete was presented digonal tension fracture in the direction of $45^{\circ}$ with compression failure at the end of specimen in stub column, but the fracture mode of long column was assumed an aspect of bending fracture transversely. (2) The deformation capacity and ductility effect was increased by confine steel tube for concrete. (3) 'The emprical formula to predict the ultimate capacity of confined concrete by steel tube and concrete filled steel tube column using restraint of concrete considered D / t ratio, selenderness ratio of steel tube anti strength of' concrete were proposed.

  • The void PC slab has a structurally reasonable cross-section by forming the hollow section of the neutral axis that is unnecessary for bending behavior. Domestic PC factories have introduced automation equipment to produce hollow PC slabs, and are achieving hollow sections through inserts. However, since the excessive initial investment cost of the PC factory is the main factor in the increase in production cost, other alternatives are needed. Therefore, in this study, when producing hollow PC slab members, by using a rubber tube as a formwork to form an internal hollow space, it is intended to contribute to securing productivity through molding various hollow shapes, making it larger, lightweight, and enabling rapid production. To implement a hollow PC slab using a rubber tube mold, the shape of a hollow cross-section in which the tube is combined was implemented by considering the shape of the rubber tube first. In addition, to secure the concrete quality of the hollow part, the finish properties of the rubber tube mold and concrete were evaluated, and the hollow PC production process was established.
